User Image Most drow cities occupy large vaults/caverns in the Middledark. At these depths, faerzress is common and powerful. The drow have developed many potent spells and defenses that harness the Underdark's magical radiation for their own purposes. The Middledark also offers the defense of distance--a drow outpost near the surface is vulnerable to the attacks of adventurers and surface elves, but moving a large army into the Middledark can't be done with ease.
Taken as a whole, drow probably have the most significant presence in the Middledark. Their cities and strongholds are numerous, wealthy, and well suited for defense, and the drow themselves are cruel and strong. Only the endles feuding of the great Houses constrains drow power. Menzoberranzan is the most famous of drow cities.

Drow Magic: General

Magic is an inherent part of drow personal and societal life.
They are traditionally feared for the divine magics possessed by the priestesses of Lolth.
There is also a strong wizardly presence.

Society

Matriarchal.
Priestesses of Lolth/Lloth are in the highest seats of power.
Males considered inferior.
Some males may be respected if they are powerful wizards.
Males are never allowed to rule.
Sometimes use dark arts to turn humanoid slaves into living sculptures.
Society is based upon violence, murder, cunning, and philosophy that only the strong survive. Therefore, most drow plot endlessly to murder or otherwise incapacitate their rivals and enemy drow using deceit and betrayal.
All drow, especially those in higher positions, are wary of assassins and the like.
There are exceptions to the rule in societies where a different deity rules.
Most societies hate surface elves.

Goddess: Eiliistraee

Elemental Diety: Ghaunadaur

Titles: That Which Lurks, The Elder Eye
Home Plane: Demonweb Pits
Power level: Greater
Alignment: Chaotic evil
Symbol: A purple eye on purple, violet, and black circles.
Usually appears as a giant reddish-purple slug though it can alter its form at will.

Followers include: Oozes, slimes, jellies, outcasts, and rebels. Most of its followers are lowly drow outcasts.

Ghaunadaur is considered to be highly unpredictable by any standards.
Not always necessary to to worship it; sometimes, simply paying it lip service is enough to earn a boon of the god.
However, this is not often done as it's equally likely that it will consume or maim the penitent without warning.

Priests of the Elder Eye are required to make daily sacrifices, preferably willing sacrifices. If a priest falls behind in their sacrifices, they are required to say a prayer while coating their hand in magical oil and lighting it on fire. If the prayer is good, the priest may keep the hand. If not, the hand will be consumed by the Elder Eye.
It is generally frowned upon for priests of Ghaunadaur to be friendly with other priests; however, the Underdark is full of strange things.
