Can someone tell me the basics? Just with the "regular" verbs

What past tense? They are three different one's, the "Präteritum", which is kinda like simple past, but not used the same way.
It's mostly used for writing, in Germany you usually talk in the "Perfekt" tense which is similar to the present perfect.
There also is an tense called "Plusquamperfekt" which is used like the past perfect, I think.
I'll give you the regular conjuctions^^

Präteritum:
leben

Ich lebte
Du lebtest
Er / Sie / Es lebte
Wir lebten
Ihr lebtet
Sie lebten

Perfekt:
The Perfekt uses an auxiliary verb in the Präsens (present) and some special verb form, which is regulary formed by striking the -en out and replacing it with -t, and adding ge- at the beginning of the verb
Some verbs use "sein" and some "haben". Honestly, I don't know any rule to tell which one's use which since I'm a native German speaker and just know which one to take xD

But some conjuctions now wink

leben (haben)
Ich habe gelebt
Du hast gelebt
Er / Sie / Es hat gelebt
Wir haben gelebt
Ihr habt gelebt
Sie haben gelebt

laufen (sein) (The special-formthingie of this verb is irregular, but I don't find any better one right now)
Ich bin gelaufen
Du bist gelaufen
Er / Sie / Es ist gelaufen
Wir sind gelaufen
Ihr seid gelaufen
Sie sind gelaufen

Then, the next one's the Plusquamperfekt, which is used the same way as the past perfect. It's formed with "sein" und "haben" in the Präteritum and the special verb form thingie of the Perfekt.

spielen (haben):
ich hatte gespielt
du hattest gespielt
er/sie/es hatte gespielt
wir hatten gespielt
ihr hattet gespielt
sie hatten gespielt

gehen (sein):
ich war gegangen
du warst gegangen
er/sie/es war gegangen
wir waren gegangen
ihr wart gegangen
sie waren gegangen

I think that's it for regular verbs.. well, it doesn't include the passive forms, but I think you get the gist.
