There's an anime convention called Tora-con that's going to be occuring in Rochester NY this April, and there's going to be a cosplay contest there. From what I recall, it's not just dress-up, but acting as well. so, bearing those two factors in mind, I'm trying to decide what to go as this year.
1: Alucard from hellsing. I could write something up for him, but the costume seems a little out of my league.
2: D from Vampire Hunter D. The costume would be difficult, though, and all of the skits I can think of would involve two people.
3: Mr. Kimura from Azumanga Daioh. It would be easy, fun, and entertaining, but it would require a haircut, which I'm not getting.
4: Kyon from you know what. He'd be extroardinarily easy to dress up as, but in order to make a good skit, I'd have to have someone with me to do Haruhi, and there's pretty much nobody available.
Any ideas? I could use ideas for Alucard and D design, alternative characters, or a volunteer to come and play Haruhi opposite me.

Yeah, but the best thing about Kimura is that I could play him WITHOUT a partner. Since I don't have any anime-loving friends, that would be perfect, aside from the fact that I'd have to practically shave my head.
To Rouge: 6'4, brown hair that goes until about an inch below my shoulder-line, 250 pounds, and although I'm 21, I can make myself appear 30.
Most of my favorite animes are too obscure, but I also like CCS, Excel Saga, Tenchi Muyo, and other animes that don't have any good male characters. I also like Naruto and Death note, but I'm not doing anyone from those.
.. what else do you need to know?

Hmm, that's kinda hard...Either you need to cut your hair or go get a wig. Kyon and Kimura's hairs are short, and Alucard's hair is black.

just got to a costume store and pick up a wig for whichever one you pick. They're way better than the ones you find at Halloween time, even if they are a bit pricier, but it sounds like you're going for a quality costume, so that shouldn't be too big of an issue for you.

 Cosplaying takes a lot of money from you. Even if the costume looks simple, it could be really expensive. The blazer my partner got for the Haruhi dance was $70, and I looked online for cheaper blazers for the other dancers, and the blazers were even more expensive >.<

Yeah, my situation being the solitary one that it is, my first choice would be Kimura... I don't know of any costume stores in my area, much less any stores that sell wigs, but I should be able to come up with something. If I could find an appropriate wig, and putting such a short one on a head of such long hair as mine wouldn't be too difficult, then that would be perfect, because he'd definately be the most fun to play. I have his facial expressions, and tone of voice, down to a T.
Alternatively, if I chose Kyon, I wouldn't have to cut my hair much, but like I said, I'd need a partner. I guess I could write up a script for him with either Haruhi, Yuki, or Itsuki, if anyone in this guild lives in New York and would be willing to make the trip. I'd pay their way in, too, so woo-hoo, free convention for them.
Of course, with Kimura as my top option, the only reason I'd choose Kyon is to save myself the haircut and wig trouble.
Although I'm not stupid enough to throw hundreds of dollars into a costume I'll only wear once, money's really no object for me.
By the way, coloring my hair's also not an issue. That's easy enough, especially if the color's black.

I would think it's difficult for a man to do a skit alone. The men who do skits alone never win. From the masquerades (contests) I've seen, the only people that win solo skits are girls, and that's only because judges are impressed with beautiful cosplayers.

Well, good luck. Personally I think Alucard would be best for solo, but his costume is hard, unless you can find it in ebay.

For anyone still niterested in this thread, although I can't imagine why someone would be, I've decided to settle for Neji from Naruto. I have all the materials I need, save for a headband, and should have no problem preparing over the next two months.
