I stumbled upon http://www.aquabid.com/ today. They sell aquariums & supplies, but also live fish. I was looking at some gorgeous bettas and realized that most of them are shipped from Thailand. I didn't think mush of it until I read one with a DOA guarantee. (If you had it overnighted.)
How DO they make it to the states alive? Seems to me customs would hold up the poor little guys. Not to mention the freezing temps of an airplane cargo hold.

I don't know if I would buy a fish of any kind from there, even shipped from the U.S... I'm sure there is a method to shipping them successfully, but it seems risky.

I'm sure if you asked your local pet/fish store owner where he gets his beta's from, you would find quite a few who import them from overseas. They do have ways of keeping areas of airplane cargo holds heated for just this type of thing. I flew to the orient and took my cat with us and she had to fly in the cargo hold. Pets do it all the time, so if it wasn't safe, we have a lot of angry pet owners sueing the airlines.

Actually, it seems the fish seem to be in an overall good (albeit stressed.... and with good reason) condition when they arrive. The breeders put the betta in a bag, filling only about a third of it with clean tank water, so that the betta will stay in the water but still have plenty of air to breathe. They then put them in insulated box with cushioning, and a heat pack, so that the fish won't freeze. Betta are hardy fish, after all.... Just not safe from the atrocity of pet stores.
