From Madam Malkin's, you can see the vintage patio tables and chairs of Florean Fortesque's Ice Cream Parlour. The old man serves only the finest variety of magical flavors, with a fair selection of toppings.

T H E icecream in front of the young girl was the sweetest relief she had found to the day. Although she enjoyed returning to the great school of Hogwarts, she didn't like doing the shopping before going. She could stand it, after all who couldn't, but it was being so close to her parents and brother that she couldn't handel. Her brother with the perfection card played out in front of their parents, the parents who never saw her at all. Especially not since she'd been sorted into the house that was ashamed of her tainted blood, of her mother's blood, and her father for marrying someone of her mothers status and place in the world.

But she had somehow managed to escape them, their judging stares. Although she judged them herself, she didn't understand how her own parents could look at her like that; she was a teen and the hatred towards her parents was normal... but to have it the other way around? Should she perhaps go to see a doctor of sorts, or perhaps find a spell to make them real parents? But even then she supposed it would return to how it was now; after all, her brothers perfection was bound to push itself back into their eyes and push her, and her louds of faults in comparison, to the side. Was it normal to feel this way? Was there someone she could ask such a question, and better yet, was there anyone out there that could even answer it? Or was she nothing more than a hopeless cause, a bird with a broken wing?

She let out a sigh as she slid a spoon into her mouth, the ice cold ice cream sitting on the spoon. She left it there, spoon hanging from her mouth with icecream craddeled on it, as she leaned her head against the palm of her hand, her fingers limply tickling the skin next to her lips. She let a sigh escape her, the air rushing out her nose since she couldn't very well open her mouth without making a fool of herself. Am I pittying myself? she wondered, staring blankly at the chair across from her. I remember... she continued, eyes glazing over as she let a memory wash over her.

It was years ago, years upon years. She was about four or so, and her brother not much older; she really didn't remember since she really didn't care for his age. Nor him, for that matter. But she could see him sitting across from her in a seat, a cup of icecream in front of him, his brown hair hanging in a mushroom cut. He was greedily and happily eating his ice cream, his childish voice ringing around, wrapping her body in its softness, its nievatee [woah, bad spelling]. "Sky! Sky! See all those people out there?! They're going to Hogwarts soon! Can you imagine when we get there? Sky, we'll be in the same house, that's for sure! And I'll make sure to hurt anyone who makes fun of you, cuz that what' big brothers do!" he esclaimed, pounding a fist against his chest gently, a broad grin across his lips.

But as she let the memory slip, a smile tugged the corners of her lips for a moment. She gracefully removed the spoon, the icecream melted on her tongue as she swallowed. "You're such a liar," she whispered to no one, her mind still partly in the memory, not paying attention to her surroundings, nor the strange looks an occassional passerby would give her for the blank stare at an empty chair.

It didn't take Ryan too long to see his sister sitting at a table, staring at the seat across from her with a blank look about her; was she with someone? Had she escaped his watch to come here, to be with someone? Or had she just gotten a table by herself. Standing in front of the store across from the window where she sat, he thought and looked upon the scene, waiting a minute or two. Finally, he concluded she was there alone.

Something tugged at him inside, though he wasn't quite sure what. Was he feeling sorry for her, for her loneliness, or was it something else? He took a moment or two, looking around; this place, now that he looked, was fermiliar, and so was where Sky sat. A sad smile graced his lips as he pushed himself towards the door, through it, and sat almost immediately after entering, for the table where she sat was right next to the door.

"I'm still trying to keep those promises, Sky..." he started, looking at her with soft, caring eyes, his voice low and consoling, "So please... just let me. Sky, it doesn't have to be like this..." he continued on, but was suddenly interupted by the flick of her eyes. She looked up at him with such an intensity that he sat up quickly as though being reprimanded. His eyes grew wide a bit and his lips a tad tighter; was this really his sister? Had this been what he'd made of her all those years he'd ignored how she truely felt?

She pushed herself up and away from the table, standing at her height and looking down at him with those firy eyes. "Let's go," she practically hissed, not waiting and just started walking, passing him with nothing more than a whish of her hair trailing behind her, the door opening softly. He stayed for a moment, his heart pounding in his chest over the treatment she'd given him. He needed to get to Rain, that guy he'd seen her with countless of times, and try to figure this out. That would be his first task upon return to Hogwarts.

Getting up, he followed his sister out, walking quickly to catch up with her. He wanted to say so much, but he couldn't find the words to fit it; maybe that was where he'd failed all those years. And maybe that had been the spark to such a relationship.

Zaito watched as two people left the parlor in quick succession, the door just closing as he sidestepped the second person and grabbed the door for himself. 'Hope it's not the ice cream that's driving them away so quick or I may have to re-think my decision.' The thought was just another funny he was giving out to himself for this day. He wasn't very good at it mind you, but he did enjoy the act on rare occasions.

"Hello" he called as he walked up to the counter; old man Fortescue washing scoopers from behind. "I'd like a pumpkin pie flavored sugar ice cream cone with one scoop please" he declared as Fortescue looked back at him. "Coming right up" he announced with a booming voice and a friendly smile to boot. After a paying for his ice cream and the joygasm that racked his body with the first lick Zaito hopped off his seat and walked back out into the busy passage that was diagon alley in hopes of seeing his wife once more.

He had plenty of time and a patient young man Zaito was. That same patience dammed him to spending the next few minutes watching the passerbys and observing what pleasant idiosyncrasies he could in wait for his future wife. As he waited he continued to slowly lick his ice cream cone, swirling the semi-rough texture of the sugary and hardened waffle substance in his hands to keep the ice cream from running down any particular side and getting his hands sticky. 'I wonder what else I could do on this fine day before time catches up with me?' the young boy wondered, wracking his mind and finding nothing that he'd forgotten. 'Ah well, if worst comes to worst one can never have too many books' he decided as the newly published "Guide to Advanced Aviary Transiguration" came to mind. He'd guess that a new shipment must've come into flourish and blott's wizarding bookstore by now.

User ImageMaybe it was best to be somewhere... else. The long-haired Leo craved attention. The deserted ice cream parlour was not exactly the place to attract any. Rosaline couldn't help but to think of more and more reasons to leave. She had been chilly enough outside, it wasn't very smart to buy ice cream at the moment. She was supposed to be a good, intelligent example for the rest of the school. It was a curse that came with being sorted into Ravenclaw. But Rosaline could have a blonde moment now and then, couldn't she? Plus, she was getting a bit hungry.

She had entered the shop just 3 minutes ago, as it turned 3 o' clock. It definitely had not been a long line to wait in, and Rosaline wished that she had more time to decide on her order. Now, she was standing at the counter, glad that Mr. Fortescue was a kind old man. The only thing Rosaline was worried about was her indecisive manner. After all, she knew people could get very testy when they lost their patience, especially old men. A shiver ran down her back, and she now thought it an even worse idea to come in the shop.

Rosaline scanned the toppings, as it seemed there were no biscuits or candies, except those for toppings. But she just couldn’t see herself asking, ‘May I have a cup of those chocolate chips?’ No, she was surprised the idea even entered her mind. Rosaline was tempted to laugh, but her social conscience reminded her not to. She had already had her dose of strange that day, bumping into Alanis.

Deciding it was best to not keep Mr. Fortescue waiting. In her politest, but most persuasive voice, she ordered. “Excuse me, may I have a scoop of French Vanilla in a regular cup? I would like that with hot fudge, as well, hot enough to melt the ice cream.” She laughed appropriately and pleasantly. “I’m
afraid that I came a bit underdressed for the breeze outside.”
After she paid 7 Sickles and 20 Knuts
for her ice cream, Rosaline leaned against the counter to watch the old man create it.

Zaito watched the girl from his seat outside the parlor. Slowly eating his ice cream and having nothing better to do he studied the way the girl carried herself; looking for anything that caught his interest for another...experiment of his. Last years experiments had been quite successful. Unfortunately, only one of last years targets was coming back to school this year and he doubted it would be long before that particular experiment was over. Boredom was not something Zaito wanted to deal with this year. He wrote studies on his magical brethren as he conducted his research, gaining more and more proof pointing to the fact that purebloods, muggleborns, half-bloods and muggles were all the same in terms of mental capacity and degradation.

Of course, that was just his cover for the real reason why he did his "projects." Without any friend to keep him busy, and only so many hours he was willing to draw and read in any given day, small pranks and his experiments were what kept him sane. Well, sane for him anyways and that's the Zaito you'd want most. An insane Zaito was like Voldemort on prozzak. No matter how you say it you know it's bad.

'Screw it. This is taking much too long to obtain my wife, I'll just go to the bookstore and mark the girl later' he decided. It obviously took mere seconds to forget the ravenclaw getting her ice cream even existed. To him, there was only his books and his ice cream. It was just going to be another 2 minutes before he was done is all...

On the way to Fortescue's, Aidan slowed for half a second to look into the bookstore. He'd spotted Alice's bright red hair. 'Wow she's gotten pretty over the summer,' he thought, and smiled to himself. Maybe he could persuade her to see the 'good' in him, also.

The feeling of Melanie's hand in his brought him back to the present as they came to the ice cream parlor. Aidan's mother, Clarice, sat outside eating a bowl of icecream. She wore a set of beautiful venom green robes, and her hair was pulled back into a chignon, with a beautiful silver comb in it. She certainly did not look her age, which was around 35. No, she could've passed for twenty-something. She had Aidan's green eyes, and fair hair, but her skin was much paler than his, and she had a very frail build.

"Hello, Mother," said Aidan as they walked up. "Hello, darling," she said, smiling up at them. "Who is your beautiful friend?" "Ah, yes. Mother, this is Melanie. She's a fellow Slytherin, I've just found her in Twilfit & Tattings and invited her to ice cream." With a smile and nod at Mrs. Reese, he led Melanie off into the ice cream parlor, and stood in front of the counter, looking at all the different flavors. "What would you like?" he asked. Luckily for Melanie, Aidan didn't mind spending whatever it took on a girl.

'I'll have her won over by the end of the day,' he thought. He let go of her hand and put his arm gently around her waist, barely touching her so as not to make her feel uncomfortable, but as soon as he got a sign from her that she liked it, he'd pull her in closer, inch by inch. True, Aidan has always had a habit of moving quickly with a girl, but he couldn't help it. He was a man, after all.

Melanie felt the chilly air once again hit her as they walked out of Twilfit and Tatting's. The thought of turning around to go back to Mac and Hollywood also lingered in her mind. But Aidan was leading the way to the ice cream parlor, so she decided against the idea. But she couldn't help but feel guilty when she kept walking along with a boy her two best friends didn't have a liking for. Melanie almost looked back to see if they followed, but it'd be impossible with the sea of people.

Melanie could have recognized Aidan's mother from a mile away. She had met her a few times, but never that formally. She didn't know her age, but since Aidan was about to turn seventeen, she guessed that she wasn't twenty-five. She smiled at Mrs. Reese and shyly but sweetly said, "It's nice to see you Mrs. Reese." She would have liked to stay and talk to Aidan's mom but she was soon taken up to the counter to order. She smiled and looked at Aidan. "I don't know what I want yet excatly..let me think about it for a few seconds..." She turned her attention back to the counter looking at all the different flavors. Her widened at all the different choices. She had decided just a few seconds later.

She turned around to Aidan to tell her what she wanted to have just as he gently wrapped his arm around her waist. She smiled shyly and then asked innocently, "Can I have a vanilla sundae with hot fudge, whip cream, and nuts?" After asking that she gave tried to give him the puppy eyes with her peircing blue ones, but it was hard due to the slight hold he had on her around her waist. She wished she could look him fully in the eyes and be able to see what he was thinking, but unfortunately she didn't have Hollywood's "gift."

"Of course, you can have whatever you want," he smiled at her. 'So she doesn't mind...' he thought, noting that she'd made no protest to his holding her. He pulled it tighter around her, just very slightly. 'Aww she's making puppy-dog eyes at me!' he thought, and smiled wider. That was one of his favorite parts of girls, the way they always thought they had to make the cute faces to get what they wanted with him.

He stepped up to the counter, pulling her gently along, and said to the man behind it, "I'll take two hot fudge sundaes with whipped cream and nuts, and put a cherry on top of one of them."

He removed his arm around Melanie's waist to pull out his wallet and extract a few bills. He didn't like pulling out his wallet in front of a girl, he thought it extremely tactless, but one had to do it in order to pay for something. He handed the bills to the man behind the counter, and took the ice creams.

"Where shall we sit?" he asked, not wanting very much to go back out and sit with his mother. He didn't put his arm back around Melanie, nor did he take her hand. For one thing, he was holding two ice creams, and for another, he wanted her to feel the absence of his arm and miss it. Just another one of those tricks he'd learned over the years.

[ forgive the delay! also, aidan is seventeen going on eighteen, because skye said so. i don't really get it, but she said they don't get their letters until their eleven, so i just forgot to go back and change his age in his profile. and, sorry, i totally forgot about saying that melanie and aidan's mother had already met, but aidan's mother isn't the kind of person who would remember a face, so aidan just goes along with it and introduces people several times. ]

Melanie smiled when she realized that he didn't mind buying a sundae for her. She clapped and said childishly, "Yay! You're so sweet!" Melanie smiled up at him, though he was hardly taller than her. She was pulled up carefully to the counter by Aidan and she once again looked at all the flavors and toppings. All the colors facinated her and she smiled.

Aidan ordered while she observed him. She saw the hesitance when he borught out his wallet and she looked him him with curious eyes. She noticed his question and she shrugged. "We can sit anywhere. It doesn't really matter, after all, I wouldn't even be in here about to eat ice cream if it weren't for you dear."

Melanie smiled and sat down at a table near the window, she liked to people watch. She knew it would be a danger sitting there with all sorts of girls passing by, but she was interested to see what he looked at. She smiled. "Is here good? If not, we can move to your liking. Perhaps by yuor mother? She said the last part quietly, she wasn't too keen on sitting near his mother, her being a death eater and all, but she'd live through it if she had to. Right?

(( It's okay, sorry for the short reply! Wasn't too much to work on and Melanie's a bit unsure right now! ))

"No, I'd rather not sit with her..." he said, and sat down across from Melanie. He set her ice cream in front of her, and gazed out the window. 'Quite a nice view,' he thought, watching a couple 6th year girls walk past, giggling. He quickly returned his gaze to Melanie.

"So, are you excited to be going back to Hogwarts?" he asked. He rolled up his sleeves, revealing tanned and weathered arms and a large leather bracelet, branded with a snake. He took a bite of his sundae, making sure not to get any on his face. He hated being seen with food on his face, it was disgusting.

He was quite happy to be sitting here with Melanie, she really was a sweet girl, but he couldn't help himself from glancing out the window every few minutes, with so many pretty girls passing by. He wasn't just interested in their faces, though. Too bad for him, today was a cool day, which meant bodies were covered up much more that usual for the end of summer.

Melanie though she didn't show it at all with her facial expressions was very glad that Aidan didn't want to sit with his mother. Who knew what the woman could have possibly gotten out of her? She could have found out about her parents, which was bad. Very bad. She couldn't ever let that happen. She wouldn't endanger again like she once did when she was a little girl. No, it wouldn't ever happen like that again. Melanie decided that she would have to be very careful around Aidan, and try to avoid the questions asked by him about her parents. though it'd be hard to, she'd lie.

When she was brought back to reality, Melanie ate her ice cream sundae happily, her eyes showed her emotions very much when she was like this. Right now they were peircing but yet with light shining in them, to make them look not so cold as they sometimes did when she was concentrating. Melanie nodded after she carefully wiped her mouth with a napkin. 'Just in case..' Melanie thought.

Her eyes were now shining, she loved Hogwarts and was very glad to go back. "Oh yes! I'm very excited about going back. Ever since I was little I dreamed about going to Hogwarts. And now it's true I guess..." She nervously laughed. "I know that sounds corny but it's true..." Now, Melanie had noticed Aidan's quick glances out the windows, she was quick afterall. And she wasn't dumb to most facts. He was in fact a male. She herself didn't mind looking out the window to see a boy she fancied. She tended to go for the type with bright blue or green eyes.

Melanie thought 'Does he think I'm boring or not pretty?' She then noticed she never asked him the question he asked her. She asked hesitantly, "So..are you excited to go to back to school Aidan?" She did know he had trouble with school, which she didn't. She even had to tutor Hollywood.

"No, Mel, it's not corny. I think everyone who knows about Hogwarts feels that way at some time. Whether it's to get away from parents or get to be around new people. Or maybe just learn stuff." He laughed. Of course, Aidan learned things, but he didn't like it very much.

He looked back at her, and smiled. She was ten times prettier than the girls outside. The only thing that bothered him about her was her age. She was so young! Of course, it wouldn't really matter much, but still...he couldn't help but feel like he was robbing the cradle.

"Well, no, not for the schooling part. I hate the classes, but I do like to be back with friends again." Not that he had any. 'Shut up, Aidan,' he thought to himself. 'Don't go getting all sad. It's your own fault you don't trust anyone.' He sighed.

"It's my last year, so I guess I'll have to make the best of it," he smiled at her. He knew that she was smart at school, and liked it. Well, he could be too, but when something doesn't hold his interest, he doesn't spend any time on it.

Melanie smiled at him sincerely when he told her that her reply wasn't corny. She didn't know if he was telling the truth but it seemed like it with his reply. So she smiled at him, with her eyes sparkling in interest. She could have laughed when he talked about learning things. She did know that he didn't too well in school, but only because he didn't apply himself. Just like Hollywood she smiled a small smiole while she thought this. Though they didn't know it, they were alike in that area. They didn't care for studies. Hollywood didn't like it because was the same routine basically and he couldn't grasp things quickly. What was the reason for Aidan's grades? She knew it'd be rude to ask, so she kept the question to herself.

She laughed. "Yea, it's good to see friends again, but besides Mac, Hollywood...and you..." She was hesitant about calling him her friend for some reason. "I don't really have that many." She paused to let him answer.

She kept on forgetting she was three years younger than Aidan and to her she was quite sad about that age difference. She knew if he wasn't interested, it'd because of the age difference. 'Does my age matter to him?' Yes, it did, she somehow knew. She looked into his eyes and said honestly, "I'm very sure that it's going to be wonderful...just like you.." She said the last part quietly, but loud enough so that he could hear it.

"I'm thrilled you consider me one of your friends," he smiled. Gawd, all this smiling was getting on his nerves. Why did girls like guys who smiled so much? 'Of course she considers me a friend! Who wouldn't want to be able to call me their friend?' it was telling himself things like these that kept him sane, kept him from depression. He knew, deep, deep down inside, that not many people actually liked him. Playing dumb, sometimes, pretending that people liked him for him, was the only way to keep himself happy.

In that place deep inside, he wondered why she really liked him. Of course, he knew. It was because of his looks, because of the way he looked at her. Because of the way he cheated her into believing he cared about her. But in a way it felt good. He knew he could never stay with her. She was too happy for him, too nice. He'd end up hurting her just like every other girl he'd ever been with. He didn't like hurting girls, but he liked playing with them. Not in a mean, torturing way, but he liked pretending he loved them, because to him, pretending to love was at least one step closer to actually loving someone in his life.

Aidan was very indecisive about his personality. Of course, everything he felt, he decided to feel, but sometimes he couldn't decide how he was going to act, and he switched around. With Melanie today, he'd decided he'd have a good time, pretending to be a good friend, who liked her as more, but now all he wanted to do was leave. He didn't want to hurt her, somehow she was different than all the other girls. He couldn't just pick her up and drop her. Aidan couldn't decide if this time he wanted to take advantage of Melanie, or become friends with Melanie. She was so trusting, and kind, and insecure.

He took the cherry off the top of his sundae and popped it into his mouth, pulling the stem out and setting it on the table beside the ice cream bowl. The comment about him being wonderful was what got him. Here he'd end their wonderful day together, as friends. He'd go along with his plan of making her believe he liked her, as a friend and more.

"Thank you, Melanie. You're a wonderful friend, too. I'm really sorry, but I've got to go. Got a bit more shopping to do, and you should get back to your friends. I'll see you at the station." He stood and hugged her, and left the ice cream parlor just as quickly as he'd entered. He muttered a few words to his mother on the way out, and walked off down Diagon Alley, leaving his sundae to melt behind him.
