I imagine everyone notices little things in the show that seem to hint at something more. So, why not have a thread about it? Discuss symbolism on the show, in everyday life, or just something you come up with on your own!

While looking through the forums I found Nacht-Ritter's opinion on foreshadowing. (Found here
)

Nacht-Ritter
Toph/Aang is the pairing of Subtlety; as such, one must search for what evidence there is and make connections at key points.

Evidence can be found for this pairing in:

The Swamp: "We see visions of people we've lost, people we love." "Time is an illusion, so is death."
The Seige of the North: Compare Ummi to Toph. The Momo Motif. The pale green soul.
The Avatar and the Firelord: "Can Friendship's Last Through Lifetimes?"
The Blind Bandit: Just finalizing that Toph is the girl in the Swamp
Nightmares and Daydreams: Faceless Toph: Proof that Toph is Ummi.

Since Nightmares and Daydreams pretty much proves that Toph is Ummi (Avatar Kuruk's Wife), we already have the foundations of an, at the minimal, spiritual relationship. In Concert with "The Avatar and the Firelord" and the evidence it gives that relationships last through lifetimes, that pretty much says that they will at least be together for a short amount of time.

Now, time is an illusion in The Swamp, and you see visions of people you love. Sokka saw Yue, and he lost her rather recently. And, rather importantly, he loves her. Katara sees her mother, and she lost her several years before hand. Intresting that, if time is such an illusion, that she sees her mother, and no one else*. And, as we all no, Aang sees a laughing girl in a white kimono, accompanied by a winged boar. Toph, who is acting suspiciously like Ummi was described to.

Note the similarities between the chase she puts Aang through in the Swamp, and the path the Pale Green Soul leads Aang down in "The Seige of the North." Both through a swamp, both taking the same turns, both leading towards a monster that wears a mask rather than a Face.

One of these "Monsters" is Hue in disguise, and he gives Aang sage advice. The other, of course, is the daemon Koh, the stealer of faces. Who just happens to have Ummi's face in his possesion, taken as a punishment of Avatar Kuruk for being a braggart. This seems completely unrelated until a later episode.

This episode, of course, is Nightmares and Daydreams. All of Aang's little imaginations are similar to any twelve year olds, right down to the mutual confession of love between him and "The Girl of his Dreams." Note how similar that act is to a daydream Harry Potter had about Cho Chang (whom he did not end up with). Then, the last one.

It opens, creepy giant Momo of Dhoom, attacking Appa (Possibly a minor foreshadowing of the Legendary battle of Momo and Appa to later occur that episode?). Then, a tower strangely reminscent of The Dark Tower. Then, Jackpot.

The faceless Toph! If that's not proof of Toph being Ummi, I'd like to see some better evidence against before it's dismissed. Also... Aang though about Toph first! What? Wouldn't he be more worried about Katara (Psycologically, in disaster dreams such as that, you generally dream of people in danger in the order of how much you care about them.), if Kataang was canonical? Nope, he's worried about Toph the most, proving that Taang is canon, or at the least has as big a shot as Kataang.

If you want to refut this, make your best attempt. Just please, stay on topic (Its a TAANG thread dammit! Keep you flippin' Zutara out of here.) Also, please provide episodic, or psycological evidence for your arguments. No "T4hts n0t tru3 c4us3 Kat44ng is t3h cut3n3ss." All arguments like that will be ignored as Fan-Rants, in l33tspeak or otherwise.

Whoa. o.o I had never thought about half of those things, but it all makes perfect sense. I mean, the comment in 'The Avatar and The Firelord' seemed like a random, feel good kind of moment when I first watched it, but now I see how it could tie into the plot with a much, much deeper meaning. Same goes for Koh's comment about Ummi.

My faith in Taang is now a billion times stronger. =D

Nacht, I love you. >w< You've explained it all so well.

The only bit I'm skeptical about is when you said that "Taang is canon, or at least has a big a shot as Kataang". I'm all for Taang, no contest, but in the long run it does have less canon stuff than Kataang. I don't think it has AS big a shot. However, Taang is a good, subtle thing, and if it doesn't happen in this season, well, there's always hope for the future.

True. Though, when you think about it, none of the pairings are canon yet, so they all have an equal shot at it.

I guess we'll just have to see how the rest of the series plays out.

That's pretty interesting. I don't think that the creators would've planned it THAT far ahead, but then again...Bryke keeps surprising us...

Yeah, and does everyone remember "Digimon Adventure"? During the first season, we all thougt that Tai liked Sora and vice versa. In "Digimon Adventure 02", we find out that Sora and Matt get together...It was a big shock.

Maybe the creators want to surprise us as well.

I remember that show! Well, sort of. xD But, yeah, I tink I know what you're talking about - creators love to surprise their audience, so we can never be too certain of what's gonna happen.

Personally, I'm curious about what Aang's dream in 'Nightmares and Daydreams' means. You know, the part where it shows Toph and she has no eyes? Yeah. I'd like to know what that's all about.

I get the feeling it's a bad omen, though, so maybe I'd rather not figure it out. >>

I think it's kinda neat how, in the finale, Aang saw Ozai moving to attack him because of Toph-vision (aka: seeing through his feet), and was able to stop him before he got killed. It's just an interesting little touch that was added.

Also, Toph said she punches people to show affection. How often does she punch Aang? 8D
