Want to make an afghan or practice some new stitches? Join the Square-a-Month Club!

When I started this thread my plan was to make one 12" square a month and finish the afghan by next Christmas. I started the Wheel Lattice Square which is 12" with an 'I' hook but I used an 'H' and thought I could just make up the difference with some extra border. BUT... it ended up being 9.5" and that was way too much border to add. On top of that I realized that 12" squares look HUGE! I don't think I'd like the look of it with such big squares so I changed my game plan.

Now the plan is to make 8" squares which means I will need to make 3 a month to have enough for the afghan by Christmas. And instead of using several different squares, I am making them all Wheel Lattice squares and just leaving a couple of rows out to make them 8". I'm using 3 or 4 different shades of brown but I need to get some more yarn.

I got very close to getting three squares out of my one skein of Lion Brand Vana's Choice. I have finished another square with Wool-Ease so I have 4 squares out of 35 that I will need.

I have never made an afghan before. The squares are fun to make but I am a little worried about joining them together but I'd really love to be able to give my grandmother an afghan since she is the one who taught me how to crochet.

I'm ready to join you on this awesomely geometric quest! I'll be knitting my squares with stitches from my stitch dictionary. I've decided to work my first set in Ripple Pattern. ^-^ I'll post a picture once I have one done. As I possess this massive collection of sage and cream yarn, I think that's what I'll use.
It was donated to me by a yarn-addict attempting to reduce her hoard when she was moving. She's an older lady, so volunteered to do the heavy lifting for her and was rewarded with a large box of yarn. Huzzah for good deeds!
Do you work with Vana's Choice alot Jain? I'm rather fond of it myself. She has some lovely varigated.

Yay, thanks for joining me! That is awesome - yarn for good deeds, can't go wrong there. I think cream and sage sounds like a beautiful combination.

Actually this is the first time I have used Vana's Choice. I got a gift card for Christmas to a craft store that I never go to and when I got there it turned out to be mostly fabric with a little tiny yarn selection. So I used all $50 on yarns that I have never tried before - Vana's Choice, Wool-Ease and Microspun.

I really like the Vana's Choice, it was great to work with and it comes in some really cool colors. I got one each of Taupe, Olive, and Dusty Green and I used the Taupe for this project. The Taupe is a dark brown (I thought taupe was like khaki but I guess I was wrong lol) and I am also using some Wool-Ease in Mushroom (a lighter brown). So far I have found the Wool-Ease to be a little scratchy.

I've got to choose one more shade of brown (or two?) and get back to the store to stock up. I need to sit down and draw out how I want to arrange the color blocks and what color to do the border/joining. I'll go upload my picture of the block I did...

Here's what the taupe blocks look like. I need to take another picture with more light, sorry.

It's not a hard pattern at all, I like it a lot. I got five more skeins of yarn for this afghan today.

Edit: finished another block tonight... 5/35.

I've been working on a knit-stitch blanket for years now, but it's still not quite as big as I would like smile Each square is 6". I'll try some of these patterns sometimes, to make my afghan a little more interesting. Right not it's very colorful - I'll see if I can get pics up on here sometime! cool

Here is a picture of my blocks. There are two colors of blocks and I am going to choose a third color to seam them all together but I can't decide whether to go lighter or darker. I'm thinking lighter like a tan or khaki or something, would that look okay?

I think tan sounds good with those colors.

I looooooove crocheting granny squares. It's really relaxing and you memorize the pattern after awhile. Plus, they're small so they're easy to carry around and work on anywhere.

I haven't done any knitting or crocheting in so long, but I might start working on some squares to get back into it. biggrin

I agree, it is relaxing especially once you have the pattern memorized and you can just crank them out. Squares are also fun to practice new stitches. I'd like to make a blanket where every block is a different stitch.

I need to make some more squares in the next couple of days. I haven't done any in a while.

I'm soooo far behind on everything. T-T
School got all crazy like (though I did get the stitch dictionary that I wanted twisted ) and I haven't had the time to finish anything!
I did finish my valentines pillow (Yesterday -_-0) though they ended up being simpler than I had planned them. I haven't got any of my blocks done yet, though I plan on hitting them pretty hard this weekend. Pictures as they come out!

I am behind on this too. I'm making an ami that's almost done, when it's finished I will be working the last few rounds of a potholder and then I need to crank out a few more squares. My goal was three a month and I do have six done so technically I guess I'm okay but I will need extra time to stitch them all together too. sweatdrop
