Nisu had slept long in his stone shell. The world had changed around him, and with the sleep, a fading of memories.
The air once again moved in the vault around him. And a glimpse of the sun filtering in through the dust laden air drew Nisu towards the open outside.
But movement, the sounds of people, the risk of discovery before he even knew what he had awakened to kept Nisu in the dark stillness of a room long buried. The sphinx named King would wait and creep out when he wouldn't be observed. The ancient being only now returned from dormancy would stay safely hidden until he understood what dangers awaited him.

As the sun sank in the evening sky, the sounds of movement outside the room in which Nisu had awakened faded. Waiting until darkness fully takes the sky, Nisu creeps out into the fresh air of the desert, the cold quickly sapping away the heat of the day.

The stars shining overhead, Nisu looks about at the endless sand broken only by the occasional ruin or dig-site tent. As he sees movement in one of the tents, he scurries around the side of the ruins he had just emerged from and crouched down to watch.

Noticing an opening to another tomb, Nisu is filled with curiosity. And on the air is the scent of another sphinx. It would be nice not to be alone.
Still not returned fully to his majestic sphinx body, the ball of fluff that is Nisu creeps into the tomb.
Slowly working from room to room, he notices where things have been cleaned and boxed. In one of the boxes comes the scent of another sphinx. The lid had not yet been closed so Nisu looks in, seeing a statue in marbled pink. A cat statue. From the statue comes the scent of the other sphinx, a female. He looks at the symbols on the base, Iti, musician.
While Nisu doesn't particularly remember his time as a statue, or what he looked like while of stone body, he feels fairly certain that this is another sphinx. A sphinx who has not yet awakened but who could be in danger should the box be closed and taken from this place.
Wishing he had hands, Nisu takes quite a while struggling to get the statue out of the box. He winces with each loud scraping and looks about constantly to ensure they are not being observed.
By the time Nisu has gotten Iti out of the box and dragged her to the opening, the moon has reached it's peak. I do not understand why she has not yet awakened. Yet it is no matter, I shall not leave her to fate to destroy. I have had no other sense of my kind, she shall be protected.
And while Nisu didn't remember much of himself, that much he remembered, that his people were worth protecting and that it was his role to do so.

As the ball of fluff sphinx drags the stone statue sphinx away from the ruins, a Lion cub watches, eyes wide.
Akeruab wonders, Are they what we are waiting for? They don't look like much.
