Information coming from a “reliable inside source” has said that Sony will replace the phased out 80GB PS3 with one containing a 120GB to 160GB hard drive. The company will supposedly still offer two versions of the PS3 and keep the same pricing scheme.
When current supplies of the 80GB PS3 run out, that will probably be when Sony strikes with the new PS3. It seems just a little strange to offer 40GB and 160GB versions of the PS3. Which is a huge difference in storage space. It would make more sense to offer an 80GB version, phase out the 40GB and offer the choice of an 80GB or 160GB version.
ArsTechnica claims that the “reliable inside source” is “right almost every time” and there is little reason to doubt that this is what’s going to happen.
Sony is phasing out the 80GB PS3, this is certain, it still doesn’t make sense if the rumor is true but Sony doesn’t have to make sense.
The source also claims that the Spider Man 3 PS3 bundle will disappear. The replacement pack is rumored to be the 120GB or 160GB PS3 with a Dual-Shock 3 controller.
Sony may be well on its way to overtaking the Xbox 360 if these plans pan out. Combine the Xbox 360s somewhat unreliable hardware, lack of WiFi or built-in HD playback and the PS3 looks like a real winner, not to mention that it’s the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market. Blu-Ray player, gaming console, free online service, media device and the thought of a 160GB hard drive just makes it all the more tempting.
Microsoft had a good run, but it’s time to pass the crown to someone else. Hello Sony, old friend, it’s good to have you back.

Got a link? Its always good to provide a link to the article so people won't get on you for this news, and rather you just spreading some good information.
But its a great find and I'm hoping its true. After all the games I'll get for the PS3, my memory will be rather low, so it'd be nice to grab a bigger harddrive.

would'nt you have to buy a another ps3 with 800$? or 600$? well i dont have the mony to buy another one,you see,im not full of mony,and my parents bought it,and i know there not made of mony...

hmmmmmmmmmm another PS3 which is gonna suck what about the ppl who just went out and bought the 40GBs and said this is the best im prob gonna get then they released a 160GB i would be pissed

we all know Americans like and prefers American based stuff even if it inferior, so the 360 will and stay the number one console in America over the ps3. it will be in europe and asia that the fight will continues and an increased hard drive isn't going to do much i don't think

Over here in the US, these new PS3's aren't going to do much. People don't buy them over here because they think it is over-priced to begin with. Bigger hard drives just equals a bigger price tag. Over where you are is where Sony is going to rise again. From what I hear: PS3 is huge on that side of the Atlantic. Gates better have a way out of this, otherwise, he'll lose the European and Asian side to Sony twisted

So what your saying is the 360 is cheaper and will keep getting cheaper. the ps3 is more expensive and will get cheaper but it might take some time for it to reach the 360. plus like twilightwolfkiller said and what i also believe america isn't going to be effected much my cost rather than they like american own products
