Anyone who knows me really well, can get me all riled up by asking, "Who is the better drummer, Neil Peart (of obviously rush) or John Bonhom (of Led Zepplin)?" Anyone who knows anything about classic rock will know that these two are/were (John is dead) debatebly the best drummers ever. In my opinion, John was quicker than Peart, but Peart is more creative and I favour him more. What do you think?

I'm a fan of Led Zeppelin myself. Really, they're one of my favorite bands. But there's just no comparison. I can name at least 10 drummers right off the bat that were better than John Bonham. I can only think of one that could even touch Neil Peart, and that's Buddy Rich. And I just like Peart more than Rich.
Bonham was good, but next to Peart there's really no comparison. Bonham was a drummer, Peart's a percussionist. Bonham did drum solos, Peart does percussive compositions. Oh, and Peart's a helluvalot faster than Bonham when he wants to be.

I love Peart too, but I disagree. Your right, in terms of creativity and variety Peart is better, but Bonhom was just plain faster. I'd also like to mention that both Bonhom and Moon (from The Who) were drum inspirations for Peart and that their styles were incoporated into Pearts awesomeness.

Cool_Hand_Jay I love Peart too, but I disagree. Your right, in terms of creativity and variety Peart is better, but Bonhom was just plain faster. See, I just don't see where you're getting that. O Baterista was faster than anything Bonham ever did, and that's when Peart was around 50 years old. Besides; if how great a drummer is is based soley on speed then neither Neil Peart nor John Bonham are/were great drummers. Hell, compared to people like Gene Hoglan, they suck. Gene Hoglan has to wear weights on his ankles so he doesn't go too fast. And even then he's undoubtedly faster than Peart and Bonham combined. But technically, he can't touch either. Quote: I'd also like to mention that both Bonhom and Moon (from The Who) were drum inspirations for Peart and that their styles were incoporated into Pearts awesomeness. True, though neither of them were better than Peart, in my opinion.

First, I'd like to say that o'baterista was NOT written when he was 'like 50' yet it was a drum solo derivitive of the solo that had been in yyz.
Second of all, In terms of speed, there are only a couple of sections in o' baterista that speed is the key influence in the song.
Also, I'd like to mention that most Bonhom solos were based on rapid drumming, so how you can say Peart was faster baffles me.
Finally, no, your right, speed shouldn't be a drummers sole purpose, otherwise they would indeed suck. Yet speed along with variety, creativity and imagination are the building blocks of the best drummers.

Cool_Hand_Jay First, I'd like to say that o'baterista was NOT written when he was 'like 50' yet it was a drum solo derivitive of the solo that had been in yyz. Well, it was written in 2004. Neil Peart was born in 1952. So I suppose he was 52? My bad. rolleyes Quote: Second of all, In terms of speed, there are only a couple of sections in o' baterista that speed is the key influence in the song. Also, I'd like to mention that most Bonhom solos were based on rapid drumming, so how you can say Peart was faster baffles me. O Baterista becomes immensely fast, and you are correct in saying that it's not his fastest piece. 'Twas merely an example. I honestly can't think of anything Bonham ever did that got any faster than O Baterista. And even if he did, I could pull out something from the 70's that I'm almost sure would beat it in speed, if that's what you're after. Give me an example, please. 52 when he created the rest of it, and gave it a name. I was merely pointing out a fact. Don't look at me in that tone of voice, lol. As for many others in the 70's who have immense speed, I can also show you others, but that doesn't matter because it's John vs. Neil. Let me see if I can find a youtube for a Moby d**k drum solo... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRuTcnd8YLUSee an example of speed and accuracy here, best part probably about one minute and 50 sec in. I've seen the solo for moby d**k done longer but I was to lazy to search for a better one, to be honest, hehe. I agree he beats him in everything, except for speed. Now that I think about it, he possibly ties in creativity seeing as how led zepplin, as you know, have experimented in many different form of music.

1, It's Bonham, not Bohnom 2, it's Led Zeppelin, not Zepplin
My opinion on the matter.
John Bonham had the most talent and speed. Hands down. Neil had the best drums set and a lot of creativity. Keith Moon was the craziest, most spontaneous and also extremely fast.
I think John and Keith are better than Neil, but that's just my opinion.
