Can KakaNaru really work? Well, why not?

Anyone can fall in love given the right circumstances. And Naruto is just someone that you can fall in love with, no matter what the age difference or what your past relationship with him was. Kakashi, despite his perverted, happy front, needs Naruto just as much as Sasuke, or Gaara, or Neji, because Kakashi is just as mentally handicapped as they are, if not more so. (Well, maybe not in the case of Gaara, but you know what I mean biggrin ).

Kakashi lost his entire team, or at least most of it. From what I understand, we don't really know what happened to Rin, only that she disappeared. And Obito and Yondaime died, both in the worst circumstances possible. Naruto is the only thing Kakashi has left of his old mentor. And, quite frankly, Kakashi needs a Naruto in his life.

Naruto is a personal sunshine. He helps people, sometimes without even realizing he's doing so, by being himself. But, what sometimes people like to forget, is that Naruto is alone too. He needs someone just as much as other people do, sometimes even more so considering his childhood. He didn't turn out the way Gaara did, but he's still lonely. And while Kakashi isn't the best to fill that place in Naruto's heart (the best people would be someone like Sakura or Ino; the ones with barely any emotional troubles and little mental trauma), he's equipped with everything needed to help Naruto, just as Naruto is equipped with everything needed to help Kakashi.

To put it in simple terms; they can heal each other. And what kind of relationship is better than that?
