This is a short story by me. It isn't too long. I am looking for constructive criticism, and don't be afraid to be brutal. Also, I am willing to pay anyone who is able to tell me where I got the title for this story, and for what reason I named it this.___________________________________ He drifted farther and farther into the deep darkness of the abyss. The dark was seemingly never ending. As he twisted and turned in space, contorting his body into shapes not physically possible within reality, he could see nothing but nothingness all around him. It would be very difficult to describe the sight. It wasn't as if he was blind. His ability to see was perfect, evident by him being able to look down (or is it up) and see his body. He could see everything as clear as if it were a bright and sunny day, there just wasn't anything to see. The lack of wind resistance in this strange dimension made it impossible to tell how fast he was falling, or if he was even falling at all. For all he knew, he could be floating upward, or he could simply be suspended in mid nothing. The fear that had at first conquered his mind had since crawled back into the well of emotions it had come from. Now his mind was overtaken by an extreme sense of boredom at the thought of floating/falling/hanging in this realm for the rest of eternity. He tried hopelessly to occupy his time with simplistic games. From playing rock, paper, scissors with himself to re-tying his shoe laces. In the end he felt even worse: knowing he had absolutely nothing to do was worse then simply thinking he did. He began to worry again, going back to that horrible, hopeless, helpless feeling that he had had when he first awoke in this place. Wanting to ease his mind as much as possible, he slipped his hands into his pocket for more comfortability, and he was surprised when his left hand hit something. He pulled out the strange object, and it wasn't until he rested his eyes on it that he realized it was an mp3 player. He was overjoyed at the sight of it, and in his mind he quickly ran through samples of all of his favorite songs, all of which he now had in his hand. The excitement was swiftly and briefly eclipsed by a feeling of stupidity at having forgotten about this little piece of technological heaven. This feeling didn't last long though, as it was soon pushed out of his mind by returned euphoria. Putting the ear buds in and turned the mp3 player on, he let his body relax and allowed himself to drift in the air, finding the feeling pleasurable now that he had something enjoyable to do. He was in this state for hours upon hours (which he could now gauge, simply adding up the lengths of all the songs he had listened to). With the sound of his favorite artists wiping away any and all depressing thoughts he might have had, he found it much easier to think clearly about his predicament. He began to think about how he had got there, but no matter how deeply he searched through his, possibly non-existent, memory banks, he kept drawing up blanks. He couldn't remember anything. Even after giving the pages of his brain a few more scans, there was nothing of interest to see. Nothing about himself was evident, nothing except for the fact that he was here, in this place. But he knew that there was more then this. He knew about Earth, he knew about basic life, about the history of humanity, even about popular culture. Music, television, media, politics, all of that stuff that he didn't really care about anymore. But he didn't know his own name, or his own identity, or his parents, or his friends, or anything that might be pertinent to him in this lonely place. Curiosity was the feeling that was currently parading around his conscious mind, but, strangely, he was almost completely indifferent and uncaring about it. Truthfully, this apathy was quite possibly the thing that he was most inquisitive about at the present time. He had no answer to why he felt that way. Maybe it was because, not knowing of his life outside this realm, he didn't know whether or not he had anything to miss. Maybe his life was horrible and he had simply repressed it. Maybe it was too stressful, and he had entered this place to get away from it all. He feared waking up suppressed memories about himself, which would only make him feel worse, so he forced these inquiring words out of his mind and into the abyss around him. He convinced himself that it was better that he didn't know, and instead of fretting over a better life that may not even be real, he should accept what was happening. With that pseudo-happy, yet still fairly comforting, thought in mind, he went back to the simple pleasure of listening to his music, resigning himself to his new fate. Then his mp3 player went dead.

Quote: Bold is stuff you could change, with changes or suggestions in parentheses, or just stuff I took note of. Crossed out means to delete, obviously. ::::::::I drifted farther and farther into the deep darkness of the abyss. The darkness was seemingly never ending. (Sounds kind of awkward?) As I twisted and turned in space, contorting my body into shapes not physically possible within reality, I could see nothing but nothingness(the void) all around me. It would be very difficult to describe the sight. It wasn't as if I was blind. (Maybe combine, rearrange, or otherwise make these two sentences a bit more... concise? "It wasn't as if I was blind; it was just incredibly difficult to describe the sight before my eyes.") My ability to see was completely intact, perfect even, evident by my being able to look down (or is(was) it up) and see myself. I could see everything with picture perfect clarity, as if it were a bright and sunny day. There just wasn't anything at all for me to see. (A bit too much repetition of 'see'. Maybe change one of them?) ::::::::Many of the forces that existed on Earth were gone.(The first thing I thought was 'war? powers? nukes? XDD) I had absolutely no idea if there was any gravity, and the strangeness of nothing gave me no reason to lean towards either conclusion. The lack of wind resistance in this strange dimension was equally as off putting (doesn't that mean you don't like the place? I hadn't had any indication beforehand that you weren't enjoying it). It made it impossible to tell how fast I was falling, or if I was even falling at all. For all I knew, I could be floating upward s, or downward s, or sideward s, or I could (even) simply be suspended in mid nothing. ::::::::One of the queerest things about it was my attitude. Blatant indifference. It was kind of creepy that I could care nothing about my current predicament. The fear that had at first conquered my mind (it did? O.o I hadn't noticed) had since crawled back into the well of emotions from whence(I can't be certain, but I don't think those words are supposed to be used that way) it came, and no impressive (I think there might be a better word that that. 'overwhelming', maybe? intense?) feelings replaced it. No sadness at what I may have lost, no anger at getting stuck here. No, now my mind was overtaken by an extreme sense of boredom at the thought of floating/falling/hanging in this realm for the rest of eternity. (I'm not sure how, but this sentence gives me the 'showing, not telling' feeling... ish.) ::::::::I tried hopelessly to occupy my time with simplistic games. From playing rock, paper, scissors with myself to re-tying my shoe laces over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. In the end I felt , hard as it was for me to believe, (somewhat awkward placement?)even more bored: knowing I had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do was worse then simply thinking I had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do. (I like this. ;O) ::::::::I began to worry again, going back to that horrible, hopeless, helpless feeling that I had had when I first awoke in this place. Wanting to ease my mind as much as possible, I slipped my hands into my pockets, in an attempt to gain a position offering at least a bit more comfortability. (awkward sounding) Though it offered little, there was one good thing to come out of that minor movement. Imagine my surprise when my hand collided with a small something. ::::::::I pulled out the strange object, and it wasn't until I rested his eyes on it that I realized what it was. It was my mp3 player. I was overjoyed at the sight of it, and in my mind I quickly ran through samples of all of my favorite songs, all of which I now held in my outstretched hand. This excitement was swiftly and briefly eclipsed by a feeling of stupidity at having forgotten about this little piece of technological heaven. This shame didn't last long though, as it was soon pushed out of by mind by returned and rejuvenated euphoria. ::::::::I put the ear buds in and turned it on. I then allowed my body to relax and let myself to drift in the nothing, finding the feeling pleasurable now that I had something enjoyable to do. I was in this state for hours upon hours (which I could now gauge, simply adding up the lengths of all the songs I had listened to). With the sounds of my favorite artists wiping away any and all depressing thoughts I might have had, I found it much easier to think clearly about the circumstances I was in. I tried to think about how I had gotten there, but no matter how deeply I searched through my, possibly non-existent, memory banks, I kept drawing up blanks. ::::::::I couldn't remember anything. Even after giving the pages of my brain a few more cursory, and progressively more attentive, scans, there was nothing of interest to see. Nothing about myself was evident, nothing except for the fact that I was here, in this place. But I knew that there was much more then this. I knew about Earth, I knew about basic life, about the history of humanity, but I didn't know my own name, or my own identity, or my parents, or my friends. ::::::::Curiosity was the feeling that was currently occupying my conscious mind, but, strangely, I was almost completely indifferent and uncaring about it. Truthfully, much like before, this apathy was quite possibly the thing that I was most inquisitive about at the present time. I had no answer to why I felt that way. Maybe it was because, not knowing of my life outside this realm, I didn't know whether or not I had anything to miss. Maybe my life was horrible and I had simply repressed it. Maybe it was too stressful, and I had entered this place to get away from it all. What I feared most of all was waking up suppressed memories about myself, which would only make me feel worse, so I forced these inquiring words out of my mind and into the abyss. ::::::::I convinced myself that it was better that I didn't know, and instead of fretting over a better life that may not even be real, I should accept what was happening. With that pseudo-happy, yet still fairly comforting, thought in mind, I went back to the simple pleasure of listening to my music, resigning himself to my current fate. ::::::::Then my mp3 player went dead. Oh s**t~ XD Lessee, I found the story and your writing interesting overall. However, there are some places where you have awkward phrasing, or sort of unnecessary add-ons ('quite possibly', 'thought', repetition), that sometimes chop up the flow of your writing or interfere with reading. (I do this a lot too. >.> I like to go nuts with the extra words.) Occasionally, I have a vague sense of 'telling', rather than 'showing' in the story. For example, the parts when you find your mp3 player. I think it has something to do with the fact that you don't vary the beginnings of your sentences very muchl. "I thought...", "I pulled...", "I etc." Instead of say, "I put the ear buds in and turned it on," you could maybe use "Cradling my mp3 player, I put the ear buds in with my free hand and turned it on.

I enjoyed it, it has an oral telling feel to it right now rather than a piece someone would read, if that makes since. I agree with the suggestions made by Reianna

I agree with the other two. I don't think there's enough detail over all though (or perhaps it's just that the detail hasn't been used in a way that's right for this story), and it moves too fast for me.

Snap. Reinna beat me to a lot of the comments about the occasionally stilted phrasing. There are still a few things that I'd like to address, on that front.Quote: Curiosity was the feeling that was currently occupying my conscious mind but, strangely, I was almost completely indifferent and uncaring about it. This passage could be phrased more clearly. 'Curiousity' seems to contradict 'indifference,' so I don't really understand what you're trying to convey. Is the narrator recognizing that he would normally feel curious, but is actually indifferent? If so, how does that work if he doesn't remember the past? The modifiers 'strangely' and 'almost' don't do much for the sentence, I feel, and could be cut with no fallout.
'Indifferent' and 'uncaring' meant essentially the same thing. In a piece as short as this, repetition is really noticeable, so I suggest cutting one out.
I liked the tying shoes and rock-paper-scissors bit a lot. Sounds exactly like the sort of thing I'd do if I awoke in a void.Quote: What I feared most of all was waking up suppressed memories about myself, which would only make me feel worse, so I forced these inquiring words out of my mind and into the abyss. 'Suppressed is used closely to 'repressed,' and it feels... odd. The sentence seems overcomplicated. At the very least, I'd suggest breaking it into two sentences.
'Returned and rejuvenated euphoria' seems redundant. I suggest cutting 'returned.' If the euphoria is rejuvenated, then you don't need 'returned.'
It seems a bit odd that the narrator knows that these are his favorite songs, even though he doesn't remember his past. Couldn't it just be some random person's mp3 player instead? If I were in this situation, and I were so curious about my past, I'd use this as a clue towards my identity and try to infer something about myself from the player's contents. I know, I know, the whole thing is about the void and how he has nothing to occupy his mind, but this just seems to be a hole in the story.
Towards the end, I think you mean 'myself,' not 'himself'.
Overall, interesting idea, and nice ending. Your description tends towards telling rather than showing, and the narration seems a bit forced. I suggest you trim away at the redundant bits. You needn't state both that the narrator relaxes and that he lets himself drift along in the nothing.

Overall, it is a very good piece. The mood of the it comes across very well in your worrd choice ans sentence structure. Lending it a floating feeling of indiference and wonder at the same time. I myself had no issues with the show don't tell, that others have mentioned, but then I have always taken offence at that particular rule, for reasons I am unable to articulate at the current time. I do agree with Kyndall, that is is a bit odd that he would know that these are his favorite songs especially after this part: Quote: Nothing about myself was evident, nothing except for the fact that I was here, in this place. But I knew that there was much more then this. I knew about Earth, I knew about basic life, about the history of humanity, but I didn't know my own name, or my own identity, or my parents, or my friends. And I also noticed the switches between the him's and me's toward the end. Now this could be on purpose, but if it was not I would look into changing it. Overall a nice read, though I can't tell you where you got the title or what the reason was. Oh, and I decline to vote seeing as there is no option for 'ninja pirate'.

Ok a few suggestions:never ending = never-ending I could see nothing but nothingness all around me. – repetitive word “nothing” Quote: e-tying my shoe laces over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. I get what you’re trying to do with the repetition, but this is too much. It interrupts the flow for me. I like the line “turning the pages of my brain” =) But yeah in general I agree with the masses saying that the "telling" rather than "showing" thing makes it move kinda slow. Also, since the MC was so bored throughout the story, it made me feel bored reading it. Don't know how you could make boredom more interesting though... The title seems familiar to me somehow but I can't say how. (P.S. Frostys w/ french fries is on TV!)
