xd This cartoon was the first English adaptation of an anime series intended for young female audiences. It was also the first English adaptation of a "magical girl" (female character or characters using magic) anime.
According to some anime experts and industry statistics, this cartoon brought awareness to a larger and mainstream audience to anime which fueled the North American anime and manga industries. It also attracted a large number of females into anime, which for many years was exclusively a male hobby rolleyes
All transformations of the scouts have been edited to remove bodylines (breasts, etc). There are no Sailor Scouts, but Sailor Soldiers in the original version. mrgreen
The Sailor Says segments at the end of each episode did not exist in the original episodes, nor did the computer graphics that make the screens change [like the big tiara forming]. The Sailor Says segments were removed in seasons 4~five when a new dub, CWI, took control.

Episode 2.01 "The Return of Sailor Moon" starts the "Sailor Moon R" episodes.
Several episodes were removed when the series aired in America for various reasons. Among them were episodes 2, 5 (cut due to a scene where Usagi goes into a bar and gets into a car with a total stranger several years older than her), 6 (most likely cut due to a scene where Shingo kicks Luna), 20 (cut because it had no real relevance to the storyline of the series), 42 (cut because it specializes in the Sailor V back story, and the Sailor V manga is not known in America), 67 (cut both because it has no relevance to the story, and because the series creator hates it (most DVDs don't even have this episode)), 119 (cut due to nudity of the monster of the day, later aired with major edits to the monster), and 154 (cut because a possessed Makoto shakes her boobs and butt (later aired in an edited format.))
When Bandai was shopping around for American licensees for Sailor Moon, one prospective licensee, Toon Makers, created a pilot that combined live-action footage with CG and completely new cel animation. In this version, Luna was a white cat, the scouts were of mixed races (one girl was even wheelchair-bound), and the team flew through space on "space sailboards." A two-minute trailer for this version of Sailor Moon was shown at Anime Expo in 1995, and was met with scorn and derision from the fans present. The trailer, which was taped off the screen at the time and the footage since circulated on the Internet, has come to be known as "Saban Moon" by some fans, because of the mistaken belief that the Saban Company was involved in the making of the pilot. Although the pilot appears heavily influenced by "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" (1993) (including the word "morph" in the lyrics), Saban was not involved at all. In the end, Bandai decided to go with DiC as the licensee, simply because it was much cheaper for them to import, dub, and edit the series than for Toon Makers to produce all their filmed segments. One curious remnant of Toon Makers' involvement with Sailor Moon was the Moon Cycle toy sold by Bandai in the U.S. The toy came from an original Toon Makers design; the vehicle never appeared in the original Japanese series.
This is the only episode with just Sailor Moon and Sailor Mercury. Sailor Mars would join the team in the next episode (episode 1.06 "Time Bomb").

DEBUT: Chad Holden-Ford, a struggling musician in the North American dub whereas in the Japanese version, he is a poor man living on the streets before his arrival at the Cherry Hill Temple. The reason: When he saw Raye Hino there, it was love at first sight (episode 1.26 "Grandpa's Follies").
Chad Holden-Ford is not really homeless or a rock star but is rich (episode 1.26 "Grandpa's Follies").
DEBUT: Sailor Venus/Mina and Artemis, although technically, Sailor Venus/Mina/Sailor v was the first Sailor Scout discovered (episode 1.29 "Sailor V Makes the Scene)
When Artemis introduces her these are the only scenes with the original Sailor V. After this episode, Sailor V transforms into her Sailor Venus costume (episode 1.29 "Sailor V Makes the Scene).
The Original Spelling for Raye's name is Rei (episode 1.07 "An Uncharmed Life")
The Original spelling for Amy's name is Ami (episode 1.05 "Computer School Blues")
Mina's name in the Original is Minako
Lita's Name in the Original is Makoto (Her Friends call her Mako)
Serena uses to become the Luna Pen to become a superintendent; in the original, she becomes a nurse (episode 1.05 "Computer School Blues").
The 13 episodes of this series are collected into one VHS volume as "The Doom Tree Series". In some areas, this series was shown after the Dark NegaMoon series (episode 2.01 "The Return of Sailor Moon"). The DVD version places these correctly with the rest of Sailor Moon R.
In the English adaptation, DiC cut out the words "Make-Up" from the end of all transformation phrases, making it just "Moon Prism Power", for instance, instead of "Moon Prism Power Make-Up!"
Two episodes before this and after "Slim City" were skipped. The first one advanced the plot slightly, explaining how Luna became Serena's new pet. However, Sammy is afraid of cats. The episode was skipped because Sammy kicked Luna. Luna also tossed a cute animal over a fence (though the animal was evil). The second episode was skipped because Serena used the Luna Pen to turn into an adult, where she resembles a prostitute. She also used her new look to sneak into a bar, where she ordered a root beer not to mention getting in the car with a man, she just met.
One of the cut episodes (42 in the original Japanese order) includes a history of Minako's past as Sailor V. Mina is forced to confront her feelings of betrayal towards her friend Katarina, who 'stole' the man Minako was in love with when Kunzite (Malachite) uses Katarina as a youma to attack Minako.
The song that plays when Luna and Artemis are talking about the scouts and how they do not remember anything is called "A New Day" (episode 1.40 "Day of Destiny").
When Luna checks out the arcade and enter her password is, I love tuna fish and fieldmouse pudding. In the original, the password is: the rabbit of the Moon pounds rice. This password refers to Serena's Japanese name Usagi Tsukino, which means 'rabbit of the moon'. The Japanese have a legend about a rabbit in the moon that makes mochi (pounded rice) much like the European/American legend of the man in the moon. (episode 1.05 "Computer School Blues").
While many fans perceive an extreme difference between the "DiC" and "CWi" versions of Sailor Moon, all episodes were actually produced, translated and adapted by Cloverway Productions. Many of the same writers continued throughout the entire series.
In American versions, the Scouts' death and resurrection was edited out, along with a scene before that where the spirits of the Sailor Scouts tell Serena not to give up in fighting Queen Beryl (episode 1.40 "Day of Destiny").
In the original Sailor Moon is fighting Metallia, who possessed Queen Beryl's body (episode 1.40 "Day of Destiny").
Episode 1.40 "Day of Destiny" was a two-part episode that was edited greatly. All the scouts' deaths are cut. Some scenes appear in the opening credits and Sailor Moon Says.
When Anne storms out of Darien's apartment, it is because Jordan pees in her face, not that he throws up on her. During Sailor Moon Says you could see his scene (episode 2.07 "Much Ado About Baby Sitting").
In the original, Sailor Moon's attack was called "Moon Tiara Action", not "Moon Tiara Magic".
The reason Sailor Moon used 'Moon Tiara Vaporize' instead of the normal 'Moon Tiara Magic' was because, in one of the skipped episodes, Sailor Moon threw the tiara and the dust sprinkled down and healed hypnotised people. Since DiC skipped the episode, they changed the name of the attack temporarily (episode 1.04 "So You Want to Be a Superstar").
When Sailor Moon battled the hypnotised body builders, she was scared. In the dub, Luna gave Sailor Moon a lecture about being brave. In the original, Luna told Sailor Moon to destroy the gold rings to put them back to normal. In the dub, Luna reminded Sailor Moon about Miss Haruna when she ran away. In the original, Luna told Sailor Moon she might lose weight if she fights the body builders (episode 1.03 "Slim City").
A lunch scene where Serena turns down food is cut (episode 1.03 "Slim City").
In the original, Raye smacks Serena across the face after Serena cries over how she hated being a princess. This is edited out of American broadcasting, except for in the preview of the episode. Even the least observant cartoon viewer can tell that scene was cut because Raye goes over to Serena and then there is a jump to Serena bent over before Raye and sobbing (episode 1.31 "A Reluctant Princess"). Oddly, the preview at the beginning of the episode still shows the slap in full.
When the four girls are talking at school, the chubby girl and the freckled girl with arguing about appearance in the original, not boyfriends (episode 1.03 "Slim City").
Melvin fails to mention in the dub that the pictures of Miss Haruna are "before-and-after" photos (episode 1.03 "Slim City").
When Serena is taking a bath, DiC raised the water level to hide some minor cleavage (episode 1.03 "Slim City").
The conversation between Serena and Andrew when she faints into his arms is altered big time in the dub. Instead of Andrew offering Serena a big steak in her fantasy, he offered her "love energy" in the original. He also talked about bad grades in the original, not doctors (episode 1.03 "Slim City").
In the original, Jadeite mentioned Miss Haruna would die soon which was edited out (episode 1.03 "Slim City").
In the dub, at the end, Sammy messed with the scale to make Serena think she gained weight. However, in the original, Serena really did gain weight! (episode 1.03 "Slim City")
The big pink music notes that float from the jukebox when Serena and Molly are singing the 'Sailor Moon' theme did not exist in the original (episode 1.04 "So You Want to Be a Superstar").
When Serena sees the monster and runs away, a scene where she accidentally runs into the male restroom is cut (episode 1.04 "So You Want to Be a Superstar").
A scene of Serena clobbering Melvin with a streamer is cut, but it can still be scene in the "Sailor Says!" at the end of episode 1.04 "So You Want to Be a Superstar".
When said to have 100,000 points, the game screen shows only 6850 (episode 1.05 "Computer School Blues").
In the English version, Luna says that they can take the disk to a computer store and look at it. In the Japanese version, they go back to school and use the school's computer (episode 1.05 "Computer School Blues").
In Japan, they drive on the left side of the road. Some, but not all, of the bus scenes were flipped in this episode to make it look like a North American bus (episode 1.06 "Time Bomb").
Raye's skirt flips up when she does a spell on the Princess (scenes are usually cut when skirts are flipped, though they still show some) (episode 1.08 "Nightmare in Dreamland").
The title Nightmare in Dreamland is also used for the Kirby game for Game Boy Advance (episode 1.08 "Nightmare in Dreamland").
The car crash scene was also used in Sailor Moon: The Movie Promise of the Rose (episode 1.30 "A Crystal Clear Destiny").
This first and only episode where we see Tuxedo Mask transform, Sailor Moon-style (episode 1.30 "A Crystal Clear Destiny").
As of this episode, Toby Proctor took over as the voice actor for Darien (a.k.a. Tuxedo Mask). Toby would continue this role until episode 3.12, "Sibling Rivalry" (episode 1.12 "An Unnatural Phenomena").
Raye's Grandfather is really a dirty old man in the original version of the series and warned women to stay away from him (episode 1.26 "Grandpa's Follies").
When Grandpa is attacked the second time, Raye is seen in the tub. DiC did not edit it (episode 1.26 "Grandpa's Follies").
An episode was cut before episode 1.17 "An Animated Mess", in which Serena, Amy, Raye goes to the seaside for a holiday, and training, however the hotel turns out to have a ghost.
In the Japanese version, the Ice was aimed at Sailor Moon, but missed and hit Darien instead, this was edited. However, if you look closely you can see Sailor Moon in the path of the ice for a split second (episode 1.30 "A Crystal Clear Destiny")
In the English version, Raye says that she and Amy can flirt with the guys on board, but in the original, Raye says that some couples are bound to get into fights and break up and that they can pick up guys (episode 1.09 "Cruise Blues").
The scene where Serena is pushed off the balcony is reversed in the USA version so it looks like she is being rescued (episode 1.18 "Worth a Princess's Ransom").
Some scenes were cut, such as a scene of Serena kicking a door while acting like her favourite super-hero, Sailor V, and hurting herself.
Some of the scene where Serena's mother attacked her after seeing her bad grade was cut
In the original, Serena's school was called "Juuban High", not "Crossroads Junior High". The English name is thought to have come about because the symbol for the school looks like a crossroads.
The Sailor Soldiers live in Tokyo, Japan, in the district of Juuban. Juuban means "tenth"
Queen Beryl is talking to the "Negaforce", but in the original, this Negaforce is really a sleeping empress named Queen Metallia. In addition, in the original, it was the "Dark Kingdom", not the "Negaverse".
Instead of being just "monsters", they were called Youma in the original. However, youma simply means "monsters".
At the end of her transformation, Sailor Moon makes a V symbol over her eyes. This was originally Sailor V's pose
When Sailor Moon does the "In the name of the moon" speech, Sailor Moon makes the American Sign Language symbol for "I Love You" with her hands.
Mamoru means "protector" and Chi means Earth. Chiba Mamoru means Protector of [the] Earth. Each of the Sailors have their planet name in their last name. According to creator Naoko Takeuchi, Tuxedo Mask is the equivalent of Sailor Earth. The final two seasons involve this position in their plot lines.
Raye's Temple is actually called Hikawa Jinja in the original series, not Juuban Temple.
The original episode 2 in Japan was skipped because Melvin looks up the teacher's dress. Though this could have easily been edited out, DiC simply skipped the episode.
In the original, Raye's black birds are named Phobos and Deimos, but their names have not been mentioned in the English episodes. Phobos and Deimos are the names of the planet Mars' moons. They become Sailor Phobos and Sailor Deimos in the original manga.
Zoisite is referred to as a person for the first time, in episode 1.19 "Molly's Folly". Zoisite is male in the original version of the series.
Lita continues to wear the uniform for her old school because the uniforms at Crossroads Jr High arent big enough for her.
Zoisite and Malachite were both male homosexual lovers in the Japanese version. The American version made Zoisite a woman to edit this.
The symbol for Jupiter is a 4 type shape, it's not backwards, the scene wasn't flipped
The show premiered on 11 September 1995. At the time, some considered this significant as it was the day after Ami Mizuno's birthday.
In the original series, Amara and Michelle (Sailor Uranus and Neptune, respectively) were lesbian lovers. In the American version, they changed them to cousins. This caused more problems than it solved, though, because it was obvious that they were also lovers from the way they acted (including a long scene of them touching hands and looking lovingly into each others' eyes, animated with romantic, blurry watercolour-like drawings).
Queen Beryl's four lieutenants are named Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite, and Kunzite (Malachite in the English version), which are also the names of minerals from the beryl family.
According to an advertising promo, DiC originally planned to make the Sailor Soldier's English names Victoria, Blue, Dana, Sara, and Carrie rather than Serena, Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina.
The symbols on the transformation pens are actually very accurate to the actual symbols for the planets. The only change made is that the circles that make up these symbols were changed to hearts.
