I found the secret level of the first Spyro game quite bland, but it was quite the achievement to get it. The third Spyro game has one of the best secret levels at the end, in my humble opinion.

I never made it that far in the first game. If course I played it when I was younger as well, so I might be able to figure it out now if i were to replay the game to get to the secret level.

If I remember right, you couldn't go to Gnasty's treasure place (The secret level) without 100% completion of all the levels. Then, going through that level finishes off the game.
But, it has been an inordinately long time.

i beat the game once, and there was a pic of gnasty gnorc.
*secret level=gnasty's loot*
i still have the game 4 my psx
