The Green Day version.
I just want to know,
why does everyone hate it so much? I love Green Day balmost as much as the Beatles, and I think they did a great cover for the song. Some of you seemed really offended when it came out. DOn't forget, it's the thought that counts. It was to help Darfur. I mean, of course, they'll never be able to overcome John's greatness, and of course John's version kicked Green Day's a**, but Billie still did a great job. I really like the song. Wha are your opinions?

Well. I can speak for me in saying that personally I hate Green Day. I respect everyone's right to like who they like though. Hope I didn't offend you when I put that I hate Green Day.
I understand that they did it for Darfur, which is a good cause. So that's fine. I think most bands did it for the publicity of doing something good. It seems to me that a lot of bands now days are fake.

Personally I don't like the way they did it. I believe that you can get more feeling out of the song if it was acoustic. I don't like their electric version. Also, the original is almost always better. xd

GerardisMine I think they didn't make it well, and I hate Green Day. Yes, but remember, it was to raise money for a country who's children are starving, so it's the thought that counts. I'd think some you would like Green Day, just because of what they did. Not because of their music, because of their actions. They're really good guys. They were in New Orleans last year helping to rebuild homes, and now they're helping with the whole Darfur situation. Maybe you don't like their music, but you should at least appreciate the cause. :3

Just because it was for a good cause doesn't mean the song was good. They might as well do it right if they're going to do it at all.

The "cause" isn't even right, especially since, by 1980, John didn't like those "benefits" for the third-world countries, saying that most of the time the money raised (he donated quite a lot, and performed benefit concerts) did nothing to help, and if the country couldn't lift itself up after all those benefit concerts, after all that money was poured into them, it just wasn't going to happen. Ever. You could donate a billion, trillion dollars to some third-world country, and if they don't have the political and economic know-how to take that money and run with it, they will remain a third-world country. So the intentions were good, but not within the line of John's personal feelings.
Secondly, the way I figure it, the only reason they chose "Working Class Hero" was because it had the word "hero" in it. That song had absolutely nothing to do with helping third-world countries, or anyone else. It was a sardonic, bitter but heart-felt song about how John felt, how he was told was the "only way" to becoming someone of any worth, and how he was viewed by the people back home when he suddenly found himself to be revered and adored by millions. Nothing to do with actually being a hero, just being seen as a "hero" or "important" in a social sense of the word.
And last, "rocking" the song up just ruined it for me. John's version was emotional, personal, and wonderful - Green Day just seemed to run it through the "Instant 21st Century Sound!" generator and expected it to take off like a rocket, because that's what the kids today listen to and just covering the song in the original style simply wouldn't cut it. I know that, for covers, a band is supposed to "make it their own," but green day has done acoustic songs before, and I don't get why they didn't do it when it really counted.
I personally do not like Green Day - but that isn't saying much, considering that I don't like about 99% of the music today. I don't like their remake of the song because it wasn't done right - it wasn't the right song, it wasn't even the right artist - it's my personal belief that you don't touch John Lennon songs, especially not one that was so obviously personal to him. It's just the way I feel, and I react negatively to anyone who tries to cover John Lennon songs, regardless of whether or not I have a dislike towards the artist covering it.

Personally, I like both. John's more, of course, but I don't mind the version that Green Day did. Sure, the harshness of Green Day's version isn't desirable, but like I said, I don't mind. I can't get to the point of loathing.
So a band did a cover of a song. Big deal, right? They wanted to, they did. They raised money, good job. That's just me, though. wink
