Dare, of course, got Gorillaz to number one. Combined with Dirty Harry and Feel Good Inc., it got them to a stage where any music buff could recognise their name. However, it's inclusion on the Demon Days album continues to mystify me.
On the album, just to remind y'all, it's proceeded by 'All Alone' and 'White Light', and followed by 'Fire Coming Out Of The Monkey's Head'. The upbeat end of 'White Light' does lead semi-smoothly into 'Dare', but no way as smoothly as other sections of the album. And the end of 'Dare' doesn't exactly flow onto 'Fire Coming Out...'.
Topic wise... 'White Light' is about degenerating society and how they are unlikely to recover. 'Fire Coming Out of a Monkey's Head' is about how apathy can be just as dooming as destroying things yourself, as well as accusing the big industries of killing the earth and old cultures. 'Dare' is about turning up the volume in a booth. And something else that I really can't work out, because every time I try to decipher the lyrics I just get that it's about, well... sex. confused
Thus leaving me to consider why Danger Mouse (wait, he was the one who produced it, right?) included it on the album. It's just confusing me. I really can't see Gorillaz including something randomly on their big, spiritual album just because it would sell well.
Any help, anyone?
