Hold on now, hold on. Slow down the flame train. Let me impart a little wisedom, alot of people don't like to think alot when they listen to music.Let me explain. See, I have this friend who loves everything about Rush except the lyrics. I said, "Why do you not like the lyrics? Are they lyrics not profound and justified?". He looked at me and said, "It's because they're profound and justified." I guess alot of people just think that way. I think it's sad, personally.

But you can't call someone a bad lyricist because you don't like that they're too good. That's just stupid.
I liked their reasoning. Apparently, they don't like his lyrics because he's too well-read and he's a drummer:
"Drummers are good at many things: exploding, drowning in their own vomit, drumming. But the Rush skinsman proved they should never write lyrics—or read books. Peart opuses like “Cygnus X-1” are richly awful tapestries of fantasy and science fiction, steeped in an eighth-grade understanding of Western philosophy. 2112, Rush’s 1976 concept album based on individualist thinker Ayn Rand’s novella Anthem, remains an awe-inspiring low point in the sordid relationship between rock and ideas. Worst lyric: “I stand atop a spiral stair/An oracle confronts me there/He leads me on light years away/Through astral nights, galactic days” (“Oracle: The Dream”)"
I thought "Syrinx" was awfully clever, personally...I couldn't see an eighth grader doing it...I mean, it's a very obscure double entendre. It's almost Joycean in a way.
And then they criticize him for writing about Dragons and such instead of maintaining the generic statis quo of only writing love songs. Ironically, the only song I can think of that Peart wrote that used the word "dragons" was, you guessed it, one of the few love songs he wrote in his career (Madrigal).

Lethkhar But you can't call someone a bad lyricist because you don't like that they're too good. That's just stupid. Quote: I agree completelly, just giving my theory. Remember though, just because it's stupid doesn't mean people won't do it. 1 in 5 americans can't find America on the map, think about it ( xp ).

How can you call 2112 a "low point"? I mean, it was one of the greatest rock albums ever. Even questioning that is total idiocy.

Neil Peart, worst lyricist ever? It was Neil Peart that SAVED Rush.
If it hadn't been for Neil, Geddy and I'd have died out a long time ago.

To slander Neil is to slander Mike Portnoy, drummer and lyricist of Dream Theater.
To slander Mike Portnoy is to get me very ******** pissed.

There's absolutely nothing that can support such a self-righteous claim! Neil is looked upon by hundred of millions (if I had to guess) for his progressive intuition for melding drum melodies and a mind for the lyrical voice of RUSH. The man had said more in a single song back in 1975 then most artists do in their entire careers today, winning about lost love, and cheating girlfriends so on and so forth. Neil attacks what he beleives builds us a humans with immensly deep, philosophical lyrics. Though not abosolutely the best drummer in the world (as he might very well argue) he brings out the fire and steady intensity of the instrument in order to push the music his mates, Alex and Geddy work hard to write. I'm blabbing I know, but my point is you can't attempt to bring down a man that has changed the way lyrics have been written and understood! Especially one that has almost developed his own way of presenting a message via words! It simply can not be done. However, on a brighter note to all the Neil fans out here... Neils been working on a new surprise for us! IF you liked his words in his ROADSHOW book then you'll love the images he presents in "the Roadshow Illustrated Companion". Let's hope his pictures are worth as many words as his thoughts are!! Just visit the Official Website of Neil Peart and keep and eye out for the Ad on the right site of the home page! Kepp it up RUSH fans!!
