The Dark and Twisted CAL/KAL will begin tonight at midnight!
Rules:
1. Your project must be started and finished during the month of January 2008.
2. You may knit or crochet, both are accepted so use whatever you are comfortable with.
3. You may make anything you want as long as it fits with the theme. The theme is subject to your own artistic interpretation.
4. Pictures are not required to participate but they are appreciated. We love to see your work! But if you don't have a camera don't let that stop you from playing along.

*kicks self for neglecting guilds during Christmas week*
Ooo, exciting! I'm going to need to pull out my patterns and decide on a 'dark and twisted' kind of project.
One project I plan on doing sometime soon is a crocheted Kappa, like my beloved Gaia plush. But I should be able to do another one along with it, especially now that Christmas is over.

I started mine last night, it's a variation of Strawbeary from Elizabeth Doherty's book Amigurumi! Super Happy Crochet Cute. Strawbeary is the one on the right on the cover. I can't work on it anymore until I get to the craft store though, I ran out of some things. crying

Ooo, Strawbeary. I have the same book and have been meaning to make one of the humanoids. I started one a while back, but it ended up looking a little wonky because I was messing with the details a little too much.

I never take the time to make gauge swatches and usually it doesn't matter because I don't make wearables that often... but I think I messed up royally on Strawbeary's head, lol. I'm probably going to have to redo it. Oh well.

I've had the flu for a week so I was a little confused but after looking at the pattern again it appears that I did not mess up Strawbeary's head, she's just going to be bigger than intended. The pattern calls for an E hook and I am using a G because my E is very flimsy and I don't like using it.
So... I went to the craft store and picked up the rest of the stuff I needed and hopefully I can get back to work on her today. I'll go ahead and ruin the surprise, I was going to make an amputee amigurumi for the dark and twisted theme. I had a dream one night that I was a double amputee and couldn't think of anything else to fit the theme. But now I think A) amputees aren't really all that dark and twisted and B) I like how she's turning out so I may just finish her whole and as intended and come up with something else dark and twisted. Hmmm...
How is everyone else doing on their projects?

Ugh, I haven't even started my project... Just when I think things are starting to slow down in the way of things that need done, with the holidays over and all, my grandma passes away... >__< It wasn't really that much of a surprise (she's been having health issues for a while now), and I'm glad that she went peacefully instead of the alternative, which was having her hang on with life-support and feeding tubes and all of that unpleasantness.
I do plan to do a project, since I do need something to keep my hands busy. And it feels like forever since I've crocheted anything from beginning to end...
That gauge stuff drives me nuts most of the time. It seems like whenever I try to do something with the correct-sized hook, I (of course) don't even have that sized hook. Last time I went to Jo-Ann's, I thought I alleviated that problem by buying like 4 different sized hooks, all of them ones that I thought I needed. I'm covered for amigurumi projects, but now I'm kind of screwed if I want to make more normal things, like hats or armwarmers because I don't have very many large hooks. X3
An amputee could look pretty twisted... but the whole humanoid pattern is pretty sweet looking. I think someday I'm going to do my Gaia avatar with Doherty's pattern as a base...

Awww, I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother.
I actually thought about doing my avi too, maybe we should start a thread for that. Not a CAL/KAL because it would probably take forever but it would be fun to do.

A textiles avi art thread would be fun. ^ ^
So many of the accessories and clothes on Gaia I am so envious of and they would all look really cute as dolls. A while ago I even thought of making a plushie (non-crochet) that would be undressable so I could keep it up to date with my Gaia avi. X3 Pretty dorky, but I still like the idea. It might work better as an amigurumi figure anyways... I'm better at getting shapes for dolls looking right with yarn instead of making sewing patterns...
...and I still haven't figured out something for my dark and twisted project... I might just end up making a bunch of small things... like a pile of eyeballs... with nerve endings still attached... like these here Craftsanity - eyeballs (warning: PDF file). X3

Eyeballs would be awesome! I am also having a hard time coming up with something for the theme. I've scrapped the amputee idea cause I want to make the whole doll. I did make something a little twisted today though... once I sew the mouth on I will post some pictures. I think it will count toward the theme but I'd still like to do something else as well. I wish I could make blood like Patricia Waller - here is some inspiration for you. The conjoined twins would be good. I have the perfect color yarn to make my avi with my silver skin, only problem is I usually wear the midori cache set with the silver skin and I'm not sure I could crochet the midori cache pants! lol Maybe I could. I also want to crochet an ami of one of the characters from Battlestar Galactica... so many projects to do!

Yeah, crocheting the clothes could be tough. I might skip out on that and actually sew the clothes for any upcoming dolls. Sewing clothes is one of the things I can sew. Better than I could crochet them, anyways.
I totally forgot about Patricia Waller's grim works! Perfect place to draw ideas from! That roadkill kitty makes me sad. lol. (I would go insane doing that many single crochets that all of her creations seem to consist of).
Depending on how large the finished eyeballs are, I might try and integrate them to something I've been wanting to crochet for a while - 4 to 6 netted, reusable grocery sacks... it could look pretty awesome if I made the sacks out of red and then attached some eyeballs to it... like they're hanging onto sinew and guts... *is grossed out by own idea*

Eeeeeewwwwwwww!!! That would be awesome! What a great idea! Here is a picture of my progress on Strawbeary. I haven't tacked down the wig or eye patches yet and I hope to start the body tomorrow. And here is a picture of my not so dark but still kind of twisted amigurumi d***o! LOL Don't ask...
