Long black legs disappeared as the stag walked on, the snow high and deep even for the matured deer. Steam rose from his dark muzzle as he continued through the dead forest. And even though his surroundings were bare, and the air nippy...it was oddly serene. Alaneir shook his strong neck and flicked his ears of fallen snow. Yes, today was a pleasant day. Standing still for a moment, the male reached down, nipping on a meager and frostbitten meal. Every so often he'd glance about, only to find nothing of threat, and continued eating.

(oh, and Alaneir is a rogue) ^__^

A small brown hind was wandering in the forest. Her soft maroon eyes were searching for morsels in the frosty landscape. Of course, the wood was plentiful with at least a berry or two year round, and it wasn't hard for her forage. The tall, wirey trees arced majestically above her, but she could feel their drooping frozen sadness. This time of year, the usually graceful trees had not even a single leaf on their branches, though the ground at their base was still littered with autumn's acorns.

Jamila was rummaging for just such acorns when she heard a crack in the underbrush. Immeadiately alert, she tensed, ears twitching to and fro. Then she spied the silvery stag, whose antlers mimiced his surroundings.

She sighed with relief, but remained alert. It was just another deer, but he was unfamiliar and smelled like a rouge.

Patrol duty was on again. The deer with the swirling cloud pattern on his neck heaved a huge sigh. He hated patrol duty. Nothing ever happened. He was too young to be forced to do this. His rust colored hooves sank into the freezing snow vanishing from view. Icy frost clung tightly to his similar colored antlers. His bright blue eyes scanned his surroundings.

A little chocolate mocha female caught his attention. He had seen her before, but never talked to her. He puffed out his flamed chest and trotted up to her. Then he saw the male. He had a strange scent to him. It wasn't of his herd. "A rogue!" Engill gasped. He lowered his head and pawed at the ground. Rogues can be dangerous. "Who are you sir?" boomed the stag proudly. Finally, some excitement.

His breath stifled and Alaneir raised his neck to dtare in the direction of the new scent. A hind out here? Olive-hued eyes were piercing as he silently observed the other. As far as he was aware, he wasn't in a herd's territory. A scent would have alerted him to tresspassing. If anything, the stag was curious why this femme was out in the open alone. She wasn't a rogue, was she?

A silver ear twisted and the male turned his head to the side. Alaneir smelt the other before he saw him, and his outburst made the rogue adjust his stance. Nothing threatening, just a cautionary and ready pose. He tossed his antlers with a short chuckle. Full if energy, this tan scout was. "I go by Alaneir. And who would you two be?"

((Her eyes are maroon, btw. I changed the font color so it would be less confusing, and it fits better anyways. :]))

The hind tensed at the sudden flurry of voices. She hadn't noticed her herd's stag patrolling, though it came as no surprise to her, but was still slightly shocked at the rouge's random appearance. It had been an ordinary day so far, then suddenly these two males showed up. This could get interesting fast.

She nodded respectfully to the rusty stag, but decided to speak up first. She was at a closer proximity to the rouge, after all. "I am Jamila, hind of the Firebringers," she responded boldly. The mocha deer was small for her age, and sometimes twitchy (as hinds usually are), but wasn't in the least bit shy.

"Rouge," she accused under her breath so he couldn't hear. Her pride would make her deny it, but she had never actually met a rouge before and truthfully was a tad fearful. He had a handsome, intimidating rack, and lively silver eyes. Suddenly she felt quite glad she had a stag on her side with her.

While the other hinds scraped at the snow in search of the dieing grass beneath, Maysa had wandered into the forest for something more substantial. It was so quiet here beneath the trees and so surreal. Frost clung to the limbs of the trees, sparkling in whatever small amount of light managed to break through the grey snow-heavy clouds.

The brown hind was nosing at the ground when there was a loud cry. Head jerking up, Maysa took a few steps back, instantly on alert. While her first instinct demanded that she run, there didn’t seem to be any immediate danger. After a moment of thought she moved towards the noise, listening instantly and her nose constantly searching for a telling scent.

When she heard the murmur of Herla voices and caught their scent, she relaxed. Maysa stepped around a tree and caught sight of the three deer; two stags and one hind. One of the stags was familiar, Engill, and she gave him a quick smile.

“Is everything… alright?” Concerned green eyes looked around the group, her voice low and uncertain.

"Well met Alaneir," Engill admitted, "I am Engill, an Outrider for te herd." He bowed his antlers slightly. His sky colored eyes blazed. Rogues were rogues for reasons. It made Engill sick just to think of what some of those reasons might be.

A different brown hind caught Engill's attention from the corner of his eye. The sight of her made is heart skip a beat and flutter wildly in his chest. "Maysa," he breathed. It was the stroyteller-to-be from before. This close together, Maysa and Jamila looked related.

Changing the subject within his mind, Engill looked back to the opposite male. "What are you doing here?" he asked rather than demanded. He didn't like being mean, but he didn't like rogues a bit more. He was willing not to judge though.

One ear flicked as Alaneir stayed steady, staring at the pair before him. So both were of this Firebringer herd? He thought he could recognize the faint scent of that widely known herd. Brows quirked, and the stag tilted his head to give a quizzical glance to the short female. Now what was she muttering so boldly about? Still, he gave a nod of a short bow. "Jamila."

His soft muzzle turned up in a smile as he looked back to the other stag. "Engill. A strong name." White steam escaped his nostrils into the chilly air as he adjusted his stance. If he kept his black legs still too long, he risked freezing them. Silver eyes blinked and Alaneir turned his gaze to the side. There, just beside a nearby tree stood another Firebringer. Just how far did the herd members skirt their borders? She too received a faint nod, before Engill called his attention once more. And rather than answer him with words, Alaneir turned and waltzed off to the side. His long limbs recovered and dipped into the snow, showing his slivers of stripes as he came upon a dried tree. "This line of trees," and the stag raised a single pale hoof, scrapping and kicking aside a pile of snow, "provides useful foraging." The rogue stepped back, revealing the tiny, frozen but vibrant red berries at the foot of the tree.

Jamila narrowed her eyes enviously. "I was just about to browse that tree," she remarked plainly. He seemed nice enough, but was quite short on his manners. As an intruder on another herd's lands, he ought to show some respect. She kept expecting Engill to do something, but he just stood there. Stags, she thought, rolling her eyes. All buck and no brain. The mocha hind was indeed arrogant, and perhaps a bit of a tomboy. But at least she knew her place in the herd and didn't comment further.

Out of the corner of her eye, Jamila spied another rusty pelt. The hind had swirls of silver and striking green eyes. She recognised Maysa, whom she had seen in the herd but never really spoke to. "Quite a gathering we're forming, aren't we?" she mused aloud, a sarcastic smile splitting her small face.

Maysa regarded the other hind for a moment before smiling. “Jamila, yes?” It had taken her a little time recognize the other, since they probably hadn’t said more than two words to each other, even living in the same herd.

Ears flickering forward she watched the unknown male for a moment, completely relaxed. It seemed that maybe she had wandered a little further from home than she had realized. Maysa nearly sighed. She really needed to learn how to pay attention to where she was going.

By the way Engill was reacting to the other stag, perhaps he was a stranger. In other words… a rogue. Maysa wasn’t worried, if that were indeed the case. After all, she had met another rogue before, and he had been charming.

“My name is Maysa.” She informed Alaneir, just to be polite. “A pleasure to meet you.”

"I thank you for the comment of my name," Engill stated with another bow of his head. Maysa trusted the rogue, so Engill figured so could he. All this male wanted to do was browse, right?

"I shall aloow you to take your fill, but with me watching your movements. You are too close to the herd for me to take lightly," Engill sighed with a shake of his tall antlers. He found that to be the right course of action. The brush was half ina dn half out of the herd territory, so what harm could it do to let the male eat? Engill didn't want him to die of hunger bacuse of him. He was too soft. What the stranger didn't know was that Engill meant angel in some human language. He cast Maysa a quick glance to see if she approved. Jamila was already a bit disapproving, as Engill could feel.

Alaneir blinked before allowing a light laugh from his muzzle. My my, someone didn't take well to outsiders at all. But such a temper could get her into trouble if she didn't take care to it. Silver ears flitted to the newest voice, and the stag turned his attention back to the other hind. With so many tan and brown deer, Alaneir had no clue who was related to who in this herd. An unusual fact that he wasn't often bothered with, being a rogue. "Pleasure to meet you as well. All of you." He waved his antlers in the general direction of all three Firebringers.

The male went quiet for a moment, faint surprise in his eyes to the Outriders words. He had forgotten the policies of being in a herd. Where taking care of number one didn't necessariliy mean yourself. "No, but thank you for such consideration." Hooves backtread in the snow until Alaneir was far from the tree, turning around to find another. "There are ladies present, best let them have their fill." For all he knew, they had young to care for. He on the other hand could afford one skipped snack. The stag nosed the snow softly, treading near the base of another tree some feet away. His attention was driven politely away from the others, not wanting to bother them with his stranger presence. A hoof rose and began chiseling into the snow, hoping to find more hints of red.

Jamila snorted, and trotted up to the tree where the rouge stood moments before, and began to browse stubbornly. The hind had never been claimed by any stag, though she was almost three, so thus had no calves to feed. But she still ate. She couldn't bring herself to look back at Maysa, as a small twinge of guilt rose in her throat. Jamila quickly surpressed it.

Jamila had a small stature, but a big attitude. In the back of her mind, she thought this might be why she was so lonely. She had few friends among the hinds and usually didn't associate with stags, as she often accidentally insulted them in some way the second she met. Already she knew she had offended Alaneir, and felt the guilt of beginning to insult the Outrider. Jamila, you're hopeless, she teased herself.

Maysa smiled at Engill, happy at the decision he had made. There was no need for the rogue to be driven away, especially during winter, when things were difficult for all of them.

“Oh, thank you.” The young hind stared at the pretty red berries, but decided to hang back. It really wasn’t her meal to eat. It was only when Jamila was stubbornly eating her fill that Maysa stepped forward, taking a few bites and feeling a twinge of guilt.

Engill stood by and watched as the trio ate. He loved berries, but his all-time-can't-resist favorite were the strawberries from the springtime feast. The fur around his mouth used to be white, his mother had told him when he was in the corps, but it turned red due to all the strawberry juice that had dripped down his face.

He walked lightly to the stag and nudged him a bit to the right. "A patch lies under the snow by that fir," he stated with a point of his muzzle. He had a sharp nose for berries and the sweetly tart scent was strong where the females were and under that tree. He took a place at the dead center of the clearing.
