Abilities/Powers
Abilities are something you're going to hear of a lot, so it's good to get an understanding of them right away. Abilities is the category that all traits fall into that aren't classified as skills, such as Armored Skin, Super Strength, and Flight. There are 2 different levels of Abilities:
1- Enhanced (The very limit of human capaiblity and beyond)
2- Superior (Far beyond human capacity)
Rather then taking on an additional Ability (if you have that option) you can instead, increase the quality of an existing ability.
(So if you're a human who's unique trait is Cybernetically Enhanced, you can choose to have Enhanced Strength, armored Skin and Enhanced Agility. Or you could take Superior Strength and Armored Skin instead.)
Skills/Talents
Skills and Talents work exactly like Abilities/Powers. By putting a "skill point" into a skill you have it at the Normal level. If you put another point into a skill rather then taking a new one it becomes "enhanced" and by putting a 3rd point into the skill it becomes "superior."
Keep in mind, that although these are factors in determining the outcome of a scene, it isn't the deciding factor.
"So what does this have to do with Rping, or character creation?"
- Well, when Rping, it assists the understanding who's superior in a certain situation. If an Rp is being moderated, the Moderator can assist in determining the balances of these abilties (like a game master etc.).
"What's the deal with equipment?"
-Equipment can be just as powerful as a trait, by using Trait bonuses towards equipment you can attain the same means. For example, if you chose to put one trait into your Armor, it'd have the effectiveness of Armored Skin (rather then reinforced). Spend another trait on a gun and you'd have an Enhanced Rifle (perhaps it's armor piercing or explosive rounds etc.
"Is all of this really necessary?"
- No, it's not. Hence if you dont' want to put much thought into it and just make a character, just do the basics and if you get burned by someone to took the time to make a character, life happens.
