Are people naturally good or naturally evil? Are they neither? Why do people do the things they do? Are we all just out to satisfy ourselves, or are conditioned to be this way?

Post your thoughts and let the conversation begin.

I think evil is acquired. According to Piaget, it takes a bit in order of us to understand cause and effect (i.e. if I hit this person, they will feel pain). I have yet to see an evil baby who deliberately inflicts pain.

I remember when I was little I invented a game called "slave and master" in which I was the master. Problem was, though I understood that being subjugated was bad at some level, I didn't understand many other evils of human nature. The only slave was the one black girl in school! I got a lecture on racism, but it was the first time I had ever heard it before. I was not intentionally being racist. Therefore, adults teach you many evils that children would otherwise not be able to comprehend or think of.

I think a person has the free will to decide whether they are good or evil, it just depends if that person has a strong sense of free will. Those who are easily lead by others are more easily influenced by evil.

What if all they have ever known is suffering?

I think those that have only known suffering, can either have the defenses weakened or strengthed to evil, I think it just depends on the person, some allow pain to consume them where others try to fight back against it and become a stronger person.

People are naturally good, and try to do good, but no one is completely good, just like no one is completely bad. Sometimes that other side shines through strnger than others. It is human nature to collect and attempt to gain power.

"Greatness inspires envy, envy engenders spite, and spite spawns lies."

It's been that way for a long time, and until you knock some sense into them, they probably won't change. It's been bred into people, as well as taught to them from a young age, that they should strive to become more powerful han others and makes theirs lives more luxurious.

In my opinion people start off good, but people that are around them can decide if they stay on that path. But even with good influence people can want to be different and that can lead to evil. Life is all about choices in my opinion.

Neither. The words "good" and "evil" only describe aspects of humanity. Without humanity they loose all meaning. So all of humanity can't be one or the other. Does that make any sense?

to me the ideal of good and evil is as trivial as the dilema of the cup that is half full/empty xp

Then what do you find that isn't trivial?
