Ahem, well, Mel, being the Enlightment thinker that I am, I would be more than pleased to entreat you to the great story of Tally Youngblood, in a nutshell, of course.
Many thousand years from now, the world has greatly changed. There is no longer an "oil crisis", persay, since there is no more oil. There is also no more of a "population crisis" or a "world hunger crisis", since the population had dwindled so drastically at one point that we almost became extinct. We are Rusties, named for the remains of our once beautiful steel cities.
Until a child's sixteenth birthday, they are how they are born: Ugly. But that's alright, because once you hit sixteen, you recieve a surgery to become Pretty; they can change your eyes, your skin, your bones. You live in Prettytown, partying everynight, never having to worry about school, or jobs, or parents, until you grow up.
Tally is excited for her own sixteenth birthday, that is until she meets Shay, a girl who wants to stay Ugly. When Shay runs away to join the Smoke, a group who lives in the wilderness and avoids becoming Pretty (for good reason), Tally is forced to chase after her and betray the Smoke, or she will live as an Ugly forever.
It's a trilogy with four books (lol!) Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras.

I know the library near me has it, so you can check at your local one if you have a card. I don't like using library's myself, since the books are often written-in and dog-earred. Plus, the pages of library books smell funny.

OMG!! i got this series for christmas this year...only i don't have the fourth one. I read uglies, and I loved the Tally in it so much that I'm really not sure I want to read the other two...I was bad...I skimmed some of the other two books and kindof read the endings...and it just bothers me how changed she becomes... Idk...one of these days i will actually sit down and read the other two [and then find the last one and read it too] but right now I want to cherish the Ugly Tally Youngblood. the one who falls in love with David...he seems so sweet and well, I bet we would consider him cute, even if they don't.

I read all four books in one-sitting, taking me three nights to complete.
Tally-wa is one of those flawed characters you can't help but adore, yet want to slap acorss the face when the answer is so obvious or the mistake she made seems to trivial to the point to asking why in the hell is she crying over it in the first place.
Shay-la scares me. Plain and simple. She's one of those characters that usually either dies off in the first ten minutes of a movie, or becomes the twisted mass-murderer near the end. It was rather happy-making to find she hadn't lost her odd...yet slightly entertaining humor in the fourth book.
The fourth book in question has very few compliments from me. Though, the idea of everyone being able to be what they want without the Mind-Rain seems pretty cool, but the whole Popularity thing is what has me irked. If I had to choose, I'd probably be a Tech-head or a Pixel-Skin.
But if the Bubblehead surge was still in effect from Tally's days, I'd probably end up being a Special.
"I don't want to hurt you, but I will if I have to..."
Famous quote right there.
The only thing that really got me going about the fourth book was the fact it was starred in Japan, which is my home country. I like this one quote:
"So you want me, a person who can't lie, to lie about the fact...that I can't lie?"
Funny as H right there.
Hm, and the fourth book, things seemed kind of.... I don't know... They seemed kind of expectant. Like you could guess what would happen next and be totally right.
Heh, the ending with David and Tally cracked me up pretty good. It was a good ending for the two.
Though, poor Zane-la. Guy never had a chance the second he laid eyes on Tally-wa. Not that it's all her fault. Dr. Cable really messed it up for those two. Even David's mom I'm mad at. The two wenches should just keep their big ideas to themselves sometimes.
All right, I think I'm rambling. Heh. Well, I just wanted to say I enjoyed these books very much.

... I heart you... so much right now *runs off to join guild in xXBlind_No_MoreXx's banner* a-hem, now that I'm back...
Those of you who have yet to read Uglies (God knows why not) notice the beautiful use of Ugly slang in her post... -la and -wa behind approprete names... nouns with -making at the end to allow it to become an adjective... truly an ugly conisuer...
