I have now created a new saying, thanks to you guys, and to the girl who posted the thread about the inside looking out. 3nodding So credit to her. heart Sorry I can't remember your screen-name.

"Why don't we just let go and lose control? We lost it a long time ago."

What do you guys think about it? Do you believe it to be true?

Hmm.. have we lost it?
Or did we ever have it?
it depends on whether your talking about chaos theory or spacial relationships

Love the saying biggrin

I don't think anyone truly has control over their own lives, I think free will is like an illusion. If someone else hits you you either hit them back or try to get away, its an instinct, it depends on the type of person. You dont stand there after being hit and think "hmm shall i hit him back or shall i run" you do it so quickly you dont really think about it. I think people try to gain control over their lives by controlling those around them.

I believe that people do have control over their own lives, it's just that a single action has such a huge effect on everything else, so there's so much being affected at once it seems like chaos.
Think of your action as a wave. If everyone is making actions, then there will be lots of waves, right? So in order to FEEL as if one has control, one has to step back and take a look at the pattern of the waves, and do one's best to soothe the other wave makers or study the patterns of their waves, so one can make one's own wave without it being cancelled out by another.

As for the hitting example, I don't believe that's the case. Although the instinct to fight or run is there, people do have the ability to make rational decisions in a moment's notice. One may start to pull back their arm to hit another, but they can always stop themselves before they make contact. Also, people can modify and shape their behaviour so that such instincts are curbed a bit. If one's nature is to hit back when one is hit, then one simply needs to practice controlling that urge. Eventually the urge to hit another back will be controllable, if not altogether gone.

And it's true, all people want is power and control. But think about it. Isn't the ability to make another person happy power? Therefore, isn't it possible to gain a feeling of control simply by making other people feel good? People aren't bad, they're just confused.

If you're looking at the whole nature vs. nurture argument, you could say part of what we do is based on our free will, but part is just natural instincts that we really can't control. So I do agree with the saying, we really don't have much control over anything, and we should accept that.
