Do you dislike GLBTQ people who you consider stereotypical?
  Yeah - I can't stand them!
  Doesn't bother me
I really identify with them because I fit certain stereotypes

First, hi to everyone. I'm fairly new around here... anyway...

I just want to see how many of you dislike GLBTQ people who dress in a way that you consider stereotypical. Examples of this could include feminine gay men or masculine lesbians.

I've seen several threads on the main forums (ED mostly) where people within our GLBTQ community have made disparaging remarks about such people. I find that really troubling since I really think we need to support one another and not be judgemental. I am what would be considered a stereotypical lesbian and I often feel hurt by comments by other GLBTQ people about how people like me need to look more heterosexual. I don't dress the way I do for anyone other than myself. I don't do it to make a point or a political statement... I just want to feel comfortable in my own skin. Surely we can all respect the desire to be true to ourselves.

If you dislike people that you consider to fit certain stereotypes, maybe you can tell us why you feel the way you do (in a respectful way please). If you've felt hurt by others who have judged you for the way you look, you could share that to. Maybe I'm not alone in feeling that it hurts worse to be rejected by someone in the GLBTQ community than someone in the general heterosexual population.

Personally, the only reason I dislike stereotypes is simply because I'm tired of being pinned as "the gay guy." So of course, I must have impeccable fashion sense and rainbow hair, with a dash of Cher as well. I'm actually a normal guy, who loves action movies, and soccer. I love tackle football (regardless of the gayness) simply because it's fun. I'm a male, who likes males, who act like men. I still love the feminine gay guys, I just wish it wasn't the stereotype.

The way I see it, there are a bunch of people out there who whether or not they realize it, become the stereotype. Knowing of the difficulties of being gay they start becoming the stereotype as means of 'Fitting in' then when they are placed in a situation where they are more relaxed this behavior backs off, and they act more like themselves. This whole process may or may not be conscious. But as in any situation, when stereotypes begin to be overstressed, whether this was done on purpose or not, people begin to see them as justified, and that brings negative attention to the community.
