So the other day my mother and I were discussing Phantom of the Opera and it's fanfiction when suddenly she perks up and says, "Do you remember that Phantom novel Deception? I found it on fanfiction.net!"
I was shocked. In all honesty, there's only one story I've managed to find on ff.net that I think is worth publishing- or rather, would be if the author got past chapter two. But thats another subject.
So, the point of this topic: whats your views on published fanfiction? I'm defining published fanfiction as novels written off of something else. So all those Star Wars books? Fanfiction. The Phantom of the Opera novels? Fanfiction.
Also, has anyone read anything they think might be publishable? What about fanfiction that should never have been published?

Really? That's interesting.
I've found a few that I would actually pay money for a book if it ever came out, but not as many as one would think. About 1% of all the fanfiction I've read. And I've even found a few that are actually better than the books they're based on.
There's this one Harry Potter fanfiction (I can't recall the name of it) that I prefer over Deathly Hallows. It's slash and has a heavy amount of sex scenes, but it's overall better.
Let's see, I've stumbled upon more than a few that should've never seen the light of day. And there are more than a few fandoms that one should be wary of. Naruto, Beyblade and Pokemon are all notorious for producing such fanfiction. (No offense meant to any of you who write in these fandoms.)

I didn't know fanfiction could be published! Wow. You learn something new every day, I suppose.
Anyways, there are several Kingdom Hearts fanfictions that I have read that I believe would make wonderful novels! Particularly one... which I suddenly can't remember the name of. Even though it's AU, it is so amazing that it absolutely deserves to be a novel.
Also, I have seen a whole bunch of Naruto and Kingdom Hearts fanfiction that should never have been written. And some Harry Potter. There is some pretty horrible Harry Potter fanfiction out there.

I think every fandom has publish worth fanfics and fanfics that make you feel like you have lost IQ points by trying to read them.
I read mostly Naruto stuff and I have seen a bunch of stories with excellent plots but weak characters. I have read a few that (with serious spelling and grammar editing) may be good enough to be published. My friend has read Hameron fanfics that she says are good enough to be published. Some people have even told me that I should publish one of mine. I'm really proud of that.

I really wish people could publish fanfiction. Namely, anime fanfiction. Not because I'm a total anime nerd (though I undoubtedly am), but because thats the fanfiction that really has no chance what-so-ever of being published. It'd be cool if Shonen Jump posted a few fics with every issue. Hell, make a whole 'nother magazine series devoted to the fics!
I mean, you'd of course have to run the fic by the author, and if the author doesn't wish for fanfiction of their series to be published then they'd have the right to say the magazine couldn't publish that fandom. But if another editor was hired just for the fanfiction, I think it would actually work! It could be like the anime version of Science Fiction & Fantasy or Asimov's.
Of course, this is all wishful thinking. . .
*sigh*

Aren't there some magazines already out there that publish fanfics? Or do you mean as actual novels instead of in magazines?

I know there are more than a few that publish Star Wars Fanfiction.... *tries to remember what the magazine was called.*

Wow. I never had thought fanfiction could be published. Wouldn't it be plagiarism at some point. Well, not the plot but in terms of the characters?
I could imagine a fanfiction plot being published but with the fandom-related things taken off and made as an original story. In those terms, I might have came across a few works in ff.net that are worth being published.
If a fanfiction is published as it is, wouldn't it mean that legally you have to give some royalty fee to the original creator of the fandom?

i found this one site called lulu.com where you can self publish stories. that doesn't really work for FanFictions because that violates copyright laws and stuff but if you write your own story you can publish it there. I'm working on editing one of my FanFics right now to publish as a private project so it won't get sold but i can have a bound copy. it's a pretty cool site. I've even seen stuff published on lulu.com on bn.com.

I read published Star Wars novels all the time, and I really love them - Dave Wolverton and Timothy Zahn are amazing. Someday I hope I can be one of their ranks.

I've been reading a bit of published Star Wars fiction, though I've yet to finish anything. Actually, the only one I'm more then a few pages into is Death Star by. . . Well, I don't remember who it's by. But it's not too bad; definitely better than I expected.
