I love to play with Silly Putty but it seems like now days there is less and less putty in the egg and the price is going up and up. So imagine my joy when I ran across this page: Wayne Schmidts Silly Putty Page which gives you simple instructions for making your own Silly Putty! All you need is a bottle of Elmer's White School Glue and a box of Borax powder.

Assuming I can get to the store today I am going to attempt this tonight, I'll let you know how it goes. I think it will make a great Christmas gift for my nephews and I want some for myself. For some reason just rolling Silly Putty around in my hands is very calming to me and probably a good crochet warm up for your fingers as well. A friend once gave me some Silly Putty in my Christmas stocking and I kept it for over a year, carrying it around with me in my purse to play with whenever I got bored. Needless to say that putty was pretty nasty and I had to get rid of it but now I can just whip up a batch whenever I want - and as much as I want too! Woo hoo!

I can only say "!!!!!"

Let me know how it goes, this may very well go into the Christmas gift list of things to get small kids when I have absolutely no clue what to do.

Yay - it worked!! I spent $2.69 on the Borax (a huge box) and 89 cents on a 4 oz bottle of glue. The amount you see in the picture was made with about half the bottle of glue and two tablespoons of Borax. It literally took two minutes to make. So it could be a quick cheap gift for the kids on your list.

It breaks apart a little when you squeeze it but I think it will do that less as I play with it, once every last bit of water is kneaded out of it. It's squishy and fun just like Silly Putty. It's a little different but still definitely something that kids would love to play with. You know how there are all the different kinds of putty-like toys like Floam and that farting mud stuff, it's more like that. Now if I can find some nice air tight containers so I won't have to give them out in zip lock bags...

Score indeed! Now to find that Borax stuff and a good box to put it in. The kid's probably never played with silly putty so he'll never know the real stuff from it.

Maybe I'll swing by the craft store today or tomorrow and see if there's any fitting container that's decoration worthy.

I got the Borax from Target in the laundry soap area. It looked exactly like the box in the picture on that page I linked to in the first post.

Maybe you could add food coloring to give it the old fashioned silly putty pink, or any other color you would like.

He did mention adding food coloring but he said it left a faint stain on fabrics so I decided not to color them. Too bad though.
