This is an older (much older) work of mine... and another that isn't completly transposed from paper onto the computer. Some of the chapters can be a bit long, but I don't think you guys will mind too much... I hope. Anyhow, read as much as you want of it and leave a comment/critique/suggestions/etc. And please, forgive the errors in this... I haven't proof read it since I was in the 8th grade. (I've gradated high school- just to give you guys some insight on how old this story is)

Chapter One: Games

"What's the new girl doing here?"

The dark haired girl who spoke pulled a green stocking cap onto her head, looking across the street at the group of people from school who had come to play capture the flag.

"I don't know," answered the dark haired girl's friend, who was dressed completely in black. "She's so bizarre."

Looking across the street, like Eve, Jenny saw the new girl standing with their friend John. She was pretty. Her dark hair hung down to the small of her back and looked perfect, unlike Jenny's hair, which was always wore short to avoid tangles. The new girl had gray eyes that would have been normal apart from the strange way she looked at everything, like she had never seen it before. She was thin, nice, sweet-tempered, a fast learner, and worst of all, had caught John's eye.

"Yeah, she is. I work with her at the Jones' restaurant. She's always late."

"How come?" Asked Jenny, who was more than partial to gossip.

"I don't know, she usually tells the manager some crap about working on her family's house."

"Where does she live?"

"The Wingfeldt Place." Eve answered. "I heard her family is loaded."

"They would have to be to own a place like Wingfeldt!" Jenny looked at the new girl, hate brewing inside of her. "What are her parents? Dentists or something?"

"Yeah," Eve said, starting to loose interest in the subject. "Her dad was, her mom works as an accountant or something. One of her brother's inherited the house from a relative none of them knew they had until after she had died. Her dad died of a stroke about a week after they moved here."

"That's horrible." Jenny said, but didn't really mean it. It was bad to loose a father, but anything that caused the new girl pain was good to her.

"Hey! Eve, Jenny!" John, a tall blonde haired guy dressed in dark red and a black trench coat, called to them from next to the new girl. "We're starting soon!"

"Alright!" Eve called and smiled at Jenny. "Let's go."

Both girls ran across the street and joined the larger group. "Have we chosen teams yet?"

"Nah." One guy said, while wrapping his arms around a girl's waist.

"Who wants to be captains?" Jenny asked. She was never captain, but often took the lead when the group was all together because if she didn't no one would and the night would be spent just hanging out instead of playing.

"I will." John and Eve said together. They grinned and a few others gave looks of wow, what a surprise there at each other.

Splitting into teams went by quickly. Jenny was on John's team, but as a third pick. The new girl had been first. Eve knew that Jenny had wanted to see where she stood with John and hadn't picked her for that reason. She knew as soon as John picked the new girl that she would be listening to Jenny complain about it for days on end.

"Alright, the boundaries for the game are the fence on the other side of Wingfeldt hill, the courthouse, the library, and the school." John told them, leaving them about a half-mile square to play in. Most of it was taken up by Wingfeldt as was tradition. "Who ever gets the other team's flag first has to make it back to their home, get their flag and take it to Greg's front porch. If you're tagged you have to return the flag to the other team's member who tagged you, go back to your home before trying for the flag again." The rules were something all of them knew, but it was customary to repeat them before going into a game.

With a few final smiles the two groups spilt apart. "You've got ten minutes to hide the flag, and remember, you have to be able to see at least two inches of it!"

Jenny walked next to John as he went up the hill and entered the woods with the flag hanging out of his back pocket. The new-girl was walking at his side as well. She smiled at Jenny.

"Hi."

"Yeah, hi." Jenny said and took the flag from John?s pocket. "Who's the guard going to be?"

John turned, looking at the eight people in his group. "How about you Jen? You're the loudest walker and you're the best at it." His bright blue eyes glanced over at the new girl and he smiled.

Jenny wasn't happy. "Yeah, alright. Where are we going to hide it?" Her voice was strained and angry, telling John she wasn't happy, but he didn't seem to notice.

"Up at my house we have a white trellis that you can climb. Go halfway up it, and put the flag through one of the links maybe?" The new girl suggested.

"Great idea Andrea." John said, smiling warmly at her. "So, Jen you do that and the rest of us will split up and search out their flag. Every ten minutes or so one of us has to stop back here to check on the flag and Jenny. Any volunteers?"

"I guess I will." One of the guys said.

"Alright, let's do it!" With those words everyone broke apart going in different directions. Everyone except John. He followed Andrea into the woods. Jenny glared after them before starting at a brisk run up to Wingfeldt place.

Andrea looked around at the woods and sighed lightly. She wore black like most of the others and wondered why she had agreed to play at all. John had asked her if she would at school and she has said yes, thinking it would be a good way to escape life for a while. But it was looking doubtful now that this night would be anything but a pain.

"Andrea?" John was right behind her and his hand shot out, grabbing her arm. She turned to face him. He was taller than her by a few inches and always wore a smile. He was upbeat and talked with everyone, even if his friends didn't like them. In all aspects he was a nice guy. At work the girls loved talking about their most recent meetings with John. One girl, Eve, wouldn't shut up about how much her friend loved John. So it was no wonder that Eve's friend, Jenny, was glaring at her non-stop tonight. John was sticking close, trying to be nice and make sure she didn't feel left out of his group.

"What is it?"

"Well, I like you a lot?" She didn't believe what he was saying to her. It was a dream, or a joke, but there was no way he was serious. They had barely known each other for two weeks.

"John?" He looked at her with his blue eyes, and she stopped talking. His whole face was contorted into the effort of saying what he was.

"Will you go out with me?" He blurted out quickly. It was the first time Andrea had ever heard him sound worried in the least bit. She had known her answer to his question before he had even asked it.

"No." She watched as his face fell, his eyes seemed to loose the shining quality of hope.

"Oh, that's fine." He wasn't used to girls telling him no.

"It's just, well, I don't know. Ever since my dad died..."

"It's okay, I understand. I can wait. But we should go. The game should have started already."

Feeling very uncomfortable suddenly, Andrea nodded. "Yeah."

"They'll try an attack from the rear if I know Eve well enough." He let go of her arm now, and she felt a hundred times better for it.

"Let's go through the garden, and we can try to get them before they get to the house at all." She suggested. John nodded, smiling again.

"Good idea, lead the way."

It was in this way, her leading the way through the grounds of her brother's house, followed by John that they came to find an older garden in the woods round the side of the house. Andrea stopped and stood straight. She had never seen this before, and she was the one working the hardest on the gardens?

"What's wrong Andrea?" John asked, standing from his half bent over position to look too. "It's just a garden. That pile of stones we climbed over was what's left of a wall." He pointed over his shoulder at the rocks, only slightly visible in the moonlight.

"I've never seen this place before." She said.

"Well, you haven't lived here for too long..."

"No, it's not that. I've never seen this place but I feel like I've been here before." She turned and walked further into the woods to an ancient maple tree. She disappeared behind it. John followed, curious.

"Andrea, what are you doing?" His voice was worried again and he caught up with her quickly, taking her arms in his hands, and making her face him. "What do you mean you've been here before?"

Andrea stared at him in silence, something about him had changed. His grip was tight on her arms. "Please let go of me, I need to see if the map is here."

"Map?" John stared at her and Andrea's eyes widened, she had no idea of what she had said, but the vague memory of a dream came floating back to her. A map in a bird bath...

"Listen to me, forget the map. Forget all about it. Just keep walking with me and we'll go play the game." John was talking like he knew what she had said. Still staring at him she tried to back away, but he wouldn't let her. "Please Andrea. Don't go looking for the map. You're safer here... with me."

"You're hurting me." She tried to pull away but he pulled her even closer to him, she could hardly move. "I don't understand what you're talking about John."

"Don't pretend that. You know what I'm talking about." His voice changed again, or it sounded like it did, all Andrea could really tell was that he was no longer speaking English. Her mind moved sluggishly but she still understood him. "You were brought here for your own safety. Don't jeopardize everything you had to give up. Everything I gave up to protect you. Please, just walk away."

She nodded, and he let her go, she took a step away, head ringing with the words he had spoken. What did he mean? He sounded like he knew where she was from. "I need to go?" She ran past him, away from the tree and toward the house. In moments she was in her room and staring at her pale reflection in the mirror.

"Andrea?" Her mother's voice sounded from the hallway.

"Yeah, I'm in my room!"

"Alright, sweetie."

She could hear footsteps coming, and with them she felt dread. She didn't want to see her mother right then. The door opened and John walked in, closing the door behind him softly. "Can we talk?" He asked in that strange language again.

She wanted to scream, throw something at his head, and kick him out of her room, but all she could do was nod. "Sure."

He took off his trench coat, laying it over the back of her desk chair. "How long have you lived in this house?"

"A full month now but you know that already. You were here when I moved in."

"Was I?"

Andrea froze, halfway to the point of saying yes when she remembered what one of the other guys at work had said that for a guy who's been here for a few weeks John sure had a lot of girls after him. He hadn't been there when she arrived, she just didn't realize this because she had been so preoccupied with moving in, getting set for school, and then her father had died... "No."

"That's right. I wasn't here until two weeks ago." He sat down in the chair, leaning his elbows on his knees. "I came here because you did. I've been trying to find you for three years. I should have known you would end up at this house eventually."

"Three years?" She gave him a skeptical look from across the bed. She had been moving non-stop for the last two years. And the one before that she has spent in a hospital because they thought she was crazy. Her parents had explained afterwards that she had been in an accident and when she woke up after being flung from the car she wasn't speaking English anymore and wouldn't respond to her name any longer.

"What do you know about my accident?" She asked quite suddenly, before even really deciding that she was going to talk to him about it. He was scaring her... a lot.

"I know everything about it. What about you?" He answered abstractly.

"I only know what my parents told me. I can't remember it or anything before it. The doctors said I had amnesia... But I'm fine now." Her voice trembled as she spoke. John knew something very important that he wasn't telling her.

"Come on Andrea, the others might be looking for us." He stood up and put on his coat, smiling in his regular way. "Are you coming?"

She stood up, feeling odd all over. He was speaking in English again, and the way he looked at her made her feel like all the odd things just said were a dream. "Yeah, let's go."

The rest of the night was spent playing three games of capture the flag. In the end Eve's team had won twice and Johns once. The group separated to head back to their own houses and sleep away what was left of the night. Andrea walked back through the woods alone, never once feeling as if something would attack her. Other girls often confided that when walking alone at night they felt as if they were being followed, or watched, or jumped at shadows and little things but she had never felt that way.

Instead of using the front door, Andrea went around the side of the house, looking at the forest. John hadn't made her promise not to go back there, and she had never said she would leave it be. Her thoughts ran off giving her every thinkable excuse for going back out into the hidden garden.

The maple tree was there, just past the pile of stone wall. She had been half expecting not to be able to find it at all. Slipping behind the tree she saw what she was looking for, an ancient stone bird bath. It looked to her more like a fountain really. It was a circular dish of murky water resting on the backs of three feline backs. She reached a hand out to touch it.

"I thought I told you to forget about it." John's voice was cold, as he walked to her from the stone rubble.

Her hand rested on the stone, which was sturdy, and not crumbling like the walls. "I'm just curious. I'll be fine. I don't need you to protect me like a little kid in a butcher's shop."

He walked over to her and stood there looking at her. "But you do need me to protect you. That is why I am here, Najena."

"Najena..." She echoed back at him. Inside the feeling of a vague memory was starting to stir, just as it had when she found this garden.

He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her over to him, her hand lingered on the bird bath for as long as it could, but soon the basin was out of reach. "Please. Listen to me. I don't want you to go back. You don't remember any of it. It's the way you said you wanted it to be... please." She used her hands to push away from him a bit and stared up into his eyes. They were large and beseeching.

"John, I don't know what you're talking about." Instead of trying to push away she stayed in his grip, watching his face for a hint to what was going on.

Not even tinge came over his face that she understood. When he spoke it was again in his strange language. "Do you want to go home?"

"Yes."

He let his arms fall away from her sides. "I will return with you, but you have to understand, once we're back there this place will be the dream that you can never have again. I don't know if I can protect you there, but I will try."

Andrea nodded, still not grasping what was going on at all. "I understand."

"I can't work the map." He said slowly, trying to look as if this wasn't embarrassing for him. She didn't see why it would be.

"So?"

"So, I need to be touching you for it to work."

Again she wanted to ask "So?" but refrained. Maybe he didn't realize that he had been touching her no more than a few moments ago. "That's fine."

Not even a minute later they were both standing in front of the bird bath, looking down at a map. John took her left hand in his as she reached down to touch a country. Instinctively it was drawn to the largest but John protested and moved her free hand to a country farther east.

"This one." He said firmly as she touched it. Blood red light seeped into every pore of her and John's body in a second before clearing away and showing a very different scene.

I really enjoyed that story, Navenna. It just had an enjoyable quality to me. Something I can't really describe. I'm very interested in what's going to happen next-do you have more?

I like how these teens(I assume that they are teenagers) get together to play Capture the Flag. For me, it's not a typical teenager activity, and I found it fun to read. whee Would this be a small town they're in?

The description of the garden is lovely, and so is the fountain/birdbath. Is Alec the guy who's protecting Andrea, or someone else?

The only thing that struck me as awkward was this sentence: She had never seen this before, and she was the one working the hardest on the gardens? That's not bad at all, easy to change. Other than that, there's few things to be forgiven for, and if there is, it's not blaring in my head. sweatdrop

As a side note, I'm going to miss you, Navenna! A lot of people are leaving the guild. eek Well, technically you're not leaving the guild...just taking a year-long hiatus. But who knows if the guild's still going to be around? This is pretty much my only hangout, which is sad. sweatdrop *waves*

I have quite a few chapters past this, yes.

They would be in a smaller town, yes. My friends (the guys at least) and I used to play capture the flag and a game we called hunter-hunted which is extreamist hide-and-seek where one person is 'it' and everyone else is hunting them while they're hunting them. It's great fun.

No, John is not Alec... they are completly different people. All will be reveiled... eventually ninja

For your side note: I'm going to miss you too. If I can I'll stop in while I'm over that but I'm not sure if I'll be able to or not.

*hugs* Yes, it does sound like great fun. I don't get to do that. I've been unable to be that person that goes out and plays...with other people. I'm not friendless, it's just that me and my compatriots don't see the sun as much. It's sad.

I can't wait for the next chapters! ^o^ Yay.

I'm glad you're going to try to continue posting. I could send you random PM's so you'd have a little fun when you returned to gaia. whee Or would random PM's not be your thing?

Lol, we never ever played those games in the sunlight. They're best played as night games. We broke the city's curfew many a time in our days...

I'm working on posting the next chapter for you. (I have to fix the puncuation crap on it)

I love random pms so long as they aren't asking for money or sex. sweatdrop

Yay! New chapter! Now that we're getting deeper into it, it becomes more and more enjoyable. I absolutely love what you name the countries and guardians. I have a thing with names. I was getting confused at the end, but I'll probably understand it later.

Suddenly, my late-night surfing schedule is tiring me. Maybe it's that feeling of the school year ahead. A premonition of sleepless nights...*yawns* =_=

Thanks, as usual, for the review Fire. I appreciate it. I'm in Taiwan now and have been for a couple weeks now. Things are awesome over here b ut boredom is something I now have to cope with quite a lot. This means I get to read (I'm on the last book out of five that I brought with me) and write a lot. I've re-written the last bit of chapter I posted last and am now working on the rest of the story. Sometime I'll get it typed up and posted for you. Take care. heart

Nice to hear from you! *hugs* I'm glad you're doing alright in Taiwan(except for the lonliness part). I hope you'll be able to cope there...you're always able to make new friends in Taiwan. I'm happy you found the time to tell us what's up. ^____^ I'm looking forward to seeing what you've written.

Chapter Three: Lies

Andrea could no longer see the dragon because she was indoors. The air was heavy with strong smelling insence that was much too musky to be nice. The light in the long room she was in came from hanging lanterns that resembled dragon heads. The mouths were open to reveal the burning breath that was the burning oil of the lamps. Everything on the walls and ceiling, with the exception of the hanging lanterns was made of dark wood with intracate carvings done into it. The floor was tiled in jade, simly reflecting the dragon's breath.

Although beautiful the hall gave her a feeling like a church after hours. It was a holy place and she was breaking some unwritten law from being there alone and without any intentions of honoring the God of this temple.

She chose a direction and started walking that way. Every step she took made loud resounding noises that echoed back to her several times before dying off. After only a few steps she stopped and removed her shoes. Continuing on in her socks she felt much less obtrusive.

For a few blissful minutes she remained undiscovered. It was the first real breathing room she had gotten since she and Carrick had left Wingfeldt place for this strange new world that wasn't all that new to Carrick at all. It even had a familiar feel to Andrea, like she had seen it in a dream. As this thought crossed her mind she realized all too clearly that she had seen this place in a dream. It was the dream that had made her go back to that garden and her inborn curiosity that had shattered her thoughts of reality and thrown her into this mess.

At the end of the room she found a set of sliding doors that seemedto be made out of jade colored paper. It was illuminated from the other side and once Andrea figured out how to open the doors she was met with the blaze of sunlight from the other side.

Shes teppedo ut into the light and let her eyes adjust as she put on her shoes again. There were a few steps leading down from the temple that merged with a path of white stones. The path led into the flower garden she had seen on the map and branched there to go in several other directions. She had only just put her foot down onto the stone path when a bright eyeed and smiling woman appeared from behind a bush.

"G'mornin'." She said in a voice that was a bit too high and cheerful to be likeable. It reminded andrea a great deal of cartoon character voices.

"Morning." She replied automatically.

"Are you a guest at the inn, love?"

"No ma'am, I'm not. I came here looking for help however." Andrea wasn't sure what sort of help she needed or could receive. She was starting to get used to not knowing what she was doing and saying things without understanding why she said them or what half of it meant.

"What sort of help do you need child?" The woman's voice deepened with concern and she held out a hand for Andrea to take. When Andrea had taken it the gardening lady led her away from the temple in a motherly fashion.

"I ran into trouble with someone I thought was a friend and I need somewhere safe to stay for a while. I'll work while I'm here in exchange for you hospitality." Andrea said all this rather quickly, as if she really was panicing. But in reality she felt quite calm about the whole situation. Even a little bit smug. Carrick wouldn't find her here.

"My dear child, of course you can stay here for as long as you wish. There is no need for you to work to earn your keep or our silence. My sisters and brothers maintain everything well enough on their own."

"But I'd feel bad if I didn't do something to help..." Andrea protested. She didn't mention how bored she might get, the Gardener seemed to understand.

"We'll see what we can come up with for you. Fr the time being let's get you settled at the inn."

Andrea stopped in the path, causing the motherly woman to stop as well. "He- my friend that is- will probably check the inn. Is there any way I can stay with the-"

Again the woman seemed to understand. "With the priestesses?" She frowned for a moment, looking at Andrea but then nodded. "We'd better take you to see the Temple Master. He'll know what to do."

The Temple Master turned out to be a rather young man. He was not at all an attractive man however, which made it seem fitting to Andrea's mind that he'd choose a life as a priest instead of trying to start a family of his own of even to seek his fortunes elsewhere in the world. His face, and entire body, was pudgy, his eyes were set too far apart and one of them was missing with a patch over it, his nose was oily, his hair was worn in a messy style where the tightly curled ginger hair stuck off of his head in tufts. It looked rather like someone had taken the old woman's shears and tried to cut this man's hair in the night. She imagined the way his mouth firmly sat in a straight line between two very deep dimples that were not cute in any way was result of that poor haircutting experience.

He sat rigidly in his chair as they entered and seemed to take just as long in looking at Andrea as she did looking at him. When both of their curiosities seemed satisfied he nodded his head towards a chair. Andrea sat down and his face broke into what Andrea supposed was a rare smile. The smile faded as Andrea explained why she was there and what she wanted.

At last it was his turn to speak. His voice was pleasant, even if the rest of them wasn't. "Of course we'll do anything we can to help you. It's in our Temple Code to do so. You may join the ranks but remember that this means you take on all the responsibilities and rules of the Temple as well."

Andrea quickly agreed, silently hoping this wasn't a temple where they sacrificed living things. She'd rather skip that bit of life.

"Welcome to Five Bay Temple then." He said, standing up to shake her hand. His hand was a horrible purplish color and Andrea didn't look forward to touching it.

"Five Bay Temple?" She repeated, standing as well. "I thought that this was the Temple of Almon-Ohv."

The purple hand was taken away then, without being shook. For that Andrea was releived. But any relief this gave to her shrank away as she noticed the looks she was geting from the Temple Master and the gardener.

"That is a private name used only by the most devote believes in our God. I will thank you never to use it again."

Andrea stared and then nodded. "Yes, I'm sorry..."

They seemed to accept her responce and the meeting ended without further conversation.

- - -

"Cinthia!" The name sounded even worse in the high pitched voice of the gardening woman. She had learned that the woman went by Nina, though no one ever seemed to call her by name. In fact, names were rarely used among the people of the temple. They all knew exactly where to find everyone else, regardless of the time of day. But, seeing as she had been there only a week, they all used her name far too often. The only upside to this that Andrea could see was that she was getting used to responding to Cinthia.

"Yes?" Andrea called back, looking up from the path she was sweeping. In the temple she had two main jobs, keeping the rooms of the inns clean for guests and keeping the pathways outside looking neat. Generally speaking, it was dull work but it was something to do and no one spoke gave away anything of why she was there, so she never complained.

"Oh good." Nina said, bustling up. She had the usual pair of pruning sheers in her hands and came from the bushes instead of the path. Andrea was beginning to wonder if she ever used the path at all. "I was hoping I'd find you out here. We've got two very important guests arriving sometime today to stay at the inn and the rooms need some attention before they are used."

"That shouldn't be a problem. How much time do you think I have?"

"Not much, they arrived two minutes ago. They're here quite a bit earlier than when they said to expect them."

Andrea groaned slightly. "Which rooms?"

"Just number five, the two of them are sharing. I think they're sweet on each other." Nina winked and Andrea grinned at her for a moment before handing over her broom and starting for the inn at a jog.

The guests were just inside the door of the inn and Andrea very nearly ran into them. They didn't look all that important to her. They dressed like most people who she had seen visit the temple. What caught her by surprise was not their rather ordinary appearances, however. It was the fact that she knew them both despite them not being anyone she had met thus far on her trip in this dream world.

Unfortunatly one of guests recognized her as well. She could tell by the expression on his face as he looked at her. He was at least ten years her elder and had a very ruggad appearance which rather suited his facial structure. His jaw line would be far too pronounced if it wasn't covered in stubble. His body frame was sturdy, although he looked a bit thin to her eyes. His own eyes stared bessechingly at her, begging silently for an answer to a question she could only guess at.

"I'm sorry for the wait, your room isn't quite ready yet. If you don't mind waiting a short while I can fix it up for you and get you something to drink while you wait. The gardens are particularily beautiful right now if you're interested in walking to pass the time."

"You work here?" The man asked, a suspicious tilt to his eyebrow.

"I liveh ere as well." She said with a friendly smile. He was prying for the same thing her mind was racing to figure out- were these people who she thought they were?

"Those two things do tend to go hand in hand around here." He replied, still looking at her oddly.

"Yes, Sir, they do. What can I get the two of you to drink?"

"Nothing for me." The female guest replied. She wasn't following the conversation between the two and didn't seem to recognize Andrea. For that, Andrea was glad.

"I'm not thirsty either." The man said quickly. "If you don't mind the bother we'll just go to the room now. We can unpack while you finish cleaning it up." At this suggustion his companions shot him a puzzled look to which he simply replied wordlessly that he'd explain later.

Of course, Andrea did mind the bother of them being in the room while she cleaned it. It would be crowded with three people and they'd undoubtedly get in her way. And, she strongly suspected that his motives for suggusting such a thing was to pry some answers out of her. But she didn't know what those answers were, although she could easily guess the questions.

She nodded silently and led the way to the room, opening the door and letting them inside first. The cleaning supplies she needed were already inside and waiting for her. And sure enough, when she started cleaning and the two of them started to unpack the questions began.

"How long have you been living here?"

"Just about a week now." It was a good idea to stick as close to the truth as she could. "Before that I as living with my parents."

"Where do they live?"

"Near the Third Bay. Our house there is in the middle of nowhere really..."

"I see, your accent sounds native to Rocinu so I thought you might be from there."

"Both of my parents grew up there." She was impressed with how easily these lies were coming to mind.

"When did they move to the island?"

"Before I was born. I forget by how many years though..."

"And what did you say your name was?"

She was nearly finished and looked up at him, grinning.

"I didn't say. My name is Cinthia. If you need anything while you're staying here be sure to ask. Anyone of us at the temple would be glad to help you."

"Actually, there is something I want you to do for me before you go and do whatever it is that needs doing."

She paused at the door, anxious to leave.

"Yes?"

"Tell me the truth. Who are you, really?" There was a chill to both his voice and eyes.

His female companion stepped between him and Andrea and glared at him.

"Oh really Elliah, would you stop harrassing the poor girl already? We both know she's telling the truth or else the testing spell you put on her would be going off by now."

Elliah looked quite put out, and looked closely at Andrea. If his spell worked and she did lie her face would have turned a sickening shade of blue. But there wasn't even a tint of blue to her complexion.

"You can go then." Elliah muttered, turning away from Andrea and his female friend.

"Thank you, Sir. Enjoy your stay Lord Elliah, Lady Corba."

She turned and left, missing the ehated converstion that followed the closing of the door.

- - -

"Idiot." Elliah said spitefully, turning to his companion. She stood with a look of blatant shock on her face.

"Maybe she learned my title from someone else?"

"Lienor, you haven't gone by Corba in your entire life. There are only a few people who even know it's your name."

"Okay, so it's suspicious but we can't jump to conclusions, Elliah."

"But she knows things about you that no one else knows... even if someone used your full title it doesn't make sense. We didn't tell anyone we were coming here except Pan, and I dobut she's very talkative with temple girls."

"Stop being so damned logical, you're giving me a headache. I'm trying to find some glimmer of a doubt to prove that girl was and is not Najena."

"It certianly did look like her... older of course..."

"Yes." Lienor said, defeat in her voice. But then she thought of something. "The truth spell you used on her- it didn't respond to any lies. Maybe she really is who she says she is."

"Assuming nothing has changed in the past three years, my spell wouldn't have worked on Najena. She never liked having people testing her with magic... and her gifts are stronger than ours. Also, what if she had Alec do a memory charm on her? Maybe to her mind she really is Cinthia, the temple girl from the country side?"

"Damn it, Elliah. You're right."

"I know." He grinned at her until he caught sight of her less than pleased expression. "Alright, I'm sorry. I know this causes mroe trouble than anyone can predict but the fact that she recognized us, or at least you, and still lied to us is the first thing we need to worry about. We were friends at one point, so why does she lie and hide from us now? What has happened to her in the past three years and why now, out of all times, does she choose to reappear?"

"Maybe she didn't choose to reappear. There was no way to know we were coming here. And this is a safe place. Even if the man-hunt for her was still going on Pan refused to let the Rocinu guards search her island."

"Yeah, I remember. She insisted that she watched over entries to her land very carefully."

"Do you think she still does?"

"Knowing Pan? Yes. But Najena wouldn't come here by convential means, would she?"

"The maps..." Lienor said quietly.

"Yes."

"Which do you think she had acess to?"

"Alec's maybe... but that's assuming she's been on the island for three years..."

"Well, let's find out what we can about her from the other people here. They must know something." Lienor suggested, half-heartedly. It felt hopeless. Najena was a careful person. She would ensure her safety and if Alec had helped she would be even more secure.

"I'll go speak with the Temple Master and see if he can or will tell me anything."

Lienor sighed and sank down onto the bed.

"Good luck."

Elliah sat next to her for a minute, his hands braced on her shoulders.

"I hope I don't need it."

He kissed her lightly before departing to seek some much needed answers.
