It had been a day since what he referred to as "the change" and as his tired paws carried him forward his head hung low and his tongue lolled from his mouth. Cruelty was defined as this: the sudden occurrence of being thrown into what is different than understood previously, or at least this was also the wolf's personal ideals. A limp hindered his otherwise beautiful gait but his eyes rested at half staff giving him a defeated expression. Had Herne abandoned his child and left him to suffer as this alien animal? Not only had his body changed, but his ailment he had in his "true" form had transferred over as well, making this otherwise new and perfect body a horribly grotesque fact. He remained crippled. How was he to hunt? And what?
The thought of killing and devouring another living creature forced bile to slip into his throat. His stomach churned horrifically causing him to pause in his steps and stare at the grassy terrain yellow with winter. A low whimper echoed passed his maw, but it was to his surprise for he had inwardly expected a deer's sigh instead of that of a wolf's.
"Why Herne? Have I fallen from y our path? Have I been disowned?" he cast his eyes skyward, staring up at the open endless blue waters that held the foamy clouds above. His senses were keen, but with his distraction he could not imagine another of his kind would soon be joining him.

Mismatched paws pounded against the dry earth as a sleek dark furred form ran almost tirelessly after the small rabbit that ran before him. His pink tongue hung out of his mouth as he panted for each breath. His gold eyes sparkled with the thrill of the hunt. His tail waved high in the air like a white-tipped banner of death. The rabbit's eye buldged with fear. The game wore on almost like it had no end, the relationship between predator and prey.
The rabbit took a sharp turn and so did the strange wolf, not one paw slipping from it's place. Drool-filled jaws opened slowly revealing every sharp tooth in his maw. Just as he was about to snap the final blow into the scrawny rabbit furry neck, the rabbit saw the other sulking wolf and turned extreamly sharply to the right. The other wolf's jaws snapped down on air. Disorinated for a split second, the brown and white male slammed into the caramel stranger throwing them both into the dust. The rabbit got away.
"Dammit!" barked the wolf in a deeply annoyed voice, "What is your problem? That happened to be my lunch and this happens to be my haunt. Do you know.....wait a second...I've never seen you before in my life. Who in the name of Wolfbane are you?" His roar turned into a soft growl. His hackles raised. He was not pleased at all, but didn't feel the least bit threatened. Conall tilted his head to the side as he sat back on his haunches. This odd stranger smelled of deer.....

The first oddity about this new stranger was the words he barked at Valebrook and though he did not comprehend who Wolfbane was, if he had grown up within the wolf community he would have understood the dark ties to the creature associated with the devil himself. But regardless he was still baffled and aghast he had been thrown off his feet and now lay in the dusty grass listening to the enraged shouts of the snarling wolf.
"Oh," he muttered, slowly lifting himself, releasing the pressure on his right leg feeling a horrid pain ache through it as he stepped upon its pads. Turning his brown eyes to gaze at the other wolf Valebrook initially felt the urge to stand and leap away with the flight of a deer, but as it sunk in further, he understood his place was here on the ground and with his fellow wolf.
"I'm sorry, please forgive me...I've been distracted lately," he said to appease the iron will of the aggressor. Confrontation was the least of his wants at this point in time. His will denied him.

"Is...your paw hurting you?" Collan asked out of curosity. His tail swished lazily behind him. He yawned, his long pink tongue making an apperance. He suddenly grinned a huge wolfish grin. He was a born pack leader, he was just too lazy. A father maybe, but never a pack leader though he would make a great one. He felt a fatherly urge to take care of this ingured caramel colored wolf.
Lowering his hackles, Collan stood and circled Valebrook in order to gain knowladge about this newcomer. "I'm Collan. And you would be...?" he said in introduction.

The questioned took the new wolf by surprise having not thought of the leg used to the feeling of pain well enough to ignore every spark. Hazel eyes searched the other wolf, before it finally dawned on him he was needed for an answer. "Oh...no, I've had the limp for a long time. I'll be alright," he told him, knowing there was nothing the other wolf could do to solve the problem anyway. There was one thing about the wolf that did catch Valebrook's attention: his fatherly gaze. It disturbed him almost to see the friendly nature of a creature he had always viewed as savage or at least dangerous. The previous deer knew not the wolf way and was slowly learning how to understand their culture.
"Well, I'm Valebrook. It's a pleasure...Conall," he replied to the question, feeling his tail lower. Those ears pulled to the side, neither forward nor back in dominance or submission. The caramel wolf understood not the law of these lean creatures.

Collan threw his head back and laughed, a howling noise to an non-wolf ear. "I like you!" he snickered rolling on the ground, "You are so unwolflike. Fenris have mercy on me!" It took a while for the loner to regain his sences. He stood and shook himself out, his dusk colored fur rippling from the extreame movement.
His yellow eyes sparkled with amusement. "You can remain in my territory as long as you want. If you wish, we may hunt together. Your limping will most likely hinder your ability to hunt," the wolf offered his new friend with a swish of his tail. His stomach quietly growled. He was starving. After not eating for a few days, he would be hungry. His ears twitched foward and his tongue hung out. "I hear food," he growled glancing at Valebrook, awaiting an answer.

The wolf jumped slightly when the other canine laughed out historically causing him to open his eyes widely and stare at him not understanding the source of his laughter. It was when he mentioned he was unwolflike that Valebrook gave a sheepish grin. 'If only he knew,' he thought. Flicking his tail, he stared at Collan.
His ears pulled back when he heard his pardon into his territory and wondered if he belonged to a pack and if that pack would find Valebrook a nuisance. He paused only when the brown tinted wolf made not of the near by food causing his stomach to churn. Though it growled, begging for nourishment and attention the idea of killing another animal and then feeding upon it sickened him. His expression clearly stated this displeasure. "I...I don't know if I can help you."

"Suit yourself," huffed Conall, "Wait right here then. I don't want you to scare it." With that said, the brown and cream wolf stalked off towards a pile of brush a little further off.
Stalking foward on silent paws, Collan crept closer and closer to where he smelled the sent of prey. With a low growl, Collan pounced. The brown rabbit from before plus one black one ran from the brush. The black rabbit was a lot fatter than the brown, so Collan zoomed in on that one. The rabbit's feet slapped the earth in order to gain speed, but he wolf was slightly faster. Again, the teeth-filled jaws opened, and again the rabbit made a sharp turn to the side. Collan had no chance of making that turn.
"Vale-what's-your-name! He's coming to you! Get him!" Collan howled, tripping over a large stick. He slammed to the earth, defeated. He prayed to Fenis and Tor that Valebrook would get the damned rabbit.

As the wolf flushed out the creatures, Valebrook sat back unable to watch and was tortured every second he was forced to hear the squealing of the two innocent creatures about to loose their lives. Even if one was spared the wolf was displeased with even one having lost a life. It was only ironic when the remaining rabbit, the same as before, had turned once more toward the camel wolf as if it sensed his previous form and sought refuge in him.
Immediately his body trembled violently while his hazel eyes reflected the muddy colored form sprinting toward him. His heart heaved heavily as gasps crawled from his throat. 'No...no don't make me do this,' he thought rapidly. What disgusted him the most was that as he stared at the creature he felt a distant pang of hunger. A sour taste slithered into his mouth causing him to instantly wrench away from the scene and through the entire contents of his stomach into the rusty grass. Spatting, Vale tried to clear his mouth.
'So dirty...so horribly dirty. Why Herne, why would you want me to do something so horrid?' Conall would be without a meal once more. "Please forgive me."

Conall wimpered as he watched his meal once again sprint away. His ears drouped and his head sagged. How long could he last like this? His stomach roared painfully inside him. With a lonesome howl, Conall flopped down onto the dry earth and curled weakly into a ball. "Wolfbane kill me. End this hunger," he whined. Three days wasn't long, but with pleantiful prey and bad hunting skills, Conall was on his last leg.

The whimpering broke Vale's heart. 'Not only am I causing myself grief, but this stranger as well...' he observed inwardly, feeling the extent of his guilt now spread to other near by members. Crestfallen, the wolf hung his head staring blankly down at the parched grasses that blended so well with his tan colored fur. His tail wrapped around the side of his leg, almost surprising him clearly because of his lack of custom to the lengthy appendage. It only reminded him of his situation further.
Sigh.
"I'm sorry Conall. It seems I'm no good at being a wolf...forgive me," he spoke suddenly in his usual deep by whimsical voice. The only difference was that it was weighed down with self loathing and disappointment. "I think it would be best if we parted ways. I can't help you hunt...I can't even hunt for myself."

Conall found it within himself to stand back on his four mismatched colored paws. His ears drouped and his tail sagged, a pathetic pose. His yellow eyes still sparkled with a deep love for life, though he howled for death to deliver him. "Are you a wolf at all?" he mused quietly licking his drying nose.
He stumbled over back to Valebrook. "Why not stay? If I ever find a mate and have pups, you can watch them instead of the female!" he laughed. Suddenly, his tone turned stern, "We can try to begin a pack. I feel as if I'm slowly losing myself wandering alone. I envy those Firebringer hoofheads for their pack size. Why not stay with me here? At least then, we can keep each other sane." He halfheartedly wagged his ivory tipped tail and wimpered a plea for this caramel wolf to agree. He was sick of being alone.

His head dropped farther when the question arose but he said nothing in return, not ready to feel the fangs he was sure he would receive if he ever told another wolf of his true origin. Even kind Conall was sure to turn his back on the one who was once his enemy. Somewhere deep within him a sick black thought warped his mind wondering if it would be a wise thing to let Conall know and allow the fangs to tear out his caramel throat spilling his red blood on the grass and finally setting himself free for good. Valebrook shook his head violently feeling sick once more but instead his sickness was aroused by his own dark thoughts. 'No, I could never resort to such a pitiful state.'
Those hazel eyes only turned to face the wolf when a rather shocked expression crossed his face when he heard what the stranger had to say. Was he serious? Conall was just an aquatint to the new wolf, how could Valebrook trust him? But more importantly, could Conall trust Vale? Sure he had no intention of leading the brown wolf astray, but he couldn't be counted on to support any pack, after all he couldn't hunt, he was weaker than your average wolf, crippled, and distant. He didn't feel he belonged with wolves...it was evident he didn't belong with deer either. Where was he to go?
A sigh escaped him as a defeated hurt look filled his eyes. "I suppose we could travel together...for a while." It wasn't Conall that hurt him, but instead the situation. He was pained for being put in this position and pitifully longed for his home.

Conall wanted to bite Valebrook at this point. "Look," he growled, "If you don't like me, say so and I'll only run you out. If you do, then you may stay. You are too near the Hoofheads to be crippled and alone so think about your situation a little more! You are a wolf! Think!" His little rant ended in a promising snarl. It pained the warm-hearted wolf to be so mean, but such was life.
Conall spun around, his back facing Valebrook and marched off a few paces. A running start if Valebrook chose wrong. Turning to face the caramel wolf again, Conall's mustard yellow eyes glimmered. A blank expression remained on his furry features. He would let Valebrook choose, for better or for worse.

Large eyes whipped to stare at the snarling wolf while the tan ears pulled back accordingly and lay flat on his head. Even his neck shrunk down in fright was he wearily watched the actions of the larger wolf not at all expecting him to snap at him like that just after he accepted his offer. What did liking Conall have to do with his depression? And what could this wolf possibly understand when it came to Vale's troubles. In some way this offended Valebrook and stirred an inward rage at being questioned, but even more so it created a horrible guilt for having ever offended the previously kind wolf in the first place.
A soft whimper escaped him.
"I-it's not you that is bothering me, Conall, in fact I appreciate your kindness fully but it's hard for me to portray my gratitude fully," he started, not lifting himself from the ground. His tail wrapped around his hip. "I respect you not questioning my reason, but of late I just...can't seem...." he fell silent. How disgraceful he had been. 'Get over it, dammit! Sitting her moping around isn't going to help you!' his cruelest judge was himself after all and though he knew what he had to do it was harder actually going through with his recovery. "I do want to follow you. I don't mind accompanying you."
