It was his first time out alone. Kaolin was now an outrider, a protector of the herd... the best thing that had ever happened to him up to that point in his short life.
The excitement ran through his whole body, mostly in the manner of adrenaline. His senses were sharper: he could see clearer, hear better, and his smell was as sensitive as it ever would be. Kaolin's ears swivelled left and right and his nostrils flared - the young outrider was determined to not let anything get past him! No fox would threaten the herd, especially with all the young ones born from last Anlach.
No rock was left unturned, no log unexpected. Kaolin, young and full of energy, was dead-set on his duty.

It was curious the way experience tended to bestow the experienced with its brand. Some were luxury, like a calm, relaxed stillness; others were borne of necessity, akin to the attentive flicks of large, tender ears, or the cautious sweep of watchful eyes.
Forever cycling between the experienced and the inexperienced, the ranks of the Firebringer Outriders were filled out by former Corps, brought up and instructed by older mentors in the form of their comrades and Captains. The pale form moving through the growth was a youngling once, too - he remembered, even if it did feel like something that was long ago.
He wasn't old, by any means, but he was seasoned; any observer could tell as much, judging from his regal poise, his careful step, or even his arching, ivory antlers. They were not the most extravagant he had seen, but they were by no means small, and attested to his years.
None of these were things Aldan would typically have on his mind, but as he made his afternoon patrol, arching around the boundaries of the herd, and his pale eyes fell on the sight of another... Really, it was difficult to think of anything but.
The chocolate figure had all the makings of a youngling; it was blatant to an eye as trained as his. And while it was probably something of an unjust accusation to consider him such - he was, after all, no pricket, nor even a Corps - for Aldan, it was also difficult to think of him as anything else. In his experience (and opinion), much was subject to change in one's first few seasons protecting the herd, and one didn't come into his own until at least a year or two later.
There was no harm in seeing how he fared in the meantime though. Ever-sociable, and perhaps a bit curious, too, the stag pushed toward the focus of his attention, his hooves quietly parting the underbrush as he came more clearly into view.

Oh... he heard that! What was it? Kaolin's head twitched to the sound, his antlers lowered just in case it was a predator or enemy or.... something else better left unnamed. The young outrider looked along his forehead to see the form coming closer.
The coat was white, and there was a grace to the movements. Kaolin relaxed as he noticed the antlers and that smooth smooth attitude. It was another Outrider, though one who knew what to do and how to do it. He was obviously experienced and for a moment, Kaolin was slightly ashamed.
The adrenaline drained, and as his senses dulled back to normal, the threatening antlers turned to one of greeting as he lowered his head in a slight bow before lifting it back up.
"Good morn to you," Kaolin called out. He stood straighter and more proud, as if the professional act he put on now might make up for his brash motions earlier.
