Not ranked and not a successful fisher. Can anyone explain the different kinds of fish to me and how many you need to catch to trade them in--then what do you get? A hat? I am confused....

There's a couple of stickies in the fishing forum that explain the trade system. Basically, for most fish, if you get 100, you can exchange them for a hat or helm. They have pictures in the stickies too. For junk, you can get items too though the number of junk items you need increases. Each lake has 3 types of fish, a small, medium and large fish. For Bass'ken, it'd be guppies (small), bass (medium) and stripers (large). There's also 3 kinds of rares in each lake, though those are extremely rare. Some people fish for the hats or helms, while others do it for profit. You can sell the fish you catch back to the fishing store for a small price. Or you can sell them on the marketplace if you get a vending pass (1000 g) and then sell stuff to other Gaia users. As an example, Logan will buy a striper for 13 g, but you can sell it on the marketplace for up to 100 g. That's how some people earn the majority of their gold.
