I was just wondering... Aang is naturally an air bender and his animal guide is a flying bison, and the last avatar was a fire bender and he had a flying dragon.
If the avatar was earth or water, what animal would they have, and would they be required to fly?

Water might be a flying water serpent? We know that the animal for earth bending is the badger from the cave of two lovers since it was them that taught the first earth benders. So maybe there's a flying one of those too? Haha. You never know.

Penguins would be amazing... but they still can't fly. Although gliding everywhere on bent ice would be pretty cool. I just don't know if a bender can sustain such a feat though lol
hmm... i wonder if sea dragons can fly... but then again all the animals in the show are mixed with another. I love turtle ducks. hehe they flee when they see azula though.

The AirBenders were taugh how to bend air by the Flying Byson and the Earth Benders were taught how to bend earth by the badger-moles. However, the moon taught Water Benders how to bend water, and it was never revealed who or what taught the Fire Benders but it is speculated to be the sun. From this, we know that the Badger-Mole would be the Earth Animal Guide, and the Flying Byson the Air Animal Guide. Through all the texts and videos of Avatar, it is never revealed what the Water Animal guide is, but fire is revealed to be the dragon. Keep in mind that Fire Lord Sozin had a dragon as well.

Something off-topic, but it involves animals (dragons to be specific):
Remember the episode in which Zuko is very ill and dreams of himself as Firelord, an then suddenly two dragons (one blue, other red) are around him? The blue one (Azula) tells him to sleep, the red one (Iroh) tells the opposite..
Well, I assume you all saw the episode where Zuko and Aang discover some of Roku and Sozin's past? I noticed the two dragons they had: Roku (good-guy) had a red one, Sozin (bad-guy) had a blue one. Coincidence maybe?

Well.....waterbending was learned watching the moon....so....I have no Idea what animal an water-bender avatar should have....but earthbending was learned watching that gigantic blind moles that tought Toph how to bend.... But I just can't imagine Avatar Kyoshi with an gigantic mole by her sideO.o

Well we know that the Badger Moles represent the earth benders. As far as animals go? None in specific have been mentioned for the water benders---they used the moon as reference claiming their ancestors learned how to bend from the moon...
