I'll admit that the first thing I heard fasting associated with was dieting/people wanting to lose weight. Then, I heard it as health benefits (which is true when done correctly) Then there's where I am now. Where fasting is a time where we forego a meal in order to praise and worship...unfortunately, I don't know of anyone who regularly practices fasting...I'm even guilty myself...

I found this site to be pretty informative on the subject if anyone would like to check it out...

What are people's thoughts and opinions? Do we want to start planning specific days where we can fast together as a group?

I recently spoke to a nursing student who is also a Christian. She says she has learned that fasting is very hard on the body and puts your setpoint up higher, so that people will gain a little more weight after they come off from a fast than they should. She says no one should ever fast if they don't have to.

So, I think it should be done only under serious circumstances and not just to be more holy in general. It's not something we are commanded to do, unlike Bible reading, fellowshipping, witnessing and praying. Those should be practiced a lot, but fasting is more of a rare, special event

My two cents.

as i understand it fasting is not giving up a meal to worship god, that's lent. fasting is spending the day in prayer and worship. you eat only after the sun has gone down. that's the traditional method. you could do this for days on end, and as long as you were able to replenish your body when you did eat after dark there would be little physical effect. it's not about going hungry, it's about uninterrupted time with god. it's not dangerous and does strengthen your faith. i myself have done it several times and find it refreshing.
i hope this little bit of advice can help you in some way.
yours in christ,
