I'm not a Christian myself and I don't believe in the Bible. I haven't seen the inside of a church since grandma dragged me to a funeral sometime in the mid-nineties.

I do, however, like the excuse to decorate my home with candles, meet relatives, eat tons of candy and crack nuts 'til my hands bleed.

Presents don't impress me. I like the idea of giving money to charity rather than buying useless toys. I also like giving things to poor people who don't have a home or enough to eat. I happily admit I never give money to beggars on the street, but I don't mind giving them food or blankets.

Discuss:
- Is Christmas too capitalistic? (ie Is it too much about buying things?)
- Should non-christians "celebrate" it?
- Should all religion be taken out of it?
- What does Christmas mean to you (personally) and why?

I'm a christian & celebrate christmas for both religious & non religious reasons.

Is Christmas too capitalistic? (ie Is it too much about buying things?) Yes it is.

Should non-christians "celebrate" it? Everyone must choose what is best for them.

Should all religion be taken out of it? Since religion is tied into christmas I'd say leave it in. People don't have to celebrate x-mas for religious reasons if they don't want to.

What does Christmas mean to you (personally) and why? Other than the obvious religious reasons for me it's about friends & family. Spending time with those you love.

I don't celebrate Christmas.

For starters, it's not even when Jesus was born. Pagans had a holiday around the end of december and the Christians adopted it and just changed the reason for the celebration.

I could go into a lot of other reasons for not celebrating, but since I'm not a member of the Christian sect I don't have to bother.

Any excuse to get free stuff is good enough for me.

Chistmas in general is just too much of a let'e-spend-more-money-than-we-have-event. People seem to honestly think their kids will be happier if the family is on the verge of economic ruin. I can honestly tell you those toys will only be fun for about five minutes (or if you're lucky - days) and then they'll be begging for more before you've even gotten your credit card bill.

What happened to "it's the thought that counts"?

Parents might need to remember that love goes a long way and that it's not always the the kid who gets the most presents that's the happiest - or turns out to be the better adult later in life.

I am a christian and I celebrate christmas even though I know that Jesus wasn't born in december he was born in september but the whole point is that we celebrate his birth it doesn't matter when he was born as long as we remember him.
