I like the people on Gaia who claim to be swordmasters/makers, when they can't answer rudimentary questions about swords, and try to lecture me. This is the reason for my new siggy pic.

DopplerZero 235...are those swords form-molded or actually tempered and folded? Those are hand made, hand forged, tempered and... Well... I'm not too sure about folded steel, but whatever... They are made by actual sword makers who are good enough at their craft to actually make a living out of it for 20+ years. In essence, those are REAL swords made TO BE USED, not to be eye candy. They are also made to be historically accurate, too. Oh, how many cinder blocks have met the chopping blocks... And the makers garantee them for life. 3nodding Most of what's in that picture are made by a guy named Kirby Renault (sp?), and anything he makes is literally INDESTRUCTABLE. Here's some more of the collection: And here is Seymor, a hand forged suit of full plate, weighing in at close to 120lbs... And some sexy, extremely sharp blue steel. All of this stuff is the property of my friend Sam and/or his parents.

It balances about one quarter up the blade from the hilt, so it seems heavier to weild, but oh, man... Does it chop a mean cinder block. whee

Please excuse the newbishness of this question, but what does one look for in a good sword? I've always wanted a good, quality sword, but I've never known where to look? Can you recommend any to me? I am just afraid of getting ripped off.

hexdragon Please excuse the newbishness of this question, but what does one look for in a good sword? I've always wanted a good, quality sword, but I've never known where to look? Can you recommend any to me? I am just afraid of getting ripped off. Starting at the Society for Creative Anarchronism, or SCA is a good place. However, that requires that you go to an SCA event and purchase the sword. You can try to check e-bay, but if they don't mention who crafted the sword, it's a ripoff. If the sword comes from a company and not an individual, it's a ripoff. If they're selling you a sword for less than 200USD and you aren't personal friends with them, it's a ripoff. If you want a katana or similar style Japanese weapon and they offer it to you for less than 7,000USD, it's most likely a ripoff. In essence... You pretty much have to find a guy that sells them and get them first hand. But aforementioned SCA is your best bet. EDIT: Other things to look for: *life time waranty from the maker *Make sure there is an emblem (not a corporate logo) to identify the maker. This is proprietary. *If you're looking at swords, and see more than one identical one, they most likely are molded and thusly crap. *Make sure that you like the way it looks, but more importantly, the way it feels. Hey, the most important part of a sword is making sure that YOU LIKE IT.
