Does anyone here know anything about the Amazon Kindle book reader? I saw it on Charlie Rose, and I think I need one. I know that I am just getting pulled in by the hype, but it still looks cool. The main hesitation I have is with the price. It is currently $400.

I hadn't heard of this model in particular, but I've been looking into ebook readers lately, and it seems like a great idea. I would love to be able to carry around multiple books in something digital.
My drawback was money. The reader I was looking at was Sony's, and it wasn't that cheap, but it was more the cost of the ebooks that threw me off. They average somewhere between a hardback and a paperback, which I thought was kinda crappy since it's cheaper to produce a digital file.
$400 does seem pretty hefty for what it is, but compared to what people pay for mp3 players, it's not surprising. The high price will probably lower overall sales. E-readers don't have the quite the hype an Ipod does after all, and fewer people read with each generation so I doubt it will fly off the shelves D:
Now that I am reading more about this Kindle, I'm liking the $10 book thing, and the ability to add your own material, etc. Nice features... Free Internet connection? Maybe it will have the hype after all... Now I want one too.

I would like to see what the screen looks like. For a while I was reading short stories from the net on my Palm, but reading on that tiny screen got old quickly. It is also a bummer that you can't share the books, like one might loan out a favorite story. I wonder can you back it up on your PC? I know that Amazon will keep track of what you own, so the can resend titles for you, but it sure would be nice to have your own backups. What if you lost the devise?

I love the idea of having an E-reader, if the redout is quality. I keep a lot of artbooks in PDF format, I wonder if it could handle that... I also wonder about built in anti-piracy features. I'd hate to be thwarted by something I paid a lot for.

It doesn't read PDF, the file would have to be converted and e-mailed to the device. The more that I think about it, the more I think I should wait and see.

I'd wait untill something like a protable PDF player came out, personally. A text device isn't a bad thing, and a cool idea, but a bit limited for my needs.

Another thing that has warning lights a blazing, is the fact that it is a proprietary Amazon reader. What happens when Amazon decides to pull the plug?

GOOD POINT. Stand alone systems are always a requirement when making a major electronics purchase.

Very true. Amazon could see it tank and just pull out...
I for see in the near future a device like this that is in color, allows many formats, and surfs the web. Everything is merging into smaller, more efficient devices so it's often better to wait a few years.
Eventually, our cellphones will be our laptops biggrin I can't wait for that day.
