So I came up with a list of what we know for sure about the monster:
1. it's freakin' huge, like Godzilla sized. 2. It's aquatic( tore the head off of the Statue of Liberty, plus NYC is partly on an island. 3. It's roar is low and rumbling, not like any other monster 4. It has at least three claws on it's appendage/arms ( movie poster claw marks, etc.) 5. It will have littler creatures that come off of it (confirmed fact). 6. It may have some sort of breath weapon/ power (causing that giant explosion with massive "meteorites" falling from the sky) 7. It is not a robot ("it's big, it's alive!" ) 8. The monster is not from another series, so not godzilla, gigan, King Kong, Zilla, etc. (TOHO announced that the last Godzilla Series movie until 2013 or so will be Godzilla 3-D to the Max in late 2007) 9. It's not the "smoke Monster" from Lost. (c'mon, a several hundred foot tall cloud of roaring smoke?) 10. I have yet to find stills to fully confirm this, but it appears that the monster can actually be seen twice in the two released trailers. In the first one, when everyone's outside, after the head of the statue of liberty is thrown, they look back down the street, and you can see something that appears to be from a living creature moving across the street, but the whole image lasts less than a full second. In the second movie, there appears to be a slight view of something that looks like some kind of creature when the army is shooting at it.

Already got a screencap off the second trailer. Here it is. Second image, between the buildings. Honestly, that's the best picture I could get off of it.

Thank you so much for finding these! The second image, the one from the first trailer, looks an aweful lot like the American Godzilla's head, doesn't it?

Actually that image is indeed from the second trailer, after the soldiers are shooting hectically (at nothing, if you think about it, seeing as the monster is at least four blocks away) but it certainly does have a lot of Godzilla-like aspects. Most notably is the seemingly bipedal body. It's hard to be sure, but from that image there's nothing to support the popular theory of an elongated body. In fact, it seems pretty well upright to me. Scale is absolutely massive, though. King Kong, in the original and the remake, was reported to be about four stories tall, or forty feet. Godzilla has been depicted as anywhere from 200 to 400 feet tall, and my guess would be that the Cloverfield monster is at least in the 300 range, or 30 stories high.

Nice grab! All right, folks, let's analyze the crap out of that, just like J.J. would want us to!
EDIT: Just watching it, I can see parts moving like a sort of exoskeleton, or some sort of armor. I'm thinking it's a crustacean of some kind, now. Possibly reptilian, but it definitely looks like some sort of whale/ crab mix to me.
I think I'll have to take another look at the recipe image. If that kanji in question is in fact crab and not nectar as I've been thinking, that could explain some things.

Oh, my bad on the trailer then, sorry. The bipedal body seems right, but then again almost all Kaiju(giant monsters) are bipedal, and JJ Abrams is probably just sticking with the tradition, despite having G technology. I can clearly see at least three claws on the hands, but the mouth on the head portion appears to be almost toothless( or at least has too small of teeth to be seen that far away). Scale is definitely huge, 40 to 50 meters at least. Just a note though on the King Kong reference: King Kong is 25 ft high. They specifically said this in the remake of the movie. He was 200 feet high in Godzilla Vs. King Kong though.

I don't think the explosion was caused by an ability of the monster, in the second trailer it talks about a capsizing oil tankar. That's most likely the source of the explosion.
Also, in the five minute snippit of the movie, it shows the ground breaking apart right down the road and then passing the store that they are in, which is then followed by a man saying
"Rob, I saw it, it's alive"
Which is followed by the windows exploding and the end of the five minute special.
I think this creature or it's children have the ability to burrow under ground.
Also, is it impossible for there to be more than one species of monster in this movie? Becuase so far there has been evidence that this thing can burrow under ground, live in the ocean, fly, go super fast, cause firey explosions, and it also shows parasitic features.
Further evidence leading to multiple monsters is the fact that the statue's head flew from a decent distance and in a 10-15 second time period, the monster was already near the head.
Also, the statue of liberty looses it's head after the huge explosion in the city.
This thing also has to be pretty strong to hit the statues head as far as it did. That or it carried it into the city and then threw it (unlikely)

A lot of folks think it's a whale, and after doing some reading on sites like slusho.jp, I'm beginning to think so too. Oh, and when I did a search for cloverfield on photobucket I found this. (not sure if anyone else has posted this...) http://s188.photobucket.com/albums/z288/chinoguy08/?action=view¤t=1390694335_f85169d353.jpgWhether or not this is the actual monster, I'm not sure. However, it does seem to fit the descriptions mentioned above, and with the background story from slusho in mind, I beginning to believe in the whale theory more and more.

Quote: I don't think the explosion was caused by an ability of the monster, in the second trailer it talks about a capsizing oil tankar. That's most likely the source of the explosion. That, or there could be pandemonium happening in the city where the monster entered in at.
Quote: Also, in the five minute snippit of the movie, it shows the ground breaking apart right down the road and then passing the store that they are in, which is then followed by a man saying "Rob, I saw it, it's alive" This leads me to believe that this group of friends knows what the hell is attacking the city. Why else would they what they said?
Quote: Which is followed by the windows exploding and the end of the five minute special. Mabye, it's calls are like Rodan's from Godzilla, they can destroy things.

Becuase so far there has been evidence that this thing can burrow under ground, live in the ocean, fly, go super fast, cause firey explosions, and it also shows parasitic features. Well, in one of the trailers, the group is running through and a tunnel and looking behind themselves and you hear a type of scurrying noise of some sort. That may be it's offspring or something other chasing them.

I think the monster wasn't underground when the smoke cloud was coming towards them. In the second trailer in the background of the smoke cloud you can see the the building (that the monster passed by) the lights go out then the building falls.
