Samuese McCormack was excited.

Here he was, in a new city, a new country, doing his dream job, and loving every minute of it. He was working under a priest whom he liked and respected, and the congregation were, mostly, lovely. There were a couple of downsides, of course; working with that cranky old nun Sister Maria (Sam couldn’t help but sing the Sound of Music to himself every time he saw her), dealing with some of the strange and crazy homeless people who saw the church as nothing but a way to get free food and, often, a place to sleep, and of course, his least favourite thing about working as a deacon…confession.

Sam was a young and very open minded deacon. A lot of the other young deacons he had worked with in seminary school were the same, and thankfully the priest he was working under was too. It therefore drove him up the wall when he was forced to listen to the same woman three times a week moan about how her son was going to hell for being a homosexual, and how could she save his soul? People with various other qualms and worries about sin seemed to be queuing to talk to him, and he longed for some confession about affairs or something equally saucy.

For now, however, he was content, and hummed to himself quietly as he moved up and down the isles, collecting Bibles from the pews.

Tristan wasn’t a regular church goer, he honestly never would be and his sexuality was hardly accepted by the church. Truthfully and quite sadly, he just enjoyed the quiet. He pushed the large brown door open, slipping through hands in the pockets of his jeans and a white t-shirt loosely hanging on his torso. He had a black trucker hat perched on his head to the side, he didn’t know if it was offensive to the church to have it on, but his hair was a mess and that was far more important.

He slowly made his way down the centre of the isles, seeing a young priest collecting bibles gesturing a small smile toward him. He turned left at the end of the isles, where a large platform stood, with steps like a pyramid on top of it with many candles that were lit.

Tris took one from the side, lit it from another placing it on one of the steps. He mumbled to himself and then fiddled with his hat a little.

Sam glanced up as a young man entered the church looking uncertain, as though he wasn’t used to being in churches. After collecting the Bibles and tidying them away to their proper places, Sam returned to the main part of the church where the man had lit one of the candles, and now stood about looking unsure. Sam smiled. New customers were his speciality.

“Hi,” he greeted, moving down the isle towards where Tris stood. His voice was loud in the quiet of the church, his English accent echoing back slightly to him.

“Didn’t mean to startle you,” he said, smiling at Tris who had jumped slightly in surprise when Sam had first spoken.

“I just wondered if I can help?”

He turned toward the young priest, looking up at him and smiling back. He let his hands fall back into the pockets of his jeans, turning his back on the candles so he was now directly looking at Sam.

‘’No worries’’ he shifted his weight on to his other leg, looking around the church a little and contemplating why anyone would really join it.

He laughed a little looking back at Sam.

‘’I doubt it’’ He removed his left hand from his pocket, extending it toward Sam. ‘’I’m Tristan, and you are?’’

Sam grinned, grasping Tris’ hand in a firm handshake before releasing it. He sat casually on the back of one of the pews, stretching his long legs out in the isle.

“I’m Sam, the deacon here. I’ve not seen you around and you look a little lost, so I thought I should come and introduce myself.”

He picked a little at the grain of the wood with a short thumb nail before smoothing his hand across the wood.

“I’m new here myself, so I’ve not seen too many people in here who aren’t regulars. Or nuns,” he added as an afterthought.

Tris slipped his hat off, ruffling his hair a little before popping it back on adjusting it slightly to the side.

‘’Nice to meet you Sam. So, a Deacon, basically you’re the Priest’s b***h then?’’ he smirked, realizing he’d just used profanity in a church and did a quick a Hail Mary.

‘’I come in here occasionally, just for abit of piece and quiet, ya know?’’ he paused, before adding ‘’and to occasionally let loose a few shenanigans in confession.’’

He folded his arms across his chest, slouching slightly.

‘’England? Long way from home. What tempted you here?’’

Sam laughed loudly, amused at Tris’ classification of his job, and at his hasty Hail Mary.

“The church’s b***h is…one way to look at it, I admit. I’m a priest in training, essentially.”

He grinned and leaned forward, closer to Tris.

“I’ll tell you a secret; the church is only a building. No one will know if you swear.”

He cleared his throat and leaned back again.

“Bollocks!” he exclaimed, the word echoing around room. He glanced over his shoulder towards the door, making sure that Father Beck hadn’t snuck in. Although the elderly priest had been very lenient towards some of Sam’s views, he probably wouldn’t appreciate him swearing loudly.

“I thought confession would be more exciting than it is, actually,” he admitted, shrugging. “Maybe I just get all the wrong people.”

Sam rolled the sleeves of his black shirt up over his forearms to the elbow as he considered Sam’s question.

“I dunno. I guess there was an offer for this position I heard about while at seminary school, and I thought it would be…an adventure?” /He shrugged. “It sounds daft, I know. But it was either that or stay with my parents. My dad’s a priest, so I guess it’s a sort of family thing.”

‘’ True, but I still have my superstitions. Better safe then sorry I guess.’’

He smirked when Sam exclaimed Bollocks, unfolding his arms and putting them in his back pockets. It was like one of those moments in a film that are embarrassingly cringe worthy.

He laughed grinning and nodding.

‘’I’m sure you get a few bits of juicy gossip. Who’s sleeping with who and the like? I know there are a few things that I should confess too.’’

‘’Ah. If I’d taken the family route, I’d be farming right now, instead I’m jobless and crashing in a bed and breakfast.’’
