hilrious. As much as the "omg captialism has turn Che into a commodity" outrages you guys you have to realize that Che's status as a commodity image would not existed if Castro had not created a Che cult of personality. Same applies to Mao.

Same applies to Mao. Really, it's not all that different from the way we Americans are about the Founding Fathers. Or the way people of the medieval ages were quite fascinated by relics of saints. Unfortunately, the left has no Vatican-like authority to seize the relics of Che as their own.

I know some folks were happy about it because they want to obtain some of the hair for a few reasons. Firstly, the guy who previously owned the hair claimed he knew exactly where Che was burried - some time ago, Cuba grabbed some bones out of a shallow grave on Bolivia - which they think are Che's, this hair (and this guys supposed knowledge) could prove whether or not those bones (or the hair + and CIA guy) are incorrect.
Otherwise I just think it's kind of morbid - though I remember reading that the same guy also has some of JFK's hair.
I would also like to point out that Che likely *doesn't* have a cult of personality anywhere except amongst the youth of this country. Admiration is not a cult of personality, even looking to the past for leadership isn't a cult of personality. A cult of personality arises when a person portrays themselves (or the creater of the cult portrays a person) as being god-like, infalliable, and beyond criticism. For instance, Stalin's cult was a near religion with him as the messonic figure (and Lenin as a sort of Moses) which required him to be infalliable and beyond criticism "The time of the cult was such that the position of all below Stalin was to listen and praise him." - NS Khrushchev

This hair thing just freaks me out. Why would anyone want a lock of someone's hair? Granted, it's the hair of someone who is famous and utterly awesome... but... hair!?
Really...
it's like selling water... Oh wait... they do that too... sell water.... damn capitalists...
But whatever. What really pisses me off is that 'che on buttons and bags' thing. It would've been okay if the buttons and bags became famous because of che's ideology... but half of the people who use these che merchandise don't even know who 'che' is. It's disgusting. It's so contradictory and so disrespectful and so... ugh...

Well actually, Lenin's face was on ink wells and cigarette cartons back in the Stalin days. So this isn't really unusual. Hero worship happens when people do great things or at least things that seem great. Yes, I see the irony, but it isn't like they dug him up or something. We need to remember people for their actions and be sure to remember the flaws of mortals (Muslims like myself concider Moses, Jesus and Muhhamad (pbwt) to have made misteaks in their lifetimes.).
By the way, Fidel did seize the body of El Che after he was executed in Bolivia.

Lenin's cult was more or less propegated by Stalin and Khrushchev (Khrushchev more or less to dull Stalin's cult and to set up his own minicult making him out to be Lenin's true successor)
Anyways. I would like to point out that the bones that the PCC recovered are not, with 100% certainty, Che's - which is part of the reason why the Cuban government would like to get some of this hair to do DNA analysis.

Che was scum.
He was a petty bourgeois radical democrat... nothing more. When Cuba finally got help from the SU they had to get rid of the Cuban Trotskyists... Which Che did. In one instance he was present at the raiding of a printing house hwere they smashed the plates for Trotsky's The Revolution Betrayed, one of the greatest works analysing the SU and the nature of its state.
