I need some advice choosing the best media player for my needs. emo For the past couple of years I've been using iTunes, and it's served me satisfactorily for the most part. Lately I've been having problems with it, and I'm thinking of switching to a different program. My gripes: - Incorrect tagging. Certain parts of my library "freeze up," and the only way I can do tag editing is to cd burn and then re-import the disc as separate files. - There are certain albums iTunes refuses to recognize. They can be burned to discs to make working cds, but they won't add to the library. - Every once and a while, my library source becomes corrupted and all my files have to be re-added. Not only does this take a few hours, but I lose all individual track information, ie tag edits, play count, ratings, etc.
A number of technology-savvy people have recommended alternate players, Winamp and Foobar being the most popular. I downloaded both, but Foobar is proving difficult for me to figure out, and I'm not incredibly fond of Winamp's elaborate layout.
What I want to know is: What is your media player of choice? Why do you prefer it? Etc.
And yes, I posted in the chatterbox because I have the strong suspicion people come here more than the off-topic subforum. surprised

If you select the classic skin, winamp is a lot cleaner and simpler. That's what I use on my pc, with iTunes on the Mac.

Winamp is very good, fast, and easy to use. It's good for organizing, renaming files correctly, ordering them, playlists, and works with an iPod if you have one and need it. It generally works with any file and doesn't freeze too much.

Yeah, I'm a Winamp guy too. Like Sinister said, you can probably use the classic skin if the regular one is a bit too elaborate. But I've hardly ever had any problems with it... you can re-tag everything easily on the spot and so on. I've never liked iTunes because of how it tries to control your music and iPod. Winamp really allows for much more personal freedom.

Also, I'm getting more used to winamp now, but some of the controls get on my nerves, and I hate the fact that it doesn't seem to shuffle ever. I'll probably keep iTunes around for its smart playlists and randomizer. THANX GUISE.

One time an album I downloaded wouldn't add itself to my library despite the fact that all the files were in .mp3 format, but I think maybe they actually are in .wma format and someone just changed the names or something. :/ Then again, I'm on a Mac, so if you're using a PC, that may have something to do with it.
