Running Away From Destiny (not sure about title)

Chapter 1: The Plan
Shortly before Voldemort knew anything about a prophecy, he had an idea. He wanted an heir, a son or daughter, to be his most faithful follower and continue on his work should he ever grow weary of it. The only question was who was worthy to bear his heir. He eventually chose a beautiful witch by the name of Bellatrix Lestrange. Bellatrix Lestrange was married, but that made her an even better choice, for her and her husband could raise the child for Voldemort. The arrangements were made and carried through perfectly. Now all they had to do was wait and see if Bellatrix was pregnant. Three months later, Severus Snape reported what he had heard of the prophecy and Voldemort pushed all thought of his heir to the back of his mind in his eagerness to kill the boy the prophesy was talking about. Soon after this Bellatrix became sure that she was pregnant, but did not want to tell her master for a fear that the baby might die in a miscarriage and he would be furious at her.

Then something happened that no one believed was possible. Voldemort died and Harry Potter became the Boy Who Lived. The very next day, November first, Voldemort and Bellatrix’s daughter was born. She was well cared for and the Lestranges decided to raise her to follow in her father’s footsteps. They took her with them when they went to torture the Longbottoms, hoping she would delight in their pain as her father would have. The Lestranges were arrested and an infant was found at the Longbottom’s house. It was assumed that the Lestranges had kidnapped her, killed her parents, and left her there. An elderly couple who worked at the Ministry of Magic took her in, since they had no children of their own. The only thing known about the beautiful child was the name embroidered on her blanket. In green loopy letters there was the name Nimue.

This child is now fourteen and attending Hogwarts. She is similar to her parents in several ways. She looks just like them, she is very intelligent, and she is very ambitious and determined. She also takes after her father in that she can always tell when someone is lying to her and, though she hasn’t told anyone, she is a parseltongue. She shares her mother’s quality of being incredibly loyal and she has quite a temper. There is one major difference between her and her parents: she is in Gryffindor. She despises the Dark Arts, and as even befriended a certain Ginny Weasley. She has no idea that she is Voldemort’s only daughter, nor does anyone else. Not even Voldemort, who has recently come back, knows of her. The only two people who know that she is indeed Voldemort’s heir are locked up in Azkaban. This is where our story begins.

Chapter 2: The Nightmare
Nimue tossed back and forth in her four poster bed in her dormitory. She yelled and the red-headed girl in the bed next to her bolted upright in bed. Ginny Weasley rubbed the sleep from her eyes then went over to Nimue. She shook her gently.

“Nimue, Nim, wake up. You’re having a nightmare,” Ginny whispered soothingly. Nimue thrashed out of her grip and moaned. “Come on Nim, wake up. It’s just a dream.” Ginny kept shaking Nimue until she woke up. Her eyes shot open and she grabbed Ginny’s hand.

“What happened?” she whispered to Ginny. She had a wild, scared look in her eyes and her hair was rumpled.

“You had a nightmare and you yelled and woke me up. Are you okay?”

“I think so. Thanks for waking me up. That was a horrible dream.”

“No problem,” Ginny replied with a smile, “I’m going back to bed, we still have a couple hours until breakfast.” Ginny went over to her bed and pulled the scarlet hangings shut. Nimue watched Ginny, then rolled over and stared blankly at the stone wall. She couldn’t shake the feeling of horror the nightmare had given her. She had dreamt that she was running, running as fast as she could because she knew if whatever was chasing her caught her she would die. For a while in the dream Nimue didn’t know what she was running from, and then she glanced over her shoulder and yelled. That must have been what woke Ginny up. She had yelled because Voldemort himself was chasing her. He was terrifying. He had almost white, waxy skin and red, snakelike eyes. His nose was just slits and he had no hair. He was chasing her and had raised his wand. Nimue saw him start to form the words “Avada Kedavra,” but Ginny had woke her up before he had finished. Nimue tried to forget about the dream but it has been so realistic. After a while, she got up and went to the bathroom to take a shower, hoping the hot water would calm her down.

Nimue had always been called beautiful by her parents. She used to think it was something all parents said to the kids, and took no notice of it. Her parents’ friends would always call her beautiful as well. Then she got to school, and boys started calling her beautiful. Nimue started to think that maybe her parents weren;t just being parents, and that she was actually beautiful. Though, she never let it get to her head, Nimue knew she was beautiful. She had thick, shining, jet black, hair that fell in waves almost to her waist. Nimue had a very delicate, pale, pretty face and very dark deep brown eyes. She was tall for her age and slender, with a small chest and a narrow waist. She was younger that most of the students in her year, but she didn’t look like it. Nimue got plenty of attention from boys, she had had a couple of boyfriends, but she was currently single. Nimue wasn’t a flirt and preferred guy friends to boyfriends.

She turned the water on and quickly undressed and jumped in. The water felt good, and she tried to forget about Voldemort. She knew he was back and getting stronger but she didn’t like to think about it. After about thirty minutes, Nimue stepped out of the bathroom, much calmer and slightly wrinkly from the water. The sun was starting to rise so she slipped on her school robes. She grabbed her school bag and bounded down the steps to the common room to wait for Ginny.

“So what was that nightmare about?” Ginny asked Nimue at breakfast. Nimue paused, her fork filled with food.

“Voldemort,” she said simply and shoved the food in her mouth. Ginny winced at his name. Nimue smiled and swallowed. “You really need to get over that whole name thing.” Ginny glared at her.

“Everyone in the whole wizarding word calls him You-Know-Who except you,” Ginny paused then added as an afterthought, “Well some of the Order does, and Harry.” Nimue smiled knowingly, she knew Ginny still had a crush on Harry, even though she was dating Michael Corner.

“I’d rather be like Harry and the Order and the rest of the wizarding world,” Nimue replied, then shoveled more food in her mouth. Nimue had always called Voldemort by his name; she thought being afraid of a name was stupid. She had just always said Voldemort, even if her parents didn’t. Nimue just wasn’t afraid of saying “Voldemort.”

“You know you eat like my brother,” Ginny said.

“Ron?” Ginny nodded. “That’s insulting!” Ginny laughed and they both looked down the table at Ron, who happened to be shoving a huge forkful of food into his mouth at that exact moment. They cracked up and Ron, Harry and Hermoine looked at them.

“Wha oo augh bou?” Ron said with his mouth full of food. That made the laugh harder. The three looked at Ginny and Nimue, puzzled. Nimue stopped laughing long enough to get a few words out.

“Ron, has anyone ever told you to take smaller bites?” Hermoine and Harry laughed. Ron swallowed.

“Umm…Hermoine might have mentioned it once, or twice, or about fifty times,” Ron joked. They all laughed some more and Nimue wished there would be more carefree moments like this. Ever since Harry had came out of the maze clutching Cedric’s dead body, carefree moments had been few and far between. Nimue was constantly fighting with her parents all summer because they refused to admit Voldemorte was back. When she got to school it hadn’t been much better. Ginny was less cheerful than usual because she was worried about her family. Her parents and two of her older brothers were in the Order of the Phoenix, and Ginny was scared one of them would get hurt or die. Plus, they had the worst Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher ever. Nimue hated Umbridge, especially after she heard about how mean Umbridge was to Harry, who already had enough to deal with. Nimue wasn’t really close to Harry, but she felt sorry for him. She knew he didn’t like being the center of attention all the time, and that he’d much rather be left alone.

“So what classes do we have today Gin,” Nimue asked Ginny. Ginny took her schedule out of her bag.

“Ugh, History of Magic, Potions, and double Defense Against the Dark Arts,” Ginny replied with a grimace. Nimue groaned.

“Sounds like it’s going to be a spiffy day,” she said sarcastically. Ginny nodded and they gulped down the rest of their breakfast in silence.

Chapter 3: The Meeting
The Gryffindor fourth years filed out of Umbridge’s classroom yawning and groaning. They had just suffered through a double lesson of doing nothing but reading the dull textbook.

“One more lesson like that and I might burn my book,” Nimue complained to Ginny. Ginny nodded and pulled Nimue into an empty classroom. “Wha—“ Nimue started to say but was interrupted by Ginny covering her mouth with her hand.

“Wait a second, I don’t want to be overheard,” Ginny whispered. She muttered a charm to make no one be able to hear inside the room and then took her hand off Nimue’s mouth. “There. Now, Hermoine told me about something the other day that I think you might be interested in. Since all our DADA lessons are rubbish and You-Know-Who’s out there we really need to learn to defend ourselves.”

“When are you going to start saying Vol---” Nimue started but Ginny cut her off again.

“Hermoine convinced Harry to teach us jinxes and things, stuff that will be useful in the real world,” Nimue’s eyes sparkled with excitement, “She thinks we should start our own group to learn about DADA,” Ginny finished.

“Wicked, I’m in!”

“Good, we’re going to meet tomorrow, since it’s a Hogsmede weekend, at the Hog’s Head.” Ginny smiled and looked excited, as did Nimue.

“That would be so fun! I want to really learn, not just read about defense spells. And of course you want to spend more time with Harry,” Nimue said. Ginny glared at her.

“I am dating Michael! I gave up on Harry a while ago,” Ginny responded angrily.

“You just keep telling yourself whatever you need to Gin, I’m going to get dinner,” Nimue said with a smirk. She turned and walked out the door. Ginny rolled her eyes but followed.

“I’m coooolld,” Nimue whined to Ginny as they walked down a Hogsmede street. “Where is this meeting again?”

“Stop whining Nim, the meeting’s at the Hog’s Head remember?” Ginny responded teasingly. Nimue nodded and pulled her cloak tighter around her. They hurried down the road.

“Where the hell is this place anyway?”

“Just follow me.” Ginny responded. “There it is!” Ginny pointed at a shabby looking bar. They entered it and Nimue breathed a sigh of relief. She hated the cold; she was always getting cold, even when others said it wasn’t cold at all. Nimue looked around the bar and was shocked and the amount of students that had come for the meeting. Nimue sat down by Ginny and listened to the plans being made about what she loved best: learning about how to fight the Dark Arts.

“Night Nimue,” Ginny whispered before she pulled the scarlet curtains around her. Nimue smiled and slumped back on her pillow.

“Good Night Ginny, I can’t wait until D.A. starts,” she whispered back so the other girls in their dormitory wouldn’t hear. She shut her eyes and floated off to sleep.

Nimue was laughing maniacally as she raised her wand in the air. It wasn’t really Nimue though, she was older and frightening looking. Her eyes were cruel and hardened. A man that had the same cruel glint in his eyes was standing next to older-Nimue, sparks shooting from his wand. There was another man, standing beside him, who looked positively insane. Screams were coming from somewhere but Nimue couldn’t see where. Nimue suddenly realized she was seeing everything from a strange position on the floor. She could only see the men and the woman, nothing else.

“Crucio,” shrieked the woman, and more screams filled the air. “Tell us everything you know, Longbottom, and maybe you won’t have to see you wife suffer anymore.” Nimue heard a baby crying somewhere, and she began to cry too. She heard cold laughter and more screams of pain. Then it was all over, the men and older-Nimue left. Nimue stopped crying, when she saw a plump little toddler waddle over to her. He had short brown hair and a round face.

“Mummy? Daddy?” he cried.

Nimue bolted upright in her bed, trembling. There as a cold sweat all over her body from that horrible nightmare. She was panting slightly and she felt like she might puke. She could still hear screams ringing in her ears. She pulled the hangings back and stumbled to the bathroom. She stood over the sink and splashed cold water in her face.

“It’s okay,” she told herself, “it was just a dream. A terrible, horribly realistic nightmare that isn’t real.” Then she turned to the toilet and retched. She took a towel, wet it with warm water, and wiped the barf off her mouth. Nimue tried to stop shaking, but she couldn’t help it. She was freezing cold and she could still hear the horrible screams and the woman’s cruel laughter. “That couldn’t have been me. Even if she looked like me, I would never do that. I would never perform and unforgivable curse on someone like that,” Nimue said to her pale reflection. “Never.”
