Bill Gates

Bill Gates was born in Seattle, Washington, on October 28, 1955. His family has a history of involvement in business, politics, and community service. In elementary school, he was better than all his classmates in nearly all subjects, especially math and science.
In 1970, he was sent to Lakeside, a private school known for its strong academic environment. This is where Bill Gates was first introduced to computers and where he became good friend with Paul Allen another computer whiz. Soon, they both became computer programmers. Bill Gates got a job working out computer bugs and developing computer programs for his school.
He and Paul also founded a company called the Traf-o-data, which recorded traffic data for their own town; the company was very profitable for the two young entrepreneurs. In 1974, he attended Harvard. While at Harvard he created a programming code for Altair called BASIC and studied pre-law; however, he had a hard time adapting to college and before finishing his undergraduate studies he dropped out and founded Microsoft in 1975 out of his family’s garage.
In the 80’s Microsoft got its big break. Bill Gates and Paul Allen were asked to make an operation system for IBM. So Bill bought an existing operation system from a Seattle company. He improved it and licensed it to IBM and other companies who made IBM clones; this software was called MS-DSO. Through the sell of MS-DSO, Microsoft became a big player in the computer software industry.
By 1985, Microsoft went public. That means they split the company into shares for sale on the stock market. In the 80’s came spreadsheets, word processing system; Windows came out in ‘85 and it was a success because it allowed multitasking, had lots of graphics, and was user-friendly. In the 90’s, came several new updated versions of Windows, new features included CD technology, and computer networking. Gates created MSN and an internet provider and put them on all Windows for free. He also founded Corbis, which has the largest variety of graphics.
In 1994, Bill Gates married an employee, Melinda French. They currently have two children. In 2000, his wife and he created the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that operates with over 30 billion dollars US. The foundation works towards eradicating poverty, promoting global health, and providing learning opportunities for underprivileged children in the United States of America.
Bill Gates, as co-founder and CEO of Microsoft, became the richest man in the world, with a personal worth of over 56 billion dollars US. According to Forbes magazine, he is one of the most influential people of the 20th century, Gates has received three honorary doctorates, from the Nyenrode Business University, Breukelen, the Netherlands in 2000, the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden in 2002 and Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan in 2005. The same year, Gates was named an honorary Knight by Queen Elizabeth II, and he, his wife and Bono (from the pop music group U2) were nominated by the Times as “Persons of the Year” for their charitable work.
I chose Bill Gates because I like computers and the Windows technology made school work and working easier for people. I also chose him because he recently invested a lot of money to create a foundation to help poor children and provide them with education.
