Beginner's Information
New to Wicca but don't know where to start?
The first thing you should do is ask yourself: is this the path for me? And really think about why Wicca appeals to you. I can tell you now - if you watched 'The Craft' and thought it would be cool to cast a few spells and curse a few enemies...then stop. Wicca isn't about that.
Infact it's far from it.
Wicca is a loving and giving religion. It's a path that requires you to really 'know' yourself and nature. Everyone will have their own reasons and thoughts on what Wicca is to them, but the thing all Wiccans have in common is: not just a love of nature, but a connection to it. We're not just a bunch of environmentalists who want to save nature. We're a bunch of environmentalists who see ourselves as 'a part' of nature. We're in tune with the oceans and skies and land. We are nature. You'll also find that all Wiccans acknowledge some form of diety, usually as the God and Goddess, though traditions and beliefs do vary. Our Lord and Lady are a part of us and nature.

If you decide you are interested in Wicca, then READ, READ, READ! Almost every Wiccan you ask will tell you this. You can never learn too much, and you'll never stop learning. Read books and websites, though always be aware that not everything you raed is accurate, and take everything with a grain of salt. Remember to THINK and apply your own logic and beliefs to what you're reading. If something doesn't sound right to you, then it probably isn't.
Of course, reading and learning will only get you so far. Always continue to read and learn but remember to learn other ways too. Meditate and take walks. Practice your craft. Appreciate and understand your environment. Learn to listen to nature. Saying a spell or chant won't get you too far if you don't understand why you're saying it. Calling the elements won't get you too far if you don't 'know' the elements. And doing a healing ritual won't get you too far if you don't tap into that energy that's all around us and know how to use it.
I suggest, as a way of 'getting started' and 'becoming more intune with your path', meditate and just spend time focusing on your senses. Light some candles and lay/sit there and just listen. Listen to everything around you. Become more aware of your surroundings yet at the same time separate. Understand that spiritual plane you're intouch with and just see how you feel. Sit outside for a little while and focus on the wind touching your skin. The different birds you hear. The traffic. The people. Any music. You'll feel more at balance with the world and feel that you're more aware of the energies around you.
Practice Tarot or some form of psychic concentration. Make a pendulum and practice with it. Though you may not actually wish to use these tools on your journey, just unlocking that psychic energy field around you (and no I don't mean so you can tell the future and whatever. I mean so you're just AWARE and conscious of it) will help you concentrate and become more motivated.
GETTING STARTED:
A lot of people say: how do I get started? But they don't want to hear: "read, read, read" or "meditate" or "take a walk through the woods/park". They want to hear: "do a spell" or "practice some chants". But that's not how to start. Like I said before, before you do practice a spell you need to know those energies and the basic beliefs. You need to understand what you're doing and the possible consequences. Just take it easy. If you want to hear: "Do a spell" then maybe Wicca isn't the path for you and you'd be more inclined towards Witchcraft. Though don't be fooled, witchcraft, true, is a part of Wicca (though differnt still), still needs you to know and respect nature, to know how to work with energies and understand it all.
People seem to have this idea that Wicca is this "magical" and "fantastic" thing where we study the occult and live free, alternative lifestyles - and maybe it is in a certain sense. But keep in mind that Wicca is a RELIGION, just like: Christianity, Budhism, Sikhism, Mormonism, Judaism, Hinduism, etc. And as a religion it is a serious faith and has a set of organised beliefs which, yes, may be considered a bit "alternative" because of the "Christianized mainstream" but it is still a lifestyle choice. A religion with set values and practices and celebrations. Don't get into it thinking it's just a "cool new thing".
Wiccans don't necessarily do magick. So stay away from the idea that Wicca is a religion where you have to cast a lot of spells. Wiccans honour nature. So GETTING STARTED doesn't necessarily mean performing a ritual or spell. How do you GET STARTED in any religion? Simply by believing in it. If you go about your everyday lifestyle and believe in the Goddess and God, then you have already GOTTEN STARTED.
MY PARENTS DON'T KNOW:
A lot of young Wiccans have the parent issue. Whether or not your parents know about your chosen religion or they're devoted Christians so don't accept it fullstop - you're not alone. So many Wiccans have this issue. So the best advice?
1.) Practice in secret until you leave home.
2.) Be honest and just tell your parents. Work it out from there.
3.) Educate your parents. Give them a book to read about Wicca. Encourage them to at least TRY to understand it. If not, tell them they're being ignorant. Or whatever..
THE ALTER?
"What do I do about an alter!"
If you're a Wiccan-in-secret, then maybe make an alter in your wardrobe or somewhere where your parents won't see it. Or just put one together whenever you need it - use a large-ish rock in your yard or a small table you can clear off easily. Use a peice of board even and have it on the ground. Be imaginative.
The most important thing about starting on a new religious path is: make sure you're doing it for the right reasons.
And don't be afraid to ask questions. Just follow your heart, think, always continue to learn and follow your intuition.
How do I become a Wiccan?
First you must look at your true intentions on wanting to be Wiccan. Are you doing it just so you can cast love spells and hex your enemies?
Wicca isn't just about spells, it's a very spiritual earth based religion, and keep in mind, it is a RELIGION and a BELIEFE. It's a way of life. Sometimes spells are ever rarely used.
If you feel that Wicca is the right path for you, I would suggest reading up on as much as possible, going to Wiccan sites, and looking for a local Wiccan meet up group in your area.
Some traditions believe that you can't be a Wiccan unless you're initiated, I myself, don't believe in this, but keep in mind, some Wiccans do, so don't be surprised if you get ridiculed and called "Fluffy" by some Wiccans.
Do you have to be born into Wicca to actually be one?
No, you don't have to be born into it. Not that many people actruly are. Those who are, are called Hereditary Wiccans, meaning their parent/s are Wiccan. A lot of traditions won’t christen an underage child into Wiccanism 'cause they're too young to understand or they might not want to be one when they're older. Also, just beacause your parent/s are wiccan, doesn't exactly make you wiccan, we are not born a certain religion, we dedicate ourselves when we grow up and learn about it.
What's the different between a Wicca and a Witchcraft?
Wicca: Is a religion, belief, and a way of life. It's has high ethics and guidelines, ex. Do what tho will, an it harm none, meaning, do as you wish, just as long as it doesn't harm anyone/thing, including yourself.
Witchcraft: Many Witches don't follow the same beliefs as Wiccans do. A lot of them are more into spells and such, or another religion. You don't have to be Wiccan to practise Witchcraft.
A Wiccan IS a Witch, but a Witch ISN'T a Wiccan.

is it true Wiccans perform rituals naked?
Yes, some do. To some it's more comfortable and feel more intuned with the Gods/Elements. If you don't feel comfortable, safe, trust the others, or you don't know the people you're with, keep your clothes on. You DON'T have to be naked, and if the other people are pressuring you to take off your clothes, I suggest leaving the group.
whats a Fluffy Bunny? And why do people keep calling me it??
A Fluffy Bunny is a person, who is ONLY gets into Wicca for spells, and to play with candles with a bunch of other like-minded people wearing all black in a circle. They also think that Wicca and Witchcraft is extremely positive and that anything negative is just wrong or doesn't exist in Wicca. Some also believe that they're fairies or something along those lines. Many are just into Wicca to be in a coven. Or to rebel against their Christian (or some other religion) upbringing and to piss of their parents.

The main reason some Wiccans wear black (if they're NOT a Goth of course) is 'cause the colour black has a lot of meaning, and it draws energies. First off, that's impossible. Nobody can tell you EVERYTHING they know, some Wiccans take an oath of silence, meaning, they're able to tell you basics, but somethings they just can't tell you. Some Wiccans find it to be quite rude to just get in their face with that question, especialy when there are already threads of information to already get you started. When asking questions, be MORE specific with them, you'll probably get more dirrect answers from thoes who can help. Most of all, be respectfull.
how do i find a teacher?do i need one?
When the time is right, the teacher will find you.
No, you don't really NEED one, working and studying by yourself is just fine. But if you're set on finding one, check out some sites, local groups, forums, and metaphical stores. Just be careful with meeting up with somebody off the internet, 70% of the time they aren't who they say they claim to be.
What's the difference between White and Black magic?
Intent- "White magic" is the label for things done with good intent, and "black magic" for those of bad intention. Wiccans acknowledge both the dark and light sides of life, and they embrace it. Keep in mind the rule of 3.
Where do Wiccans go when they die?
It all depends on what you belive, and what you were taught. Some belive in reincarnation, meaning when your psyical body dies, your spirit still lives on and is born again into something else, like an animal, plant, or another person. Others believe your spirit will go and live with the Gods in Summerland (aka Heaven) for all eternity. Or your spirit will come back to this wrelm and become a spirit guardian. It all depends on what tradition you are taught.
I've read many different books on Wicca and rituals, they all say different ways of doing things, how do I know which one is true and what's fake?
In Wicca, there is no set of way of going about things like rituals. If you find a couple of different rituals that both have the same intent, go with the one that seems to get your attention more and seem right for you.
Who wants to start a coven? / How do I start a coven?
Technically you can't start a coven unless you've got (are) a 3rd degree High Priest/ess to be in your coven. You may start a group of fellow Wiccans to study and such, but you can't just start one without one of those people. Unlike what movies say, you NEED a High Priest/ess to start a coven, or it technically won’t be one. ALSO don't be fooled into joining a "coven" that DOESN'T have a 3rd degree High Priest/ess.
Magic, Magick, Majik, Majic... what's the right spelling??
Magic is spelt "Magic". I think the spelling of magic like "Magick" or any other way is nonsense. People believe Alester Crowley spelt it with the K at the end to differentiate Witch Magic from Parlour Tricks.
Help! Somebody cast an evil spell/curse on me!! What do I do!?
A spell has as much power as you give it. If you don't believe it, nothing will happen. If you're hiding under your blanket thinking about it 24/7, you're giving it power, so stop thinking about it and ignore it. Heck, the other person is probly just ******** with you. If you're still paranoid, ask the God, Goddess, and elements to protect you.
HELP! I really want to be Wiccan, but my parents are against it! What should I do?!
First off, what are your intentions of wanting to become one? What do you hope to acomplish with being Wiccan? Second, you're your own person. You have the right to choose your religion. Literally, in many countries, there are actruly laws that state your freedom to choose your religion. But if you're parents threaten to kick you out of the house or disown you, and you're underage, I suggest holding off until you're legal age, 'cause then they can't say anything about it. You may still read up on it, just for information, they can't stop you from learning, just say it's for school or something.

What are Ritual Tools?
Ritual tools are used for many reasons. They aid us in focusing our concentration, and assist us in visualization exercises. Ritual tools can help us to quickly set the aura of a "world outside this world," and their symbolic meanings can give comfort during trying times.
One of the most important things to remember about ritual tools, however, is that they are not necessary! In a pinch, your finger works just fine. Most of all, never doubt the fertility and creativity of your own mind; in Magick, your most problematic issues will be the limitations you place upon intuition and imagination.
Are you a good Witch or a bad Witch?
When you ask if someone is a "good" Witch or a "bad" Witch, it is the same as asking someone if they are a "good" Presbyterian or a "bad" Presbyterian. There are good and bad people in every society and in every religion. When a person breaks the laws of society or the tenets of their religion, they are called to account for their actions. Do you worship Satan?
Satan is a part of the Christian and Muslim religions. Since pagans are neither Christian nor Muslim, Satan is not part of our deity structure at all.
We believe that each and every human being is completely responsible for his or her own actions. To us, evil is a choice, albeit a bad one, that a human might make, not an embodied entity to blame our actions upon.
If an individual chooses to do evil, most pagans believe they will be punished via the laws of karma or as a result of "cause and effect.". In other words, "What goes around usually comes around."
Many Witches and Wiccans believe in some form of reincarnation, that the results or karma of past deeds can follow a person from one life to the next. This may also help to explain why terrible things sometimes happen to wonderful people or why some people seem to have been born with certain skills and knowledge. Some pagans believe in an after-life spent in another plain of existence. Known as Summerland, Avalon, Valhalla or simply the "Other Side', they believe that they will be reunited here once again with friends and family.
So why do you use that "Satanic" symbol?
The pentagram, or five pointed star, is not Satanic. Pythagoras used it as a symbol of health and his followers wore them in order to recognize one another. In Medieval times, some Christian knights used the pentagram as their symbol. To modern Wiccans the pentagram means many things; The five points correspond to the elements Air, Earth, Fire and Water with the top point corresponding to "Spirit". The pentagram in a circle may also represent a human with their legs and arms outstretched, surrounded by universal wisdom or the "Goddess" - humankind at one with the environment. Many Witches and other pagan practitioners do not wear the pentacle at all, but have other symbols of special meaning to them. In some Wiccan traditions, the reversed pentagram is a symbol of "second degree" status - one who has been elevated from "initiate". To members of these traditions, the reversed pentagram is considered highly positive and has no connection to Satanism. A symbol is simply an image or mark in itself. It is the mind and the beliefs of the beholder which attribute to it a particular meaning.

Goddess NO! The nature of sacrifice is to give up something of one's own in order to gain something more important. Wiccans believe in the sanctity of all life. Do Witches and Wiccans cast spells?
Yes. Well, some do anyway. However, the term "spell" is widely misunderstood.
Spells, are somewhat like prayers and are used to create needed change in one's own life or the life of a loved one. Do you have ritual orgies?
These rumors come from our lack of taboos regarding sex. We have no rules which prohibit homosexuality, nudity or pre-marital sex. Sex as the generative force in nature is seen by most pagans as something utterly sacred. We feel that the physical act of love is to be approached with great respect and responsibility.
Aren't all Witches Women?
No. Neither are Wiccans or those in other pagan paths. Witches can be either men or women. The term "Warlock" is never used to describe a male Witch as it is considered to be a religious slur. "Warlock" is an old Scottish word meaning "traitor" or "oath-breaker". Men and Women alike can be Witches, Wiccans or pagans.
Why would anyone want to be a pagan, a Witch or Wiccan?
People are generally drawn to Wicca and other pagan paths for several reasons. Many women feel left out of more mainstream religions because of the lack of feminine divinity. For them, the Wiccan concept of the Goddess as Mother of all Living fills an empty space in their spiritual search. As a nature based religion, Witchcraft also appeals to those who feel a strong need to "get back to the Earth" and places a major importance on protecting the environment, which we are a part of, not apart from. People drawn to the mystical find pagan belief systems much more accommodating as we do not see anything unnatural about psychic ability or the use of magic to create needed changes in one's life. It gives us the freedom to make our own decisions about what is best for us.
How do you convert new Witches/Wiccans/pagans?
We don't. We feel that the attempted conversion of others is a form of religious bigotry. i.e. If one tries to convert another to his/her religion, s/he assumes that the other person's beliefs are not as valid as his/her own. We feel that all paths are equally valid as long as they do not infringe upon the basic civil rights or free will of another. According to our beliefs, it is up to the individual to choose his or her own path. We do not try to manipulate others into our way of thinking, we only try to educate others about our religion so that they may better understand us. We do, however try to help guide those who have already expressed an interest in the pagan belief systems or religions.
So what do Witches/Wiccans/pagans DO?
Pretty much what everybody does. We come from all walks of life. We raise families, go to work, throw steaks (or vegetables) on the "barbie" and hang out with our friends. We practice our religions and belief systems, celebrate our holidays with festivals and continue to study and explore our past while contemplating our futures.
Many covens and groups meet once a month to worship together under the moon. Pagans tend to hold ceremonies or "circles" out of doors as we feel that being with nature brings us closer to the divinity who creates it.
Some pagan beliefs may seem strange to those who have not heard much about them before. Pagans, on the other hand, are usually very well versed in the beliefs of other religions. They find the various religious systems interesting and often encourage their own children to learn about these other religions. Pagans believe in free will and free choice and that an educated choice is always better than blind obedience to any religion or dogma. We are not "against" other religions. We have simply made our choice to be pagan and we expect others to respect that choice as we respect theirs.
All that we ask is that we are allowed to practice our religion without prejudice or interference as is our right guaranteed here in the United States under the Constitution and as outlined within the constitutions of many other countries. The freedom to practice religion -or no religion-as you choose-whether it be Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist or Pagan-is the freedom to follow your spirit and your heart. This precious freedom must be defended, protected and treasured by all or it will no longer be guaranteed for anyone.

But keep in mind that Wicca is a RELIGION, just like: Christianity, Budhism, Sikhism, Mormonism, Judaism, Hinduism, etc. And as a religion it is a serious faith and has a set of organised beliefs which, yes, may be considered a bit "alternative" because of the "Christianized mainstream" but it is still a lifestyle choice. A religion with set values and practices and celebrations. Don't get into it thinking it's just a "cool new thing".
Wiccans don't necessarily do magick. So stay away from the idea that Wicca is a religion where you have to cast a lot of spells. Wiccans honour nature. So GETTING STARTED doesn't necessarily mean performing a ritual or spell. How do you GET STARTED in any religion? Simply by believing in it. If you go about your everyday lifestyle and believe in the Goddess and God, then you have already GOTTEN STARTED.
MY PARENTS DON'T KNOW:
A lot of young Wiccans have the parent issue. Whether or not your parents know about your chosen religion or they're devoted Christians so don't accept it fullstop - you're not alone. So many Wiccans have this issue. So the best advice?
1.) Practice in secret until you leave home.
2.) Be honest and just tell your parents. Work it out from there.
3.) Educate your parents. Give them a book to read about Wicca. Encourage them to at least TRY to understand it. If not, tell them they're being ignorant. Or whatever..
THE ALTER?
"What do I do about an alter!"
If you're a Wiccan-in-secret, then maybe make an alter in your wardrobe or somewhere where your parents won't see it. Or just put one together whenever you need it - use a large-ish rock in your yard or a small table you can clear off easily. Use a peice of board even and have it on the ground. Be imaginative.
The most important thing about starting on a new religious path is: make sure you're doing it for the right reasons.
And don't be afraid to ask questions. Just follow your heart, think, always continue to learn and follow your intuition.
How do I become a Wiccan?
First you must look at your true intentions on wanting to be Wiccan. Are you doing it just so you can cast love spells and hex your enemies?
Wicca isn't just about spells, it's a very spiritual earth based religion, and keep in mind, it is a RELIGION and a BELIEFE. It's a way of life. Sometimes spells are ever rarely used.
If you feel that Wicca is the right path for you, I would suggest reading up on as much as possible, going to Wiccan sites, and looking for a local Wiccan meet up group in your area.
Some traditions believe that you can't be a Wiccan unless you're initiated, I myself, don't believe in this, but keep in mind, some Wiccans do, so don't be surprised if you get ridiculed and called "Fluffy" by some Wiccans.
Do you have to be born into Wicca to actually be one?
No, you don't have to be born into it. Not that many people actruly are. Those who are, are called Hereditary Wiccans, meaning their parent/s are Wiccan. A lot of traditions won’t christen an underage child into Wiccanism 'cause they're too young to understand or they might not want to be one when they're older. Also, just beacause your parent/s are wiccan, doesn't exactly make you wiccan, we are not born a certain religion, we dedicate ourselves when we grow up and learn about it.
What's the different between a Wicca and a Witchcraft?
Wicca: Is a religion, belief, and a way of life. It's has high ethics and guidelines, ex. Do what tho will, an it harm none, meaning, do as you wish, just as long as it doesn't harm anyone/thing, including yourself.
Witchcraft: Many Witches don't follow the same beliefs as Wiccans do. A lot of them are more into spells and such, or another religion. You don't have to be Wiccan to practise Witchcraft.

Yes, some do. To some it's more comfortable and feel more intuned with the Gods/Elements. If you don't feel comfortable, safe, trust the others, or you don't know the people you're with, keep your clothes on. You DON'T have to be naked, and if the other people are pressuring you to take off your clothes, I suggest leaving the group.

A Fluffy Bunny is a person, who is ONLY gets into Wicca for spells, and to play with candles with a bunch of other like-minded people wearing all black in a circle. They also think that Wicca and Witchcraft is extremely positive and that anything negative is just wrong or doesn't exist in Wicca. Some also believe that they're fairies or something along those lines. Many are just into Wicca to be in a coven. Or to rebel against their Christian (or some other religion) upbringing and to piss of their parents.

First off, that's impossible. Nobody can tell you EVERYTHING they know, some Wiccans take an oath of silence, meaning, they're able to tell you basics, but somethings they just can't tell you. No, you don't really NEED one, working and studying by yourself is just fine. But if you're set on finding one, check out some sites, local groups, forums, and metaphical stores. Where do Wiccans go when they die?
It all depends on what you belive, and what you were taught. Some belive in reincarnation, meaning when your psyical body dies, your spirit still lives on and is born again into something else, like an animal, plant, or another person. Others believe your spirit will go and live with the Gods in Summerland (aka Heaven) for all eternity. Or your spirit will come back to this wrelm and become a spirit guardian. It all depends on what tradition you are taught.
I've read many different books on Wicca and rituals, they all say different ways of doing things, how do I know which one is true and what's fake?
In Wicca, there is no set of way of going about things like rituals. If you find a couple of different rituals that both have the same intent, go with the one that seems to get your attention more and seem right for you.
Who wants to start a coven? / How do I start a coven?
Technically you can't start a coven unless you've got (are) a 3rd degree High Priest/ess to be in your coven. You may start a group of fellow Wiccans to study and such, but you can't just start one without one of those people. Unlike what movies say, you NEED a High Priest/ess to start a coven, or it technically won’t be one. ALSO don't be fooled into joining a "coven" that DOESN'T have a 3rd degree High Priest/ess.

A spell has as much power as you give it. If you don't believe it, nothing will happen. If you're hiding under your blanket thinking about it 24/7, you're giving it power, so stop thinking about it and ignore it. Heck, the other person is probly just ******** with you. If you're still paranoid, ask the God, Goddess, and elements to protect you.
HELP! I really want to be Wiccan, but my parents are against it! What should I do?!
First off, what are your intentions of wanting to become one? What do you hope to acomplish with being Wiccan? Second, you're your own person. You have the right to choose your religion. Literally, in many countries, there are actruly laws that state your freedom to choose your religion. But if you're parents threaten to kick you out of the house or disown you, and you're underage, I suggest holding off until you're legal age, 'cause then they can't say anything about it. You may still read up on it, just for information, they can't stop you from learning, just say it's for school or something.

What are Ritual Tools?
Ritual tools are used for many reasons. They aid us in focusing our concentration, and assist us in visualization exercises. Ritual tools can help us to quickly set the aura of a "world outside this world," and their symbolic meanings can give comfort during trying times.
One of the most important things to remember about ritual tools, however, is that they are not necessary! In a pinch, your finger works just fine. Most of all, never doubt the fertility and creativity of your own mind; in Magick, your most problematic issues will be the limitations you place upon intuition and imagination.
Are you a good Witch or a bad Witch?
When you ask if someone is a "good" Witch or a "bad" Witch, it is the same as asking someone if they are a "good" Presbyterian or a "bad" Presbyterian. Wiccans adhere to the Rede, "An it harm none, do as ye will." Witches, Druids and other pagan belief systems and religions have their own ethical standards. There are good and bad people in every society and in every religion. When a person breaks the laws of society or the tenets of their religion, they are called to account for their actions. To judge a person as either "good" or "bad" based upon nothing more than their religious preference alone has a label, too. It is called bigotry.
Do you worship Satan?
Satan is a part of the Christian and Muslim religions. Since pagans are neither Christian nor Muslim, Satan is not part of our deity structure at all.
We believe that each and every human being is completely responsible for his or her own actions. To us, evil is a choice, albeit a bad one, that a human might make, not an embodied entity to blame our actions upon.
If an individual chooses to do evil, most pagans believe they will be punished via the laws of karma or as a result of "cause and effect.". In other words, "What goes around usually comes around."
Many Witches and Wiccans believe in some form of reincarnation, that the results or karma of past deeds can follow a person from one life to the next. This may also help to explain why terrible things sometimes happen to wonderful people or why some people seem to have been born with certain skills and knowledge. It may also explain why some people seem to lead a 'charmed" life.
Some pagans believe in an after-life spent in another plain of existence. Known as Summerland, Avalon, Valhalla or simply the "Other Side', they believe that they will be reunited here once again with friends and family.
So why do you use that "Satanic" symbol?
The pentagram, or five pointed star, is not Satanic. Pythagoras used it as a symbol of health and his followers wore them in order to recognize one another. In Medieval times, some Christian knights used the pentagram as their symbol. To modern Wiccans the pentagram means many things; The five points correspond to the elements Air, Earth, Fire and Water with the top point corresponding to "Spirit". The pentagram in a circle may also represent a human with their legs and arms outstretched, surrounded by universal wisdom or the "Goddess" - humankind at one with the environment. Many Witches and other pagan practitioners do not wear the pentacle at all, but have other symbols of special meaning to them. In some Wiccan traditions, the reversed pentagram is a symbol of "second degree" status - one who has been elevated from "initiate". To members of these traditions, the reversed pentagram is considered highly positive and has no connection to Satanism. A symbol is simply an image or mark in itself. It is the mind and the beliefs of the beholder which attribute to it a particular meaning.
Do you do blood sacrifice?
Goddess NO! The nature of sacrifice is to give up something of one's own in order to gain something more important. Wiccans believe in the sanctity of all life. Most pagans believe that animals are part of the same natural cycle of life as humans are. Witches have long been associated with animal companions known as "familiars." Do Witches and Wiccans cast spells?
Yes. Well, some do anyway. However, the term "spell" is widely misunderstood.
Spells, are somewhat like prayers and are used to create needed change in one's own life or the life of a loved one. But while prayers are a petition to an external Deity to create the change, most Witches and Wiccans believe that Deity is present in everything, including ourselves. Spells, then, are the channeling of our own divine selves, our own energies, to create the change.
Spells such as those which use love magic to gain the attention of a specific individual, or curses, are considered "manipulative". Most Wiccans believe that anything manipulative-that goes against the free will of another-is considered wrong. Many other pagan paths have similar codes of conduct based upon the tenets of their tradition or belief and almost all believe that the responsibility for their actions will lie with them.
Are Witchcraft or Wicca cults?
A cult by definition means "adherents of an exclusive system of religious beliefs and practices". So in that sese, yes, Wicca is a cult. Any religion is a cult because they are an organised group with members who retain the same or similar school of thought. Is it a cult in the hollywood/gothic sense like you see in the movies? No.
Do you have ritual orgies?
These rumors come from our lack of taboos regarding sex. We have no rules which prohibit homosexuality, nudity or pre-marital sex. Sex as the generative force in nature is seen by most pagans as something utterly sacred. We feel that the physical act of love is to be approached with great respect and responsibility.
Aren't all Witches Women?
No. Neither are Wiccans or those in other pagan paths. Witches can be either men or women. The term "Warlock" is never used to describe a male Witch as it is considered to be a religious slur. "Warlock" is an old Scottish word meaning "traitor" or "oath-breaker". Men and Women alike can be Witches, Wiccans or pagans.
Why would anyone want to be a pagan, a Witch or Wiccan?
People are generally drawn to Wicca and other pagan paths for several reasons. Many women feel left out of more mainstream religions because of the lack of feminine divinity. For them, the Wiccan concept of the Goddess as Mother of all Living fills an empty space in their spiritual search. As a nature based religion, Witchcraft also appeals to those who feel a strong need to "get back to the Earth" and places a major importance on protecting the environment, which we are a part of, not apart from. People drawn to the mystical find pagan belief systems much more accommodating as we do not see anything unnatural about psychic ability or the use of magic to create needed changes in one's life. It gives us the freedom to make our own decisions about what is best for us.
How do you convert new Witches/Wiccans/pagans?
We don't. We feel that the attempted conversion of others is a form of religious bigotry. i.e. If one tries to convert another to his/her religion, s/he assumes that the other person's beliefs are not as valid as his/her own. We feel that all paths are equally valid as long as they do not infringe upon the basic civil rights or free will of another. According to our beliefs, it is up to the individual to choose his or her own path. We do not try to manipulate others into our way of thinking, we only try to educate others about our religion so that they may better understand us. We do, however try to help guide those who have already expressed an interest in the pagan belief systems or religions.
So what do Witches/Wiccans/pagans DO?
Pretty much what everybody does. We come from all walks of life. We raise families, go to work, throw steaks (or vegetables) on the "barbie" and hang out with our friends. We practice our religions and belief systems, celebrate our holidays with festivals and continue to study and explore our past while contemplating our futures.
Many covens and groups meet once a month to worship together under the moon. Pagans tend to hold ceremonies or "circles" out of doors as we feel that being with nature brings us closer to the divinity who creates it.
Some pagan beliefs may seem strange to those who have not heard much about them before. Pagans, on the other hand, are usually very well versed in the beliefs of other religions. They find the various religious systems interesting and often encourage their own children to learn about these other religions. Pagans believe in free will and free choice and that an educated choice is always better than blind obedience to any religion or dogma. We are not "against" other religions. We have simply made our choice to be pagan and we expect others to respect that choice as we respect theirs.
All that we ask is that we are allowed to practice our religion without prejudice or interference as is our right guaranteed here in the United States under the Constitution and as outlined within the constitutions of many other countries. The freedom to practice religion -or no religion-as you choose-whether it be Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist or Pagan-is the freedom to follow your spirit and your heart. This precious freedom must be defended, protected and treasured by all or it will no longer be guaranteed for anyone.
