Its the getting time for various fall and wintery holidays. And everyone has their favorite part of a beloved holiday. Whether its Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, or the Chinese New Year. Tell us what your favorite holiday plant is (a pine tree, a pointsettia, mistletoe wink ) or perhaps the tastiest dish made from a plant (pies, oranges/tangerines for wealth and good fortune), even possibly the best food product ever...CHOCOLATE! And don't forget to tell why this plant or plant product makes your celebration the best!

And have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, St. Lucia Day, Chanukah, St. Nikolaus Day, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year, and anything I have left out!

Hmm...I've always loved Christmas trees. The smell of them. We normally get one the beginning of December and keep it until the end of January. Christmas is nothing without the tree!

Too bad I don't have a white christmas where I live. But yeah pine trees are the best when you want that fresh pine scent in your house. Not only that, but the tender moments of decorating the tree with your family. Now isn't that sweet? heart 3nodding heart

Poinsettias are amazing! I'm trying to get one to bloom as we speak. 14 hours of darkness! I hope it works!

i'm partial to cacti and succulents, so the Christmas cactus is my favorite holiday plant. my two at home are starting to bloom...the silly things tend to start blooming around Thanksgiving a lot. xd

poinsettias and mistletoe are also up there. though i like mistletoe for a different reason than most people ninja (hint: screen name).

Poinsettias win, hands down, in my book. My father has one in his office that I believe to be two years old and huge. Might've died and I've forgotten though. =/ Anyway, poinsettias are just...great. So waxy and nice. And the story behind them is really something, but don't ask me to tell it. I can't remember.
I don't like mistletoe much though...it just looks strange to me. Not that special. Christmas trees are nice if you ever get the chance to buy a real one, but messy when dried up.

The Legend of Poinsettia: A charming story is told of Pepita, a poor Mexican girl who had no gift to present the Christ Child at Christmas Eve Services. As Pepita walked slowly to the chapel with her cousin Pedro, her heart was filled with sadness rather than joy.
"I am sure, Pepita, that even the most humble gift, if given in love, will be acceptable in His eyes," said Pedro consolingly.

Not knowing what else to do, Pepita knelt by the roadside and gathered a handful of common weeds, fashioning them into a small bouquet. Looking at the scraggly bunch of weeds, she felt more saddened and embarrassed than ever by the humbleness of her offering. She fought back a tear as she entered the small village chapel. As she approached the alter, she remembered Pedro's kind words: "Even the most humble gift, if given in love, will be acceptable in His eyes." She felt her spirit lift as she knelt to lay the bouquet at the foot of the nativity scene.
Suddenly, the bouquet of weeds burst into blooms of brilliant red, and all who saw them were certain that they had witnessed a Christmas miracle right before their eyes.

From that day on, the bright red flowers were known as the Flores de Noche Buena, or Flowers of the Holy Night, for they bloomed each year during the Christmas season.
Today, the common name for this plant is the poinsettia!

My Favorite Tree for chrestmas Would be The blue spruce, Thay have a unique color and tekture Thay are fairly easy to grow and tha can reach six to eight feet in as little as three years. My Favorite Plant would Definitly Be the Poinsettias, We Grew 450 Of them in our green house Last year And donated them to local nurising homes, schools, ect.. Thay grow from cuttings, They are normaly a night blooming plant the trick is to change there cycleSo they will grow in daylight They require 14 hours of darckness during the day and they have to be placed under a light at night Thats why thay can be soo expensive to buy in certan Areas They can be Expensive to grow But you take into account you can get quite a fue cuttings from one plant and grow them into adults so it is also a profitable plant.

Christmas cacti are my favorites too. The flowers are just so unique, elegant, and plain out beautiful. Your comment about the blooming prompted me to go look up this thread (you gotta sign up to view it, but membership is free, and it's a GREAT site). Most members of Schlumbergera naturally begin to bloom sometime around November, and continue through January or February. The terms "Thanksgiving" and "Christmas" cactus are actually a bit misleading, as they are all part of the same lineage (descendants of x buckleyi).

Sorry, now that I've nerded all over your thread, you may return to your regularly scheduled discussion.

"Nerded all over the thread?" You'll have to try harder than that to get some of us "nerded over!" Use scientific names all you like! Urbeth and myself will be glad to bicker taxonomy! blaugh

Brassica? That's a new one for me; I had to look it up.

I think I've seen those growing wild around here (I live in Virginia), though I could be confusing them with something else...

I'm glad nerdiness is accepted, or else I'd probably get thrown out. 'Course, most of my plant knowledge is self-taught, so y'all could probably out-do me in nerd knowledge.

And just to keep this post on topic, does anyone know what chemical it is in poinsettias that make them so lethal? I love them, but I can't grow them or else my cat would chew on them.
