Yup, the Nintendo DS is going online. Most of you have heard of it. Won't it be fun? There is even a commercial for online playing in movie theaters! You can see it here.
Anyway, I thought that I'd be the one to make a thread detailing everything about the DS going online.
Q: When will Nintendo's online be out?
A: Nintendo DS online will be out approximately Q4 (Oct.-Dec.) this year. It is supposed to be released alongside the first online game, which is believed to be Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. Upcoming online games are...
Tony Hawk's American Wasteland - 10/18/05
Mario Kart DS - 11/7/05
Animal Crossing DS - 11/21/05
Q: I want to be ready for online, what do I need?
A: You will need...
1. A Nintendo DS
2. A Broadband, DSL, or Cable internet connection. Dial-up is not a good choice, as it will be subject to laggy gameplay.
3. Any of the games listed above.
4. a Wi-Fi Router. ONLY BUY an 802.11b or 802.11g router! Any other type of router is NOT compatible with the DS!
A Wi-Fi router generally has a range of 20-40 feet, allowing you to comfortably play anywhere near you computer.
Q: How much will this cost me?
A: First-Party games will be $30-$35 USD, while 3rd-Party can go even beyond that.
Wi-Fi routers are normally $20-$40 for a good one.
Q: Are there any monthly fees?
A: No! All first-party games will not be subject to monthly fees. Which means that after you buy the game, playing online will be free!
However, there are rumors that third-party games can and may have fees for their online. Be sure to check with third-party games.
Q: How does the wireless router go online?
A: Your DS will send out a signal to recieve a Wi-Fi connection, and your router will send out a signal with a Wi-Fi connection. This enables your game to find the specific server(s) that it can use, and you can connect with other players on those servers.
Q: What about hot spots? Can't I use those?
A: Yes, hot spots can be used. These are generally just wi-fi connections set up in places such as Starbuck or Cyber Cafes. However they generally cost a fee to use, so be careful. There's a chance that they won't recognize your DS as an online-capable tool, but it's best to play it safe.
Q; How many DS consoles can be hooked up on a router at the same time?
A: It depends on your router, but the general number is 4.
Q: So if you have Dial-Up, you can't go online?
A: No, with dial-up you can still go online. However, it is not suggested due to laggy gameplay.
