I've been a horrible member. Inactivity is horrible, no? I don't know how active the guild is, but I recently decided to continue reading the series and a question popped to mind while reading Tale of the Body Thief: How exactly does a vampire's body work?
They don't perspire sweat, secrete wastes, or have the necessary chemicals and fluids to feel sexual in the carnal sense. Their skin toughens and becomes less porous, their nails, hair and eyes become more vibrant -- how is this so? Do they retain the chemicals in the brain that create and moderate emotions? They must. How does their nervous system change and allow them to become so agile?
I suppose I see into this too scientifically, which defeats the purpose of reading about romantic vampires. It's not meant to be looked in such a way, is it? But it fascinates me. A vampire has more synapses in his brain, I believe, and the electrical messages fire more rapidly -- but, ah, how does this happen?
If any of this is explained in later books, or has already been discussed, do enlighten me!This site is rather odd and amusing. I doubt Lestat would enjoy being bald ;]

I personally like this thread. It reminds me a lot of CameoAmalthea. This is the type of thread she loves.

If any of this is explained in later books, or has already been discussed, do enlighten me!This site is rather odd and amusing. I doubt Lestat would enjoy being bald ;] Some of it has been explained in bit and pieces. i think that it's mostly because of the fact that they're body is fueled on nothing but blood. I know that it started because if a powerful spirit infused itself with Ankil who then was urged to change akasha and so forth. but i don't think that it's intended to be a scientific thing, it's more supernatural. It says mostly that the instinct of that spirit was to take blood (for that spirit had the craving to be flesh and blood like many do in the book) , and while infusing it to a person made them that way too. kind of like genetics. but i've looked into actual scientific things and mostly it's just mental stuff, the clinical vampirism or just morbid mutations. if i think of anything else i'll post again soon.

I've always thought that the idea of psychic vamparism was far more interesting and plausable than actual physical vamparism. The science is just too against the body functioning in such a way. I'm sure that someone somewhere has probably found a way to explain out a way for it to be plausable but if so, I haven't seen it (but would really like to. If any of you find a really good scientific based explanation then by all means post it here).
Now Psychic vamparism is something that I think is more easily explainable. You could look at if from a supernatural view, a religious view (that religion being one of age), a scientific view (like energy transfer, magnetics, so on)...and all of those have theories on it. It is certainly interesting stuff and I would suggest checking into it (i stole your pants) if you find the anatomy of a vampire interesting in even the least.

During the Plague, it was believed that Vampires were corpses that drank blood and were able to keep their minds unlike zombies. Thus, whenever a vampire drank, he was revitalizing his decaying form and would be able to do everything a normal human could except for going out in sunlight. Any chemicals their bodies needed was collected threw the blood of their victims. Of course, this idea faded over time
