OK, Having grown up in the sixies/seventies, I am well aware of the age of marijuana and cocaine. I am not saying that the boys were ever into that, but do you think the lyrics to this song are a reflection of that time?
I mean, Bangkok, Thailand, Nepal, all of these countries/cities are known as drug infested areas and to write a song about a train that is going to visit them all and "only stop for the best", says to me that the guy wrote a song about doing drugs.
Does anyone else agree we me on that?

Menolly, maybe this will help. I am posting the lyrics to the song.
Words by neil peart, music by geddy lee and alex lifeson
Our first stop is in bogota To check the columbian fields The natives smile and pass along A sample of their yield Sweet jamaican pipe dreams Golden acapulco nights Then morocco, and the east, Fly by morning light
We're on the train to bangkok Aboard the thailand express We'll hit the stops along the way We only stop for the best
Wreathed in smoke in lebanon We burn the midnight oil The fragrance of afghanistan Rewards a long days toil Pulling into katmandu Smoke rings fill the air Perfumed by a nepal night The express gets you there
We're on the train to bangkok Aboard the thailand express We'll hit the stops along the way We only stop for the best

Uh, While not to betray any illegal activities I may or may not have knowledge of, yes, I'd say passage to bangkok is an effigy to drug use. Not going to say whether or not i beleive our favorite trio partook or not, but the lyrics to me suggest that kind of lifestyle.

I'm not afraid to say, yeah, I'm sure they had some fun in their hay day, just like most other bands did in those days. But now, I'm pretty sure they're pretty fresh and clean ^.^

Yea sounds a lot like drugs and stuff to me, but then again there could be hidden meanings.

Wow, I'm glad I posted the lyrics. Noone was talking about this before I did. I have to agree that the boys, if in deed they once partook, are now clean and sober.

I'm pretty sure it's more about the drug trade than the actual use of drugs...I mean, Peart isn't really known for pointless songs about drugs, is he?
Coincidentally, I heard that you can play this song with that scene in Willy Wonka where there's a garden of candy. Anyone else heard that?

You are right about Neil's songwriting and no, I had never heard that. Interesting.

I like peart, I really do, but I have to agree with Seth on this. Remember, he's young and it's bloody 75-76. Idealism with youth, wisedom with age, and fun all the way. I think that says it for 2112 personally.

Me too, Lethkar, me too...
Who knows, maybe it does have a deeper meaning. Maybe he was pressured into writing it from the band. Maybe someone else wrote it and convinced him to put it under his name. Hmm...

When they played this song at the concert they had a video of people just toking away. I thought it was pretty fun to watch. biggrin
