.:.chapter.1.:.

On a sunny day in a meadow rich with tall, green grasses, what would one expect to find? Certainly not what you would find in the particular meadow that we are about to be introduced to. No, it would be utter nonsense to expect to see an angry girl about to partake on a very odd adventure. Utter nonsense indeed.

But then again...who doesn't like a little nonsense now and then?

And so, let us see into the past. Here, in this particular meadow, there was a girl with light blonde hair walking away from a schoolhouse in an angry and hurried way. This child was Corlissa, who had just been sent out of the classroom by her teacher.

'Why couldn't she take my correction humbly, just as we are taught to?' Corlissa thought angrily to herself.

You see, not five minutes earlier, Corlissa had noticed her teacher mistakingly writing the wrong answer to a question on the blackboard. Not wanting her to give the wrong information to those less informed, Corlissa politely raised her hand, as all little girls and boys should do in class, and waited to be called upon.

Curious, her teacher asked Corlissa what she needed. Corlissa proceeded to tell her teacher the correct answer to the question. Embarrassed, her teacher called this 'talking back' and told Corlissa that she must stay outside for the rest of the lesson.

We now return to little Corlissa who was still quickly walking away from her school. She was about to have something cross her path, and trust me, it's not a black cat.

"Oh my!" Corlissa cried out in astonishment, backing up a step or two as a boy with a rabbit's tail and ears walked in front of her, muttering seriously to himself.

"Why am I always early or late, but never precisely on time? Have I upset Time, just as he did? Oh dear, oh dear..." the boy muttered to himself.

Corlissa decided that she felt bad for him. How dreadful to never be on time! If you were early, you'd be wasting time, but if you were late, you'd be wasting someone else's time! Either way, it wouldn't be very nice.

Confident that it would be the right thing to do, Corlissa decided that this rabbit-boy needed her help. "Pardon me, sir, but would you like to have my watch? Perhaps this could help your dilemma?" she offered, holding out a silver-coloured pocket watch.

You don't think that this story would end so easily, now do you?

This particular rabbit-boy was very deep in thought and therefore very oblivious to the offering made by Corlissa. He merely kept walking on, looking as if he had a particular destination in mind.

Still upset from her earlier confrontation with her teacher, Corlissa began to think that she might as well forget helping this boy out. If he was only going to ignore her, why be kind to him at all?

Just as she was planning on walking away from the situation that was really of no concern to her at all, Corlissa's good side decided to make an appearance and remind her that a good deed is sometimes hard to complete but is very much worth it in the end. Her curious side popped up too and enticed her with a single thought...

'Why does a boy have a rabbit's ears and tail?'

With these things in mind, Corlissa began to follow the boy with the odd white ears and fluffy tail.

.:.chapter.2.:.

Through trees and grasses and other such flora, Corlissa ran after the boy. Her current mission of catching up to him was quite troublesome, for no matter how fast she ran, the rabbit always seemed to be many steps ahead of her. The part that troubled her was that he was only walking!

Surely, she wasn't THAT slow. She always was able to outrun her classmates! 'There must be something special about that rabbit-boy. Perhaps his shoes have been made to carry him faster than a human? Faster than a normal rabbit too, for that matter,' Corlissa pondered.

As she was thinking those thoughts, the one she was following ducked beneath a few low-hanging tree branches and seemed to fall, disappearing quite suddenly. Corlissa let out a gasp of surprise at such a sight.

The young girl went over to inspect the area into which the rabbit had seemed to fall down into. "Now what is this? I've never seen anything like it!" Corlissa exclaimed.

What she found would astound anyone, one would think, unless they were far too familiar with seeing supernatural things. To those people, this would seem very normal indeed. They would probably just give off a bored air and mention that they've seen dozens of vortexes just like these.

Yes, that is what our little Corlissa found, a vortex. It was beautiful in its own swirling way, coloured with various shades of dark red. It seemed wide enough for a person to jump through without snagging any parts of themselves on the rest of the world.

"Is this the type of rabbit hole that rabbit-boys live in? Should I try to go through it? It doesn't seem like very sound logic to, but...I'd like to see where it goes to," Corlissa discussed with herself.

With her curiosity placing its hands on her back and pushing her forward, Corlissa stepped into the mystery that was the vortex.

She was falling! It seemed like that which surrounded her at every side was a darkness that could swallow up the world, turning everything to black. Corlissa screamed in terror, frightened at the thought of falling for eternity into the unknown, of never seeing the day again.

Lights! Lamps, ornate wall lights, candles! All around the terrified girl the brilliance of dozens and dozens of lights came about! With the newly recovered ability to see, Corlissa surveyed everything that surrounded her, seeing small end tables with lamps, bookcases filled with books and trinkers, small chairs with cute cushions... 'It's like falling through so many houses, seeing these things!' Corlissa thought to herself.

As she started falling a bit more slowly and spotted a certain boy, Corlissa imagined herself to be a large bird, preparing to capture her prey. The rabbit was fleeing from her (unbeknownst to him), running up to another person (Corlissa imagined that this one was a wolf with a piercing stare, though a friendly one if he was helping a rabbit) and jumping into another rabbit hole.

'Well, I'll just have to be a good predator and follow him, won't I?' the pretend bird thought to herself. As she landed surprisingly lightly on the tiled floor of a most strange room, Corlissa began making her way towards the new man and the vortex he stood beside.

"Pardon me, good sir, but may I pass? You see, I do so need to follow that rabbit-boy," Corlissa explained to the stranger, practicing her manners.

The man, who was so very much taller than Corlissa, looked down upon her with eyes that reminded the blonde child of the portal she had gone through before and the portal that stood in front of her now. They were the same dark, swirling red! He made the girl feel as if she was being looked over for any and all flaws. Corlissa made sure that she was standing up straight and not fidgeting.

"Not without good reason, child," the man (Corlissa started referring to him as the Door Keeper in her mind) stated. In the way that he said it, his statement seemed very final.

Corlissa thought quickly on how to best inform this Door Keeper of her reasons. After a moment's thought and more of that penetrating gaze, she began to tell the man of her need to go through the vortex. She thought that simply stating things would be far better than a length explanation. Who knew how far ahead that boy would be if she told of every little detail! That would take such a very long time indeed.

"I'm attempting to catch up to the rabbit-boy who just passed through here. I've heard of his troubles with time and would like to give him my watch so as to help him," Corlissa said. She hoped that this would be an adequate answer for the Door Keeper.

"And what makes you think yourself to be so important as to have easy passage on your quest?" the Door Keeper asked.

Taken aback by this question, Corlissa thought for another moment before responding. "I don't think myself to be overly important at all. I merely thought that this would be the most efficient way to meet up with the boy again. That, and I don't know how else I would find him again, as there don't seem to be any other doors," Corlissa pondered out loud.

"There are doors everywhere. You just need to know how to unlock them. Unfortunately for you, I am the only one who is able to do as such in this place," the man responded. He seemed to take some kind of pleasure at this knowledge. It was most likely pride, as this one is a very proud person.

"Well, would you mind unlocking one for me, if the door in front of me is not for me to use?" Corlissa requested, growing a little irritated with this man. Was it really that big of a thing for her to use this portal?

The Door Keeper smiled (though it seemed a very bitter smile indeed) and waved his hand in a small circle, as if he were moving sands around on a table. With this simple movement, Corlissa found herself falling into another vortex and screamed. Her screams were mixed with the quickly fading laughter of the Door Keeper (but indeed, it was a humourless laugh from such a character).

.:.chapter.3.:.

Falling was quickly becoming one of Corlissa's most hated experiences, ranking alongside such time-honoured favourites as eating brussel sprouts and putting away her toys. The young girl screamed as she continued falling and when she finally stopped that horrid pastime, she began screaming anew due to where she fell.

Corlissa sputtered and flailed a bit as she was introduced to the shocking evidence that she had indeed fallen into a large and deep body of water. Trying to listen to the smarter parts of her brain, the girl calmed down a little and kicked her legs to keep her head above water. This, however, did nothing to protect her from a small wave that decided to douse her.

'Why oh why is this happening to me? I'm only trying to do a good thing! Does the world dislike kindness that much? I promise, I shall never water a plant again!' Corlissa thought desperately to herself, feeling quite miserable.

She floated along like this for quite some time, a sense of desperation gripping her tightly. Hope made itself known again, though, in the form of a small boat, just barely within Corlissa's sight. Relief flooded through the young body, joy making her feel energized and fully able to start swimming towards the boat.

"Hello! Hello over there! Person in the boat! Would you help me please?" the drenched girl cried out, attempting to wave her arm to grab the boat master's attention while swimming at the same time.

The boat master, a young man with auburn hair and strange amber eyes that seemed to twinkle, rowed his boat up to Corlissa, a brilliant smile upon his face. "Well, hello there! Why is a young lady such as yourself taking a swim here? It seems like such an odd place for such a thing," he commented, looking around in wonder as he spoke.

"Do believe me, sir, when I say that it wasn't my idea. I wouldn't want to be in this situation ever again. I don't even want to be in it right now! May I board your boat, please?" Corlissa begged, desiring nothing more than to be dry. (Although rest assured that causing physical harm to the Door Keeper was also a nice thought.)

The boat master looked taken aback. "Heavens, no! Why, if you did that at this moment, you'd bring the entire Ocean with you! It has grown quite fond of you, after all. No, no, I simply cannot allow you to board. I will, however, offer the edge of my boat to your hand. I'm headed towards a firmer setting; you can ride alongside me until we reach it," the man said. He seemed to think that this was a good compromise.

'Well, it's better than swimming aimlessly, now isn't it?' Corlissa spoke bitterly to herself. She nodded at the strange man, accepting his offer.

"Well, well, well, look at that! I see my destination! You seem to have brought me good luck, my dear!" the fellow laughed joyously, rowing with renewed vigour.

'Wow! Perhaps my luck is changing for the better! Or perhaps this man is my lucky charm instead,' our heroine thought to herself.

The two brought themselves onto the land, but not before the man, who introduced himself as Cyprian, made Corlissa thank the Ocean for hosting her. Only after showing her gratitude and giving a proper curtsy was Corlissa allowed to walk with Cyprian to higher grounds, watching curiously as the man waved farewell in an enthusiastic manner to the Ocean.

.:.chapter.4.:.

What does one do to dry off when one is soaked practically to the bone? Well, I'm fairly certain that one would not do what Cyprian and Corlissa did. (Corlissa would like to repeat that this was in no way her idea, as you will soon see for yourself.)

Cyprian shook his head a bit, sending droplets of water flying about. Only with this action did he seem to fully realize just how wet he and Corlissa were. He stared at his companion for a moment, seeing her miserable face as she tried her best to wring out her hair and dress. "Oh my! We do seem to be rather soaked, my dear! Come, let us have a Caucas race to dry off!" he said rather cheerfully.

A rather water-logged mouse came up behind them, shivering. [He too had just come out of the Ocean's expanse.] He shook his head at Cyprian's suggestion, finding it to be repulsive. "No, no, no! You certainly don't need to do that! All you need are some dry words. Those will help our drenched state," the mouse declared, nodding to himself.

He, however, was soon silenced, and rather forcibly, by Cyprian's foot as it kicked him all the way back into the Ocean's embrace.

Corlissa was shocked, to say the least, at this course of action but was soon distracted from the flailing mouse by the dozens of other sodden creatures that began to crawl out from the Ocean. She had never before seen so many animals dressed in such formal wear!

"Hello, my friends! Please, do join us in a Caucas race to dry yourselves! We're just about to start!" Cyprian offered rather graciously. He smiled brightly and walked over to a dead tree.

Feeling rather unsure of this 'race', Corlissa felt that it was time for her to inquire as to what it actually was. This was not received well at all.

"What do you mean you don't know what a Caucas race is?!" Cyprian shouted, horrified at this revelation of Corlissa's lack of knowledge on the event. The other animals began to speak amongst themselves, each sharing the same amazement and astonishment at anyone not knowing what a Caucas race was. Even the mouse (who had pulled himself from the Ocean) joined in on these conversations. (For while he did not not approve of the idea of a Caucas race, he still knew quite thoroughly what one was. After all, why would he have any reason to dislike it if he hadn't experienced one for himself?)

Still appearing rather upset, Cyprian took a deep breath, attempting to calm his turmoil. "Quiet, everyone! She shall learn of the Caucas race today by experiencing a most glorious one! Be sure to put forth your best efforts!" he encouraged in a loud voice, reaching the ears of all the creatures. They turned to him, each admiring his actions of leadership.

Corlissa watched, extremely curious, as Cyprian turned to the dead tree and waved his hand, lighting it with fire that spewed forth from his fingertips. The blonde girl seemed to be the only one amazed by this action, although no one could turn away from it. The tree was soon completely engulfed in flames. Corlissa supposed that she should at least be grateful that the tree was surrounded by rocks that kept the fire in and that the entire display was on the sand, which didn't seem particularly eager to carry the flames about.

"Let the Caucas race...begin!" Cyprian announced. As soon as he said this, all of the creatures (except for our Corlissa, of course) began to run in a circle around the tree, seeming to chase each other endlessly. Shrugging to herself, Corlissa pushed her way into this race, feeling worldly from the idea of experiencing such an odd event.

The minutes passed by and took with them the water, leaving everyone rather dry rather quickly. Corlissa soon tired of the never-ending race. Who wanted to run for such a very long time around such a very hot fire? She forced her way out of the circle of runners, staring in wonder as they continued to run with seemingly endless energy.

Her attention was called away, though, as she saw that one of the animals that had participated in the race was the rabbit-boy! He, too, had grown weary of the race and had begun making his way along a path that lead to a rather large forest.

With her prey in sight once again, Corlissa ran after the boy, leaving Cyprian, the animals, and the blaze far behind her.

.:.chapter.5.:.

As the child ran after the rabbit, she yelled out for him, hoping to catch his attention. Alas, her efforts were all for naught as she was once again unheard.

Corlissa sighed to herself, sitting down on a fallen tree as she fought to catch her breath. She was quite tired after the combination of the Caucas race and running after the boy. Trying to gain his attention with her calls was quite exhausting as well.

"Why is it that whenever I yell out to him, he never seems to hear me?" Corlissa pondered out loud, resting her chin in her hand which was likewise rested on her knee.

Feeling rather despondent, Corlissa wondered once again if all of her efforts were really worth helping the boy out. All that seemed to be coming about from her quest was more and more trouble! Was it really that important to her to help someone out?

The girl sighed again, knowing the answer to this. 'Of course it's that important! I can't let myself become discouraged. My efforts will prove effective if it's the last thing I do!'

Secure in herself once again, Corlissa stood up and began following the forest path once again. She wasn't able to get very far, though, as two blonde boys suddenly rushed from behind trees to stand in front of her! They were quite polite, greetings her with much warmth. Corlissa returned these sentiments as courteously as she could. Before she could wish them a good day and continue on her way, the twins insisted on telling her a story.

"But I really must be going! I am terribly busy right now!" Corlissa insisted, looking longingly at the path in front of her. She was, as she was unhappily becoming used to, ignored by the children as they begun their tale. (This tale is called the Jabberwocky, as some may already know. Corlissa was not one of these people.)

The first twin began, dancing around lightly:
"'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe."

The second twin, also stepping about lightly and gracefully, continued:
"'Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!'"

Acting out the scene of which he spoke, the first carried on the poem:
"He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought."

The second took on the part of the Jabberwocky as he spoke dramatically:
"And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!"

Continuing to be the hero of the story, the first played the story out with his brother:
"One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back."

The second took on the part of the father with apparent ease:
"'And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy."

The two danced around each other while speaking the last part as one voice:
"'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe."

As the twins bowed lowly, Corlissa clapped politely at their performance. She wondered briefly if what she was doing would be considered lying, as although she enjoyed their acting, she didn't understand the entire poem due to all of the words of utter nonsense that were interlaced with it!

"Thank you kindly for your act! I quite enjoyed it," Corlissa said, smiling. (At this point her conscience was almost drowning out all other thoughts.)

"Really? Oh, you're so sweet!" the first twin exclaimed, clapping to himself and grinning brightly. The second twin was more subdued in his joy, smiling quietly to himself.

Corlissa decided that these were two very nice, if not incredibly insistent, boys and that she was quite happy to have met them. They might have slowed down her hunt but they did lift her spirits.

She once again mentioned that she needed to be on her way but was once again not heard. Corlissa sighed as the twins began to start another story without paying attention to her. (This story, for those who are curious, was The Walrus and the Carpenter.) Letting the two become enraptured with their tale, Corlissa quietly walked away and began to walk down the path once again.

.:.chapter.6.:.

Corlissa sighed with relief, happy to get away from the adorable, yet extremely pushy twins. 'I do hope that I haven't fallen too far behind my prey!'

Indeed she hadn't, as the boy had finally reached his own goal and therefore was unknowingly giving Corlissa time to catch up to him. Not too much time though. We really can't make anything easy for dear Corlissa.

In a few minutes' time, our heroine had reached the rabbit's current location (though, of course, she didn't know this). It was a charming little cottage that was surrounded by a white picket fence with a small gate. Corlissa was about to open the gate when she saw a name on the mailbox that was next to it.

"I wonder who Akimitsu is..." Corlissa wondered out loud as she read the name. She shrugged the question off, deciding that she'd probably find out soon enough. She continued on, opening the gate and stepping up to the door of the cottage.

Just as she was preparing to use the door's curious, rabbit-shaped knocker, the door swung open! Corlissa cried out in surprise, almost falling down as she was pushed aside by none other than the very one that she had been chasing for this entire tale.

"Oh no, oh no! She'll have my head for sure!" the rabbit-boy, Akimitsu, said to himself, worried as he rushed past Corlissa. He was hurrying to pull his gloves on, acting clumsy due to his rush.

The golden-eyed girl stared at him for a moment, her thoughts trying to sort themselves out from the mad pile that they had been thrown into by the rabbit's haste. "W-wait, Mister Akimitsu! I have something for you!" Corlissa yelled, determined to make the boy listen to her. She had already gone through so much for his sake!

"Time will not allow me to wait! I have places to be!" Akimitsu screeched, almost breaking the cottage's gate in his haste to get through it.

Corlissa stared at him again, silently. The one time that he had actually paid attention to her he had merely brushed her off. This situation was quite tiresome. I'm sure that you'd feel the same way.

Sighing, the blonde child entered the house, ignoring the well-mannered side of her that told her in a very uppity voice that it was rude to go into someone's house without their permission. She looked around for a moment before spotting the cottage's small dining area. It was on the dining table that she set her watch down.

Why, really, should she continue to chase Akimitsu? She was tired, hot, and really wished to return to her home now, thank you very much. Surely the boy would have to come home eventually and would be delighted to find the watch.

As Corlissa began to leave the house, her curiosity made itself known once again. 'I wonder what types of things a rabbit-boy owns? I would surely like to know...'

While her logical side curled up in a corner and began to sob into its handkerchief quietly, Corlissa happily began to make her way through the house. She picked up odd objects (most of which were decorated with a rabbit or a carrot, which seemed surprisingly logical in this world), wondering what some of them were used for. She happily tried to use certain things in this way and that, pretending that she knew fully well how to use them and had known as such for her entire life.

After the first floor of the house had lost its power to amuse her, Corlissa made her way up the stairs to the second floor. The first door that she opened appeared to be Akimitsu's bedroom.

It was a fairly large room and was richly decorated. Corlissa thought that it might just be one of the loveliest rooms that she had ever seen! As she walked through it, admiring the now-familiar rabbit- and carrot-oriented ornaments, she spotted a hand-fan on an end table.

Oh, how she loved fans! Corlissa had always admired her mother's hand-fans but had been told to never touch them. Then again, Mother had never said anything about touching the fan of a rabbit-boy, now did she?

Feeling secure in this loop-hole, Corlissa picked up the fan and began to use it, delighting in the slight breeze that blew across her smiling face. After fanning herself quite a few times, she finally put the fan back onto the end table, scrunching her face up a little as her face began to get the inevitable feeling of heat rushing towards it again. Honestly, must she fan herself forever to be cooled off?

It was too bad that Corlissa had not decided to leave the fan be and that their surely must be a reason why little girls should not touch elaborate fans. She didn't notice (at first, anyway) as she began to shrink at an increasingly faster pace. She finally became aware of the situation at hand as she noticed the end table becoming taller than she.

"Now what is this? Is the house growing?" she exclaimed, looking upwards as everything began to tower over her.

It soon became apparent to her that it was not the house that was growing but rather she that was changing. She did so wish that it had been the other way around, though. She was not in the mood to change sizes!

This place was not in the mood to please her, it seemed, as she continued to shrink until she feared that she was no larger than a teacup! How was she to get home now? How would she even get out of this house?

Ah well. I hope you weren't hoping for much time to think on that, Corlissa.
