Hello and welcome to the Musicians sub-forum of the newly constructed Rush guild. This thread is dedicated to all the aspiring musicians out there.

What I want to know is, what instrument do YOU play and why? What made you want to learn music? How long have you been studying? What are the names of some of your role models?

That's just the beginning; I'd love to know more about each and every one of you, so feel free to discuss what is your favorite type of music to play and if you're in a band.

Just remember to respect your fellow members and to treat others in a polite manner. Other than that, obey the T.o.S and I shall remain happy. whee

Well, the first thing I ever did was trumpeteering. It was fun, but hardly exciting. Then I tried guitar, and I was just... eh, I couldn't stay dedicated. Then, one day, I picked up my first bass (still have it too, cause thats the one I bought ^.^) And have been playing for the past two years now. I'm also trying to get into some guitar, and I can keep a decent beat on drums. By far, bass is the funnest instrument I've ever played. It requires less precision, so you can put more energy into it while not worrying about hiting wrong frets. And, with players like Geddy Lee, and John Myung, people can understand that bass doesn't have to be JUST a backing instrument

I'm with you on the statement that bass isn't just a backing instrument anymore. My father plays the bass so naturally I took a liking towards it. But musicians like Geddy and Sheehan, bass has ultimately become a core component of this type of music.

It's easy to understand why these men are able to play such great fills and complex solos, they are Gods at what they do.

I've noticed that the gap between godly and basic bassists has been getting bigger lately with these new bands, or is that just me? And plus, for me at least, not having a guitarist coming to band practice, and just having drums bass and vox, kinda puts it on me to be a bit more elaborate than normal.

Well, it seems to me that these newer bands tend to focus on either: Shock value, meaning how loud they scream, how gory their lyrics are, or just how downright obnoxious they can be, but they know nothing of music..

Or, they're focused on conforming like every other band, meaning that they aren't trying the best they can do. They're only attempting at music, they're afraid to go above and beyond what all the other groups are doing.

Therefore, the result in musicians is either A) Seemingly shocking musicians that can't play chords to save their lives or B) Poorly conditioned musicians who never give it their all and eventually fail.

Hey, no making competition for our guild. If you must make a guild of your own, base it on something other than RUSH. One fan guild is enough.

Well, I realized something about my band. This might make us stupid, idk, but it got to the point last practice, to where me and Mike (my drummer) ended up saying "Just how confusing can we make this song???".
And the thing is, We'll get the desired respnse from good musicians, because people who really don't know much about music, don't normally grasp the concept of offbeat tempos and odd time signatures.
and I agree with Shanra, no other rush guilds pls?

Right! That's exactly what I'm talking about! Not a lot of people, unless you're either a musician or know enough about music, will understand the sheer beauty of complex rhythms and odd time signatures! It's a beautiful thing, 7/8 is. :3

But in my opinion, the more complex and rhythm-heavy a song is, the more I love it. There's nothing better than listening to a song, predicting what the next verse might sound like, and be thrown off completely by their complexity! I love it! <3

I'm a bassist as well (been playing 3 years, majoring in bass guitar performance in college) but I hardly think it requires any less precision than a guitar. Especially if you do soloing, it takes just as much precision. Idk that's just something I've learned from putting hours into playing scales and stuff like that.

I play bass, trombone, piano, and I sing(I'm a tenor with a huge falsetto range, har har). Aaaaanyway I play bass in a progressive/jazz/rock/jam band and it's great. We're all music majors so when we sit down to write music we know what we are talking about. As the bassist I feel it is my absolute duty to listen to everything going on, I feel every other bassist should be the same way. Bassists are the backbone and structure to any music, bass and drums should also lock together as one (unless you go off into a crazy jam and start soloing hehehe). Anyway yea I've been playing for 3 years and I am majoring in bass guitar/doublebass performance. I love music, it's a passion of mine that I fully realized my junior year in high school. Now the bass guitar occupies about 4-5 hours of my day every day. What's everyone's favorite time signature? <----random musical question of the day. Mine is personally 6/8 I just like the uppity kind of feel of 6/8. pardon my raging ADD.

Good to have another virtuoso here in the guild. (:

I fully agree with your statement on bass players: They are the backbone of a band. Without them, or drums, the song would have no solid foundation to build upon.

That's awesome that you devote so much time to your music. You'll only grow better with practice.

To answer your random question, my favorite time signature is 7/8, it just sounds funky, in my opinion.

I play guitar because my Dad taught me. Man, I really want to learn to play Bass. I love Geddy! He's the reason that I wish I could play Bass. Guitar's fun to play too. I only play acoustic.
