When I was in High School, I actually used the lyrics from Trees in one of my English papers. I tried to explain how the lyrics were being used to explain how people in the world today are predujiced against each other for a variety of reasons. I don't remember what I got on the paper, only that I was able to play the song in class and let everyone hear it. It was pretty cool.

Yeah, The Trees was actually the very first song I ever heard from Rush. I remember my dad trying to explain it to me when I was really young. I must've been six or seven at the time.

Till this day it's one of my favorite songs. The lyrics are just so powerful and aspiring. I'm almost certain it was one of the reason I became such and extrovert, I MUST talk to everyone and treat them like I treat all my friends, 3nodding

...And the trees are all kept equal, by hatchet, axe and saw. .. .

Thought I would post the lyrics here.

There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.

The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.

There is trouble in the forest,
And the creatures all have fled,
As the maples scream "Oppression!"
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.

My dad told me about those lyrics … his interpretation is that the oaks are the privileged people in society, and the maples are the less-privileged who envy them. The maples want to be treated equally, even though the oaks are maybe smarter or better suited as leaders than they are, and so everyone gets dumbed down to the maples' level with "hatchet, axe, and saw." But that's just my dad's idea. 3nodding

Probably my favorite set of lyrics from Neil Peart, which is saying something.

When I first heard this song, I listened to it over and over for weeks. Just like when I first heard 2112 (The first Rush I ever heard).

In order to interpret it, you have to keep in mind that Peart tends to lean toward objectivism in his lyrics (Anthem, for instance).

Also in 2112, the individuals right to the persuit of happiness in himself and the oppression of it. Kind of makes it a little strange that passage of bangkok was on that album as well, lol...

It was a really great song. I think that it does mean equality and it kind of reminds me of the civil rights movement. It just changed my life when I first heard this song.

Neil Peart says that "The Trees" is based off of a cartoon he saw of trees talking as if they were people. I guess he decided to take that idea and send a message through it.
