Jeezus crispy christ on crutches, is everybody on this website an absurdly talented artist of some kind? How the hell do these people not have jobs being in graphic design or something akin to that? It's like they've been given the gift of autonomous flight but choose not to use it for reasons unknown. Not that I'm judging but DAMN. If I had half the talent that this community's populace seems to possess, I'd be pimping that s**t out like a lift salesman at a midget convention. Unnerving as hell.

GAH!

*rams head into wall... finds a stud, hits it

Uh huh. Should have seen that one coming.

It's hard to get a job with art.

They like to pass up people with talent for people with bachelors degrees and crayon sketches, so I'm not surprised a lot of good artist on here are bumming art for fake money.
I've seen some insanely talented people doodling avatar head shots in the minishop forum. It's kinda sad, but at least it's a hobby, I guess?

My rant on the subject pertains to bachelor degrees automatically being a pass/fail for even artists. Crap IMO...

I only do model kits, really so I can't comment much. (I'm told my art is decent if I ever sit and actually draw. This never happens.)

As for how I achieved my gundam model building prowess, I actually had to devour the heart of a Japanese man. See, over seas they are all born knowing how to build model kits professionally. For anybody else to do it you must absorb the power of a roughly 35 year old Japanese man. The other way is to cut off his head, but you must wait for the quickening for that to work.

As long as it doesn't stain the shoes, I'll try anything.

And Mar, it's funny that you mention the credentials factor as I was loath to say anything for fear of sounding bitter, but you're so ******** dead-on it hurts. I landed my current job by turning in a resume and... I'd say a fairly capable demo reel in a grab for a broadcast designer job, only to be turned down in favor of a Savannah Arts grad. Production, however, hired me on as they felt that it'd be a waste to let me go, which I am grateful for. What I'm even more grateful for is that the Art Department head now has to deal with someone who is not only lazy and totally immune to common technological sense, but is also a piss-poor designer to boot. But at least he has that piece of paper, right? President Coolidge on line 2, heh.

You'll have to use some plastic wrap to keep your shoes clean. Sorry to hear about the peice of paper thing. Not really related, but you know FedEx won't hire you on as anything above a box-thrower without a Bachelers? I couldn't beleive it when I started working there. World sucks sometimes. Really hard.

Oddly enough, my last job was delivering legal documents (you know, pictures of severe head wounds and behind-the-back dickings? Hot action!) for FedEx Kinko's. I figured I'd try to rank myself up to truck driver as they make some pretty sweet coin and, well, I had pretty much given up on my animation goals by this point anyway. But holy s**t, I still had to lift similar workloads at times and my weight clocks in at a mere 140. If I had made that into a career, I'd be nil but a husk by middle age.

Wow...I didn't know about FedEx wanting Bachelor degrees. My husband works for them in the mornings unloading the trucks and plane. He was thinking about driving a route, but they've never mentioned wanting a degree so far.

I definitely agree with you on all the talented people. I am absolutely untalented and uncrafty. I don't have the patience for it. My sister, on the other hand, is fairly good.

(I know this is off topic, but I have to say this guild is great. I just joined today. Very interesting and entertaining subjects here for the older crowd. Just wanted to say thanx.)

Not saying I'm talented, but I couldn't do art for a living. It would drive me nuts. I love it as a hobby. When I take art classes I get super frustrated because they expect only one thing from me and don't like me straying away from what they, the instructors, prefer. It's not really art if it's narrow minded like that and depends on what your instructor likes ><. Also I don't care to sit there for more than an hour working on one piece.

My mother was relaying a story to me a couple of days ago on the matter of diplomas and the bullshitery surrounding them.
She had a man in an interview once tell her that he'd rather hire a person from TCU with a totally non-related degree than a person like her with a related degree from any other college because TCU was hot-s**t in that town.

Asshat, if you ask me. Not only do you need a degree, but it has to be from just the right college if the hiring manager is a d**k.

I love it. Fields filled with totally unqualified workers all because they have that loving paper.

Your art department head now has a wonderful paperweight shaped like a person on payroll, eh? Got to love it!

Blue Sunrizer:
I believe that your husband has the potential to work up the ladder at FedEX over time w/o a degree, but it is much harder and they won't hire from outside the company w/o one.
I've heard about the degree requirements from a few sources, and it's not fair. They will pick a college grad for supervisor who's never lifted a package in their life before promoting a 4 year dedicated employee from the loading docs w/o one. D:
